Timeless Wisdom with Dennis Prager - What's the Biggest Mistake Parents Make? | The Happiness Hour

Could the way parents treat their children today shape the adults they become tomorrow? On this episode of the Happiness Hour, Dennis Prager is joined by psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Marmer to examine the most common mistakes parents make and how early childhood experiences can influence a person's happiness, confidence, and relationships for years to come. Dr. Marmer identifies four major parenting mistakes: humiliating children, failing to listen to them, being inconsistent, and allowing too much mindless activity. He explains how seemingly harmless behaviors, such as mocking a child, dismissing their feelings, or responding unpredictably, can undermine their sense of security and self-worth. Dennis and Dr. Marmer also discuss how these experiences can contribute to patterns of unhappiness or mistreatment that carry into adulthood. But is a difficult childhood a life sentence? The conversation explores how parents can help older children, how adults can begin to overcome painful childhood experiences, and why patient listening, loving relationships, and consistent guidance matter so much. Dennis and Dr. Marmer make the case that one of the most important things a parent can do is treat a child with dignity and never use their greater power or experience to humiliate them. Your Nightly Scripture - Resting in the Truth That Jesus Will Hold Onto Me (Jude 1)

Evening Scripture Jude, Chapter 1 Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, to those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance. Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people. For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling — these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire. In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings. But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct — as irrational animals do — will destroy them. Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion. These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm — shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted — twice dead. They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever. Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage. But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear — hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy — to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. Evening Reflection Jude offers one of the most amazing and comforting promises in all of Scripture. Yet when you read through the chapter, it does not begin there. You first read about ungodly people who have slipped in among t

Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - Finding Hope in the Midst of Darkness

The path through the forest seemed manageable enough, even after the sun had set. Confident in the direction, moving forward alone while the group went ahead. And then the path zagged where it should have zigged, and suddenly there was a tumble down a hill and a landing in a bed of thorn bushes. Scratched up, deep in the forest, unable to see, unsure which way to go. Every direction tried brought more bushes and more scrapes. Panic beginning to set in. And then, through the trees, a light. Not a defined path. Not the house itself. Just the warm glow from the main lodge cutting through the darkness. And that was enough. Enough to orient. Enough to know which way to walk. Life does this to us. It zigs when we want it to zag. A loss arrives without warning. A hardship at work or school turns everything sideways. And suddenly we are in unfamiliar terrain, scraped up, unsure which direction leads out. Jesus says, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. He is not a distant star. He is Emmanuel, God with us. The light does not stay fixed in one place while we stumble toward it through the dark. It comes to us. It stands beside us as we climb our way out. And when we keep it before us, even when we cannot see a clear path, we know which direction to walk. We may still get scrapes along the way. That is honest. The darkness may still appear thick and the thorns may still catch. But the light of Jesus is always present. Always coming toward us. Always with us in a deeper way than we may realize in the hardest moment. If tonight you are scratched up by life’s zigging and zagging, you are not left alone in the dark. The light has come to you. Ponder Tonight Jesus describes Himself as the light of the world, which is not the image of a distant signal to navigate toward but of a presence that comes to us, stands with us, and orients us from within the darkness rather than from outside it. Walking in His light does not mean the thorns disappear or the path becomes immediately clear. It means we have something to orient toward even when we cannot see the full way forward. Jesus also tells His followers in Matthew 5:14 that they are the light of the world, which means part of how His light reaches people in darkness is through the people who carry it into dark places. The light of life is not just illumination for navigating difficulty. It is the enlivening presence of Christ Himself, making us more fully alive in the places where darkness has tried to diminish us. Tonight’s Scripture “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” — John 8:12, NIV Your Evening Prayer Lord Jesus, You show us the compassionate love of the Father, always present, always shining into our lives. In the times and places when we are tempted to focus only on our struggles, help us catch a vision of Your light cutting through the trees. Push aside the darkness that creeps in, and the rejection and discouragement we can so easily feel because of it. Enliven our lives. Brighten our experiences. Shine upon our relationships. Give us peace, security, and resolve. Remind us that in Your mercy we have hope, and in Your Spirit we can sustain all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Want More? Your Daily Bible Verse - You Don't Have to Convince God to Care (Judges 11:29)

