Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer for Hope When Life Feels Dark
Standing in a kitchen on a normal Thursday morning, cordless phone in hand, ready to dial a familiar number — and then realizing, mid-reach, that Mom would not be picking up. She no longer lived on this planet. The sorrow of it washed over again, fresh and heavy. Heaven was certain, the reunion was coming, but time stood as a strong enemy between that moment and the promise. The distance between what had been and what would be felt like a thick darkness with no way to see through it. Romans 8:24-25 holds something that is counterintuitive but deeply true: hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? We often think that if we could just catch a glimpse of God’s good plan, just see something on the horizon, then we would finally have hope. Paul tells us it works the other way around. Real hope is exactly the kind that cannot be seen yet. It is the kind that sits with you in the dark, in the ordinary breaks of everyday life, when what you are waiting for is something you cannot hurry or fix. And the sense we need most in that darkness is not a glimpse of the timeline. It is the sense of His presence. Jesus does not wait at the other end of the darkness with hope in hand. He stands right next to us in the kitchen, in the middle of the moment, reminding us that we are never alone. Waiting is not a sign that He has forgotten. Waiting is the very place where He shows up so we can come to know Him more deeply. Paul’s logic is clear: if you already have it, you do not need hope. The kind of hope that carries us through darkness is the kind that holds on to what has not yet arrived. Waiting is not a sign that God has forgotten — it is where He shows up most deeply. The gap between what was and what will be is not empty. It is the very place where God meets us and makes Himself known in ways that easier seasons cannot produce. The sense we need most in the dark is the sense of His presence. Not a timeline, not proof of what lies ahead, not a glimpse of resolution — just the deep, settled knowing that Jesus is here and will never leave or forsake us. Hope is not off in the distance — it stands right next to us in the ordinary moments. It is not waiting at the end of the tunnel. It is present in the kitchen, in the break in the day, in the moment when grief arrives unexpectedly and reminds us of what we are still waiting for. Darkness does not mean hope has failed — it means hope is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Hope that only functions in the light is not the biblical kind. The hope Paul describes in Romans 8 is specifically made for the dark. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, You understand the weight of this moment I am holding. Though heaven feels far away, You are with me in the everyday moments of life. I confess that in the darkness, all I want is to see — light on a timeline, proof of what lies ahead. When I cannot see that, I think hope has failed. But waiting is not a sign that You have forgotten me. Waiting is the very place where You have shown up so I can come to know You more deeply. Help me, Lord, to sense that You are here. I do not need all the answers today. I simply need to trust You in the dark

The Walk: Real Stories of Faith - Danny Gokey: Jesus Over Politics, Country, and Everything
Danny Gokey did this interview from his car, minutes after walking out of a recording session, and apologized twice for the signal. It's a fitting entrance for someone who tells Kurtis later in the episode that he almost never cancels anything. He's in a new season professionally. After a first post-Idol deal that fell apart, he was dropped, and remembers thinking that if you can't make it off American Idol, maybe you can't make it at all. He signed elsewhere and had a good run, then Capitol, and is now with Red Street Records. He repeats what the label head told his manager back then, apparently without irony: I don't know why I'm signing Danny Gokey, but I believe I'm supposed to. Please don't make me lose money. He says he's got a lot of new music coming, and that this batch feels like the best work he's done. The reason why leads to the best story in the first act. On American Idol he sang whatever got a reaction, the growl, the gravel, the Michael McDonald and Michael Bolton textures, because that's what drew applause. Then he was in a studio with producer Bernie Herms, who stopped him mid-vocal and said that would sound great if he were Michael Bolton, but he wanted to know what Danny Gokey sounded like. Danny was thirty-three, and says nobody had ever asked him that. That question started the work of finding his own voice, and he credits the years since with turning experience into something like mastery. Then the conversation goes where you'd expect it to and doesn't flinch. Talking about his single "Jesus Over Everything," co-written with DOE, Danny says Jesus brought meaning to losing his first wife, Sophia, to the show, to remarrying. He walks through Joseph and Job to make the point: what makes suffering survivable isn't an explanation, it's God being in it. When Kurtis asks how he actually walked through it, Danny is direct. He had faith God would heal Sophia. It went the opposite direction, and it turned into a funeral. He was angry at God, and he says a lot of it was ignorance and assumption, that God had abandoned him. He lands on John 6, where the hard teaching drives the crowd away and Jesus asks the twelve whether they'll leave too, and Peter says where else could we go. That, Danny says, is where he was: mad, and staying. He warns about the thing he thinks does the real damage, assigning your own meaning to loss. This must mean I'm unlovable. This must mean God won't save me. Once you attach a meaning that came out of your own hurt, you miss what's actually happening. The hope section is worth the episode for worship leaders. Danny points to studies on hope, to Romans 15:13, and offers a picture he clearly uses a lot: faith is the engine, hope is