Questioning Assumptions, Sprint Variability, and Cutting the Fluff | Cam Josse

Send us Fan Mail Do strength coaches need to think like researchers, or just understand how researchers think? Cam Josse is an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Detroit Lions and a PhD candidate at Jean Monnet University. Before the NFL he coached football at Indiana and Auburn, and he is lead author of a Journal of Sports Sciences paper on sprint acceleration in Division I football players. Topics include: Evidence tiers: Separating empirical, anecdotal, and experimental practice so you know how confident to be Single variable causation: Why “we did more hang cleans and our 40 got faster” rarely holds up Reading research: How to pressure test a paper, including with AI, and why methods matter more than conclusions Cutting the fluff: Why Cam asks what he can remove from a program instead of what he can add In-season training: Simple output work for healthy players, and variability for return to play Sprint acceleration by position: How linemen and skill players solve the same task differently, and why there may be no optimal technique For coaches and practitioners who want to be clearer about what they know and what they are guessing. Behind the Book: Chapter 11 - Want to Lose Weight After 50? Stop Dieting First.

Text us a comment or question! You want to lose twenty pounds. Your coach’s first instruction? Stop trying to lose weight. Wait… what? If you’ve spent years eating less, pushing harder, and losing and regaining the same weight, that advice might sound backward. But another restrictive diet may be skipping the very thing you need: a stronger foundation. In this episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, Kevin English returns to his upcoming book, Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life, with Chapter 11: Phase One—Metabolic Restoration, kicking off Part III: The Blueprint. This chapter explores what it means to rebuild before reducing: nourishing your body, supporting muscle, restoring consistency, and preparing for a more sustainable approach to fat loss. And no, eating enough doesn’t mean backing a dump truck full of nachos into the driveway. In this episode, you’ll discover: · Why preparation deserves a place in your fat-loss plan. · What metabolic restoration means—and how it differs from permission to overeat. · Five goals for this phase: better energy, muscle support, consistency, a healthier relationship with food, and renewed trust. · Why strength training, protein, walking, sleep, and recovery form the foundation. · Signs that you may be ready to transition into a fat-loss phase. · How to recognize meaningful progress when the scale hasn’t budged. · Why ordinary habits deserve more credit than another dramatic Monday restart. Your challenge this week: Choose one measure of progress that has nothing to do with your weight. Track your energy, strength, sleep, or consistency—and give yourself credit for the improvements. Help shape Fully Alive You’re hearing this book while it’s still a work in progress, and your feedback matters. Does rebuilding before reducing make sense? Does eating more after years of dieting feel intimidating? What would you like explained more clearly? Email Kevin your feedback at coach@silveredgefitness.com. Coming next in the book series: Phase Two—Accelerated Fat Loss, where we’ll explore a strategic approach built on the foundation established here. If this episode made you think of someone who’s exhausted from starting over, send it their way. Your next chapter doesn’t have to begin with another diet. It can begin with building a body - and a life—you love. Ready to build a lean, strong, capable body after 50? In this video, we’re going to talk about early time-restricted eating. In my first book, I recommended that everyone should eat breakfast. In my second book, I removed that recommendation. After reviewing the research, I tried early time-restricted eating and I’m very impressed with the benefits. Early eating aligns with your circadian rhythm, so it can be beneficial to avoid eating after 3:00p.m. Here are 7 benefits of early time-restricted eating: 1. Better HOMA-IR (insulin sensitivity) 2. Better blood sugars 3. Better B-cell response 4. Lower appetite in the evening 5. Better insulin levels after eating 6. Autophagy 7. Food genes downgraded in the evening Biochemical pathways that are associated with eating and food are normally downgraded in the evening. Eating reactivates those food genes, which is why I'm experimenting with my eating pattern. I’m still fasting for 20 hours each day, I've just shifted my eating pattern from 9:00a.m.-1:00p.m! Cortisol spikes in the morning, causing you to become hungry. You don’t have a cortisol spike in the evening, so you’ll spend the rest of the day satisfied and simply not hungry. This leads to better digestion, better blood sugar, and better sleep. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, age 57, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting.