Today's Bible Verse: "Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites." — Judges 11:29 Have you ever felt like you needed to prove your worth or convince God to care about your struggles? Judges 11:29 reminds us that God's presence and purpose aren't earned through human approval or personal achievement. Jephthah had experienced rejection and hardship, yet God worked through his life when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. His story reminds us that our past and other people's opinions do not determine whether God can work through us. Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer for Good Purpose in the Place God Has You

Four months out from scoliosis surgery, one month before a son’s wedding, and nowhere near where recovery was supposed to be by now. The vision of dancing the night away in joyful celebration had quietly given way to the reality of significant physical limitation. And the question that settled in underneath the disappointment was a familiar and honest one: what good could possibly come from this? Joseph’s answer to that question, spoken to the brothers who had sold him into slavery and left him for dead, is one of the most stunning declarations of God’s sovereignty in all of Scripture. After years in a pit, in prison, falsely accused, and forgotten — he looked at the people who had meant him harm and said: you intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish the saving of many lives. And then he asked the question that reframes everything: am I in the place of God? He was not asking rhetorically. He was acknowledging something profound — that every place he had been, including the pit and the prison, was precisely where God had him. He was always in the place of God. That perspective did not make the suffering lighter while it was happening. But it produced a peace in the process that would have been impossible without it. That same perspective is available in every disappointing, uncomfortable, and confusing season — not because we can always see the purpose, but because we know the One who holds it. Whether the good is for us now, for us later, or for someone else entirely, it is always good. We are always in the place of God. If you enjoy this episode, check out Keri's latest book, Win Over Worry: Conquer What Shakes You and Soar With the One Who Overcomes. You can find it on Amazon or your favorite online retail site. Bible Verse “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” — Genesis 50:20, NIV Ponder Today We are always in the place of God — in the pit, in the prison, and in the unexpected limitation. Joseph’s declaration was not that his suffering was good, but that God had purposeful placement in every single location his life took him. That same truth extends to every season we find ourselves in. God’s good purpose does not always reveal itself in the moment. Joseph could not have seen from the pit what God was building toward. The good was real, but it was not yet visible. The same is likely true of circumstances that currently feel purposeless or disappointing. Holding onto truth written down and kept in plain sight is a practical act of faith. In a long season of recovery and disappointment, having Joseph’s words visible daily made a tangible difference. What we keep before our eyes shapes what we are able to believe in hard moments. Whether the good is for us now, for us later, or for someone else entirely, it is all for good. Romans 8:28 and Genesis 50:20 together paint a picture of a God whose redemptive purposes extend beyond our individual timeline and touch lives we may never know about. Godly perspective in suffering produces peace in the process. Joseph did not wait until the reunion with his brothers to find peace. The perspective that God had good purposes shaped how he endured every season before the resolution came. A Prayer for You Today Lord God, You are the author of all good things, and everything You are doing in my life is leading toward Your good and perfect plan. But the truth is, it does not always seem good in the moment. My current circumstances often feel really uncomfortable, and I cann

Praying Christian Women - 505 Praying Through Psalms 69: When the Waters Are Up to Your Neck!

