Confessions of a Christian Alcoholic with Jon Seid... - Going All In: Emily White on Needing a 'Miracle' to Get Sober, and How Jesus Provided It
EmilyG White is an addiction counselor who once filled a CamelBak with alcohol to walk to class, collected a nine-month sobriety chip while secretly drinking, and was eventually kicked out of rehab. She knew recovery language—and enough Christianity to look the part—but she was still trying to become presentable before coming fully to Jesus. After more than a year in sober living, Em followed every instruction she had been given and still relapsed when a friend hurt her feelings. The program had given her tools, but it had not given her an unshakable anchor. At the end of herself, she walked into Watermark Community Church with drugs in her car and told a volunteer she needed a miracle. What followed was not instant transformation. Christians listened without panicking, let her arrive broken, and kept showing up while the Holy Spirit worked. Then a parking-lot question—"What would it mean to go two feet in?"—became an act of life-changing, full surrender. Em shares why recovery communities must make room for mess, how families can love without relying on a formula, and what it looks like to endure discomfort without escaping it. Episode Summary: Trauma can shatter our sense of safety, identity, and trust—especially when it comes at the hands of someone who vowed to love us. In today’s episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective, I’m joined by a licensed professional counselor and marriage and family therapist whose story of surviving attempted murder is both heartbreaking and incredibly inspiring. Through her faith and her training, she has transformed her pain into purpose, helping others heal from grief, loss, and trauma. Today she shares how God meets us in our darkest moments and how we can reclaim our lives after the deepest wounds. This story is not about a villain and a victim. Instead, it is about a woman who, despite being victimized, chose healing and emerged victorious. Today we’re going to be talking about how to move from surviving to truly living again, even after the deepest hurts. Quotables from the episode: I will not be a victim. I was victimized. And on that day, I was a victim. But from that point on, I became I had been victimized, but I was not going to be a victim. I said, “I want you to know I will forgive you.“ I kept declaring these things over myself without even realizing it. Now, I did not forgive him that day, although I prayed for him that night when he was in jail. I had to work through that, but I knew that I will be forgiving. I will be joyful. I knew this is not going to be the end of my story because the devil will not have the last word. Let me maybe clarify too, because even though I declared all that over me, that doesn't mean I wasn't falling apart at times. You know, healing is not linear. I was weeping. I'd have good days and I'd had bad days. So, I don't want to give the impression that I just said, okay, life will be great. When people say, “where's God when bad things happen?” You know, sometimes we say it as an accusation, like God wasn't there. I love to say, ask the Lord where he was because he was there. I didn't know if I was going to live or die. But in that moment, I knew I would not have died alone. That it was Psalm 23 come alive that said, “yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you're with me.” So many people think, “well, we shouldn't walk through any valleys.” But the Bible says we're going to walk through the shadow of the valley, the shadow of death. The promise is he's not going to leave us. The hardest person to forgive was myself. I had to go back and rewrite those beliefs because I hadn't failed. I told myself and the enemy told me I had. I've come to learn that you can heal without forgiveness, but you can't be whole. I love to tell people that God is in the restoration business. There is no story that is too far gone. There is nothing he cannot redeem because that's what God's specialty is, is bringing beauty from ashes. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it can't happen. Hold on to God, who is the author of hope. He's not going to let you down. Your Nightly Scripture - Growing Into the Person God Created Me to Be (Proverbs 31)
Evening Scripture Proverbs, Chapter 31 The sayings of King Lemuel — an inspired utterance his mother taught him. Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb! Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers! Do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings. It is not for kings, Lemuel — it is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. Let beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are in anguish! Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Evening Reflection Have you ever encountered a season of change and thought, Why am I not where I want to be?” From education to careers or callings and relationships, it’s easy to compare ourselves to others, or even former versions of ourselves. Not only that, it’s as if we expect instant transformation on demand. When we operate in this way, we have to admit it’s frustrating. No matter how hard we work, it’s still never good enough. But what if God never asked us to be anyone except the person He created us to be? When you think about your life, what areas are you still growing in? Are there places where you wish growth would happen faster? I know there often is for me. But instead of putting myself down, I’m learning that growth is a process. The person God created me to be has many different seasons, but they’re all still me. And guess what? They’re all still you, too. I used to hate when people would compare themselves to the Proverbs 31 woman. Not because she wasn’t admirable, she was, but because becoming her felt impossible. Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - When Your Heart Needs Re-Centering
Colossians 3:1 is a reorientation verse, a gentle but firm redirection of where the heart has been pointing. Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is. This is not a vague spiritual aspiration, but a deliberate, intentional choice made against the constant pull of everything competing for our attention. The enemy knows this too. And he rarely starts with the obvious. He starts with the good things, the activities, the busyness, the worthy commitments that quietly fill every margin until we are too tired to notice how far our eyes have drifted from Christ. It rarely feels like a dramatic departure. It feels like a Tuesday that became a month that became a season, and suddenly we look up and realize we have been running on the edge of our own resources rather than from the center of something that actually sustains. The Father is not standing at a distance when we find ourselves there. He receives us back fully and without reservation. Guilt and shame are the enemy's tools for keeping us from returning. They are not God's response. He longs for restored relationship, not for us to linger in the distance feeling unworthy to come home. Our lives are already hidden with Christ in God, Colossians tells us. That is our true location, our