Don't forget to grab your free scripture journal at PrayingChristianWomen.com/journal today! What happens when the rising waters of life—whether a devastating health diagnosis, financial ruin, or the slow erosion of your reputation—leave you feeling completely trapped and sinking into the mire? Join Jaime on the Praying Christian Women Podcast for a deeply comforting and raw devotional on Psalm 69, a powerful chapter that meets us in our lowest moments of panic and anxiety, while pointing us toward the ultimate hope of our Redeemer. Drawing from a vivid, real-life illustration of Alaska’s treacherous glacial mudflats and rapidly rushing bore tides, Jaime paints an unforgettable picture of what David meant when he cried out that the waters had risen to his neck with no foothold in sight. She explores how David’s desperate pleas give us permission to bring our own untidy, raw, and seemingly hopeless emotions directly to the throne of grace, reminding us that authenticity and trust go hand in hand when we are straining our eyes waiting for God to move. Along the way, we see how David’s deep distress foreshadows the suffering of Jesus on the cross, and Jaime thoughtfully unpacks the challenging concept of "imprecatory prayers"—those jarring verses where David calls down God’s wrath upon his adversaries. Through the lens of New Testament grace, she offers wise, practical perspective on shifting our focus away from flesh-and-blood enemies to recognize the true spiritual battle against the principalities of darkness. Come ready to lay down your deepest anxieties—the exhausting false accusations, the overwhelming debts, and the situations threatening to swallow you whole. Let this episode remind you that our Savior is bigger than the fiercest tides working against you. Because He is a God who hears the needy, who lifts our feet out of the suffocating silt to set us securely on high, and whose redeeming power can turn even the very seas that threatened to drown us into a chorus of praise for His glory. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Ben... - How to Find Hope Beyond Addiction

Episode Summary: What happens when God takes a man from a life of drugs, violence, and crime, and turns him into a vessel of hope and healing? On this episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson, I talk with Larry Huch, pastor, author, and former drug addict whose story is told in his powerful new book, From Junkie to Jerusalem. Once a cocaine dealer working with Colombian cartels, Larry’s life spiraled into brokenness, anger, and destruction. Yet God intervened, rescuing him from the pit of addiction and setting him on a path to freedom, restoration, and ministry. If you’ve ever doubted that transformation is possible for yourself or someone you love, this story will give you renewed hope in God’s power to break generational curses and bring lasting freedom. Quotables from the episode: Once you are an addict, the spiral into the abyss is both brutal and swift. You don’t always recognize the tipping point until it’s too late. I ran from the long arms of the law to the strong arms of the Lord. Because between the sports, the sand, and the drugs, I was looking for happiness. In dealing drugs, I really thought money was going to make me happy. It worked for a little bit. Then you're empty again. When I realized that Jesus didn't just come to forgive me, he came to break that generational, that family curse. The world says you never change. But the Word says ‘who the sun sets free shall be free indeed.' When I realized what Jesus had done for me, God had called me to tell my story so it could happen for somebody else. You're not responsible for the outcome. But when God is nudging you, he's ready to do a work. When you're drawn to somebody, don't look on the outside. Don't look at the way the world looks at them. So, if we focus on those negative thoughts, if we focus on those doubts, if we focus on the discouragement, our brain is going to search for more of that. It's not over, my friends. It's not over. God is in the restoration business. So you keep praying, you keep speaking, you keep declaring truth, your miracle is coming. Timeless Wisdom with Dennis Prager - Memory Is Who We Are | Sue Halpern

What makes our memories so important to who we are? On this episode of Timeless Wisdom, Dennis Prager speaks with author and researcher Sue Halpern about the science of memory, why we forget things, and what researchers are learning about Alzheimer's disease. Halpern, author of Can't Remember What I Forgot: The Good News from the Front Lines of Memory Research, explains how scientists are gaining new insights into the disease and exploring potential treatments that could one day slow its progression. Dennis also discusses his own lifelong struggle to remember people's names, while Halpern explains the connection between attention and memory and why stress can make forgetfulness worse. The conversation explores common memory problems, the effects of aging, and the potential impact of exercise on brain health. Listeners also call in with questions about memory loss, brain injuries, and other factors that may affect how the brain functions. From the personal significance of our memories to the scientific effort to understand and preserve them, this episode explores what memory reveals about the human mind and the promising possibilities emerging from memory research. The Bible Explained with Jenn Kokal - 2 Peter 2:12-17 - Don't Trust a Well Without Water

Today we continue in 2 Peter 2:12-17, where Peter paints a stark picture of false teachers: False teachers are like unreasoning wild animals. In their destroying, they will be destroyed. "Reveling in the daytime" is brazen hedonism. The prosperity gospel sells a pain-free life, but is not the Gospel of Jesus. The best false teachers are often the nicest people. Love-bombing or flattery does not make doctrine true; Scripture is the final test. Eyes full of adultery and hearts trained in greed entice unsettled souls for gain. Balaam was a "legitimate" prophet who still led Israel away from God for pay. Even his donkey saw more clearly than he did. Wells without water and storm-driven clouds promise life but give none. If a pastor shows these signs, pray about whether to confront, leave, or stay and fight. Related Episodes: 2 Peter 2:9-12 - Should Christians Speak Evil of Demons? Your Nightly Scripture - Trusting God When I Don’t Know What’s Next (Proverbs 16)

Evening Scripture Proverbs, Chapter 16 To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue. All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. The Lord works out everything to its proper end— even the wicked for a day of disaster. The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord evil is avoided. When the Lord takes pleasure in anyone’s way, he causes their enemies to make peace with them. Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice. In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. The lips of a king speak as an oracle, and his mouth does not betray justice. Honest scales and balances belong to the Lord; all the weights in the bag are of his making. Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through righteousness. Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value the one who speaks what is right. A king’s wrath is a messenger of death, but the wise will appease it. When a king’s face brightens, it means life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring. How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver! The highway of the upright avoids evil; those who guard their ways preserve their lives. Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud. Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord. The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction. Prudence is a fountain of life to the prudent, but folly brings punishment to fools. The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction. Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. The appetite of laborers works for them; their hunger drives them on. A scoundrel plots evil, and on their lips it is like a scorching fire. A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends. A violent person entices their neighbor and leads them down a path that is not good. Whoever winks with their eye is plotting perversity; whoever purses their lips is bent on evil. Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness. Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city. The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord. Evening Reflection Life often throws us curveballs. Just when we think we’ve got something figured out, inevitably things change. Our kids grow up, jobs change, our bodies shift, our community evolves, or a need arises. These are the exact moments that we are called to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding, because we know he will make our path straight (Proverbs 3:5-6). One notable moment in which we all had to collectively cling to God was in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic turned our lives upside down and swept across the globe. I remember walking miles around my neighborhood, praying and reciting verses to myself as a way of reminding myself that God would not leave us, even as the whole world began to panic. I had to practice

Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - A Prayer to Reject Fear and Walk in Christ's Light