eternal reality, our actual center of gravity. Everything else is a distraction from something that is already true. Fix your aim there tonight. Rest in His strength. And let Him draw your heart back to where it has always truly belonged. Ponder Tonight The enemy's most effective distractions are rarely obviously bad things. They are the good things that crowd out the best thing, filling our margins with worthy activity until Christ is no longer the center but simply one item among many. The drift away from God rarely feels sudden from the inside. It is almost always a gradual accumulation of small redirections that we notice only after the distance has grown. Guilt and shame after spiritual drift are not from God. They are the enemy's attempt to keep us from returning. The Father's posture is always one of restoration and welcome. Intentionality is the word Colossians implicitly calls for. Keeping our hearts set on things above does not happen by default in a world designed to pull our attention in every other direction. It requires a daily, deliberate choice. Tonight's Scripture "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God." — Colossians 3:1, NIV Your Evening Prayer Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gifts of faith and grace. Fix our eyes on Jesus and keep our hearts centered on Your goodness. Keep us from distractions that pull our attention away from You, even when they appear good and worthy and reasonable. Sustain us to seek Your Kingdom first and to rest in Your power rather than our own. When we stumble and stray, draw us back in Your mercy into close and full fellowship. We do not want guilt and shame to keep us at a distance from the One who receives us fully. Nazareth grew up in Kuwait as a Coptic Christian, moved to America with dreams of becoming rich and famous, and was on track to get there. NBC had a sitcom in development for him. His manager told him he was going to be the biggest star in the country. Then he went to church with a friend, walked forward, gave his life to Christ, and called his manager Monday morning to quit. After 250 F-words from his manager, he was released — and never signed with one again. God created humor, clean comedy is having its moment, and the only ticket price is showing up: Nazareth shares how he went from comedy clubs to prisons to stadiums to free community events where anyone who cannot afford a ticket simply picks one up, no questions asked. He has seen hundreds of thousands of people respond to the gospel at the end of his shows, and he believes the reason clean comedy is surging right now is simple, social media is so dark and filthy that being clean is the only way to actually stand out. Full Transcript Below: The Importance of Avoiding Favoritism By Vivian Bricker Bible Reading: “My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism” (James 2:1). Favoritism occurred in my family as my dad’s favorite was the oldest child, and my mom’s favorite was the middle child. As the youngest of three, I was never chosen as the favorite. Instead, I was seen as the “extra” child. As one can imagine, this has caused me to have long-lasting problems, such as a negative self-view and low self-esteem. If you genuinely want to obey God, you must give up the practice of playing favorites. Favoritism only hurts your children and makes them second-guess themselves. Studies have shown that the oldest child tends to be the favorite, often because they are more like their parents or take on more responsibilities than younger siblings. It is time to change these statistics; there needs to be equal love for each child. Within the family of God, there is no room for favoritism.

Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer for Your Legacy
Legacy is not built in grand, dramatic moments. It is built in the daily choices that accumulate over a lifetime: choosing honesty when hiding the truth would be easier, offering kindness when impatience is closer to the surface, forgiving rather than holding a grudge, and staying humble and teachable when pride feels more comfortable. Proverbs 10:7 draws a stark contrast between two kinds of legacy: a good and honest life leaves a blessed memorial, while a life of sin without God leaves something far less pleasant behind. The money we leave behind will be spent. Possessions will be lost. Worldly achievements will eventually be forgotten. But the people whose lives we touched will carry the memory of who we were and how we treated them. That memory — the fruit of a life spent walking closely with Jesus — is the most significant thing we can leave behind. It will inspire the people who come after us to trust God themselves. In a world that pulls our attention down to the level of a to-do list, this episode invites us to lift our eyes to the bigger picture: every day and every choice is building something. The question is whether we are being intentional about what we are building. And for those who look back on a legacy that does not yet reflect the one they want to leave, the good news is that God's grace covers the past and His mercy offers a fresh start. It is never too late to begin building differently. Today's Bible Verse "A good and honest life is a blessed memorial; a wicked life leaves a rotten stench." — Proverbs 10:7, MSG Ponder Today Legacy is built day by day through faithful, ordinary choices. It does not happen by accident and does not require dramatic moments. Honesty, kindness, forgiveness, and humility practiced consistently over a lifetime build something that outlasts us. The way you treat people today becomes the memory they carry tomorrow. People will spend your money, lose your possessions, and forget your achievements. But they will always remember how you made them feel and whether your life reflected the goodness of God. A life spent walking closely with Jesus leaves a sweet fragrance. The fruit of the Spirit at work in a surrendered life — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control — is the kind of legacy that inspires others to trust God themselves. Do not let your daily life shrink down to the level of your to-do list. Every responsibility, every interaction, and every choice is building something larger than the moment. Keep the bigger picture in view and make choices accordingly. It is never too late to start building a better legacy. God's grace covers the past and His mercy offers a genuine fresh start. Whatever the legacy built so far, today is the first day of building what comes next. A Prayer for You Today Dear God, thank You for the gift of life and for the opportunity to make a positive impact on the world around me. I want my life to honor You in every way. Forgive me for the times I have been selfish, impatient, or dishonest. Give me the wisdom and strength to live a good and honest life each and every day. Help me make choices that build a holy legacy — one that shows others the reality of Your love flowing through my life. Show me how to treat people in ways that leave a sweet and lasting blessing long after I have passed away. When I am tempted to say or do anything that would be a mistake, speak to me through Your Holy Spirit and lead me to make a better choice.