October brings its seasonal theatrics, spiderwebs on front porches, haunted houses, costumes, and movies designed to make us jump. Most of it is harmless fun. We know the monster is wearing a mask. We can walk away when the movie gets too intense. But the fears we carry in real life are not so easy to turn off when October ends. Fear that something will happen to someone we love. Fear of receiving bad news. Fear that something painful from the past might happen again. Fear of a future we cannot control. These do not leave with the decorations. Seven-year-old Marleigh loves Jesus with the uncomplicated faith of a child. She knows He loves her, that He is with her, that He takes care of her. And she is also learning something most of us spend our whole lives learning: knowing Jesus is with us does not mean we will never feel afraid. One afternoon on a jet ski on a lake, a storm came up. The sky darkened. The wind picked up. The water churned. She was small and the lake was large. The storm passed, and she made it safely to shore. But something about that storm stayed with her. Now, whenever the sky begins to darken, fear rushes in before the rain ever does. Is there going to be a storm? Are we going to be okay? Isn’t that what fear does? Sometimes we are not afraid of what is happening right now. We are afraid that what happened before might happen again. A dark cloud today carries the memory of yesterday’s storm. And so we remind Marleigh: who is with you? Who takes care of you? Who can you trust even when you are scared? Not because storms will never come. But because when they do, she will never face them alone. That is the lesson for all of us. Not reaching a place where fear never comes, but knowing where to run when it does. Faith is not pretending the clouds are not dark. Faith looks at the dark clouds and remembers who is still Lord over the storm. Ponder Tonight The spirit God has given us is not one of fear but of power, love, and sound judgment. That does not mean we will never feel fear. It means fear does not get the final word. The fears that feel most persistent are often not about the present moment. They are the body’s memory of a past storm, triggering the same alarm even when the current situation is entirely different. The practice of asking who is with me, who has carried me before, and who will still be there when I am afraid is not a technique for eliminating fear. It is the habit of returning to what is true when fear is loudest. Growing in faith does not look like never being afraid. It looks like becoming increasingly practiced at running to Jesus when afraid, and trusting Him there. Tonight’s Scripture “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.” — 2 Timothy 1:7, CSB Your Evening Prayer Lord Jesus, You have not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and a sound mind. When the storms of life come and the clouds begin to gather, replace our fear with the reminder of Your greatness and Your presence. May we commit the things that consume our minds to You, and receive the peace of God that allows us to rest. We know You are with us. Remind our hearts of that tonight, in every season, in every storm. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Want More? Your Daily Bible Verse - Experience God's Extravagant Love (Romans 5:8)

Today's Bible Verse: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." — Romans 5:8 Have you ever wondered if you've done too much wrong to be fully loved by God? Romans 5:8 reminds us that God's love isn't something we earn through good behavior or perfect obedience. He demonstrated His extravagant love by sending Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners. God didn't wait for us to get our lives together before He made a way for us to be reconciled to Him. Crosswalk Talk: Celebrity Christian Interviews - Open the Eyes of My Heart Was Track Eight and He Had No Idea

Paul Baloche has been writing worship songs for over 30 years, and he still describes the process the same way he always has, show up with your loaves and fishes and let God do what only He can do. The writer behind Open the Eyes of My Heart, Above All, Hosanna, and Your Name has a new live album called Yes We Believe, recorded at Christ for the Nations in Dallas with students from 50 different nations holding their home flags in the crowd. Songwriting, the mystery of what catches on, and the prayer that started it all: Paul shares how Open the Eyes of My Heart was born out of Friday night prayer meetings, not a writing session, a cry of the heart that became a song he almost buried at track eight on the album. He also walks through how Above All sat with a different chorus for a year before a single morning with Lenny LeBlanc produced the verse that made it complete, why there is no formula for what God breathes on, and why the best advice he can give any worship leader is to stop trying to look like the YouTube version of someone else and simply be the most authentic version of who God made them to be. Highlights Why Open the Eyes of My Heart was song number eight on his second album, proof he had no idea what it would become How Above All circulated in his church for a year with a completely different chorus before Lenny LeBlanc wrote the verse that changed everything Why he keeps the last page of every journal for song title ideas, and how Above All may have come from a drug commercial The first song he ever had sung outside his church, I Love to Be in Your Presence, which was quickly translated into Spanish and spread across Latin America Why a worship song, to him, is any song that feels like singing a sincere and authentic prayer to the Lord Why he recorded Yes We Believe at Christ for the Nations with students from 50 nations, and what it meant to see their flags in the room Why he tells aspiring worship leaders to be trained, skilled, and rooted in community, and above all, to be the most authentic version of themselves Resources / Links / CTA Paul Baloche website: https://leadworship.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/PaulBaloche Album: Yes We Believe Integrity Music: https://www.integritymusic.com Follow, share, and explore more of Crosswalk Talk Follow, share, and subscribe for more faith-driven conversations on Lifeaudio Click to Listen to Signs of Life: UM News Podcast Season One | UMNews.org Join us this Fall for Season One of "Signs of Life," an original podcast from UM News.