the gasoline. Hope is a vision, but internal rather than external, and it's what lets you see a better day before there's any evidence of one. He describes losing Sophia as feeling like an amputation of the soul, and says hope was the thing that kept him moving through it. He also connects belief and hope tightly: your core beliefs drive whether you're hopeful or hopeless, and wrong beliefs bring wrong emotions. He includes himself in that. He's been in hopeless places, believed wrong things, and says he's responsible for his beliefs, decisions, actions, reactions and feelings, which he notes is not what our culture teaches. The middle of the episode is warmer. His parents made him sing, and he didn't want to. He remembers being twelve in the back seat, hearing his dad lean over to his mom and say your son's got a good voice, and being genuinely surprised. His first solo was at a water park karaoke stand, "Tutti Frutti," a scrawny kid with a growl, a crowd, high fives, and then straight into the wave pool. A youth pastor pushed him toward singing, and years later a pastor told him he was leading worship that day, to which Danny said no I'm not, and was overruled. Can pastors endorse political candidates? Troy Miller, president and CEO of National Religious Broadcasters, explains NRB’s Johnson Amendment lawsuit against the IRS. The Johnson Amendment was added to the tax code in 1954 by then Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. It bars 501(c)(3) organizations, including churches, from endorsing or opposing political candidates. Miller explains why NRB went to court in 2024 and why the case was narrowed to pastors speaking to their congregations. He also explains how a consent decree with the Justice Department now depends on an appeal to the Fifth Circuit over the Anti-Injunction Act. He and James clarify what the case would and would not change for churches, broadcasters, and podcasters. The conversation questions the assumption that keeping faith out of public life produces neutrality. Miller argues that someone’s worldview always guides law and policy. He traces a long history of pastors speaking to moral questions, from the Black Robe Regiment to Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms. The Bible Explained with Jenn Kokal - Job 9 - How Can a Person Be Right with God?
Today we dive into Job 9, where Job asks how anyone can stand just before God: "How can man be just with God?" Job accepts his friends' premise, then asks whether anyone can truly be righteous before Him. Our good works cannot make us righteous. Only the blood of Jesus cleanses us (1 John 1:7), not a stack of religious checkmarks. Suffering does not necessarily mean God is angry with you. Unseen things can be at work for a larger purpose. Job longs for an umpire between himself and God, a mediator, and this ancient book already points toward Jesus as High Priest. Job was wrong that God mocks the trial of the innocent. God lets Job put Him on trial and answers him. Scripture is unified. Tens of thousands of cross-references all point toward the Messiah. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.” Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. In that day you will ask in my name. Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - Remembering That Christ Has Already Won
When Jesus spoke "it is finished" from the cross in John 19:30, the word He used was tetelestai. It is a word with grammatical precision that carries theological enormity. It describes an action completed in the past whose results continue permanently. Not it is ending. Not it is mostly done. It has been finished and will remain finished. A complete accomplishment, requiring nothing more to be added. What was finished? The sacrificial payment for sin. The Old Testament promises for atonement. The work the Father sent Him to accomplish. The renewal of all things. Nothing more needed. Nothing left undone. Paul unpacks what that means for the powers of darkness in Colossians 2:15. There exist evil spiritual powers, forces bent on destruction. And on the cross, Jesus did not merely defeat them quietly. He disarmed them. He triumphed over them. He made a public spectacle of them. The language is decisive and almost surprisingly bold. The enemy has been not just stopped but humiliated, his weapons taken, his authority stripped. For those who have repented and follow Jesus, we have entered this finished work. The victory was won, both in history and in the eternal realms. Our redemption is not in progress. It is accomplished. This does not mean life will be easy or that trials will not come. The world around us can look very dark. But the hope we carry is not wishful thinking. It is an anchor for the soul, rooted in something that has already happened and cannot be undone. We are not waiting to see who wins. We are waiting for the full revelation of a victory already secured. Tonight, whatever fear or darkness is pressing in, stand in this: it is finished. And it will remain finished. Ponder Tonight The Greek word tetelestai describes a completed action whose results continue permanently. That grammatical precision matters spiritually. The victory of the cross is not weakening with time. It holds, now and forever. Jesus did not merely defeat the powers of darkness. He disarmed them, triumphed over them, and made a spectacle of them. That is not the language of a narrow escape. It is the language of total and decisive victory. Our trials, temptations, and fears do not contradict this victory. They exist within it, which is what makes hope an anchor rather than a wish. Renewing our minds to the reality of Christ’s finished work is not a one-time event. It is the ongoing practice of placing what we face today within the framework of what He has already accomplished. Tonight’s Scripture “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” — Colossians 2:15, NIV “It is finished.” — John 19:30, NIV Your Evening Prayer Heavenly Father, Thank You that when Jesus declared it is finished, Your work of redemption was fully accomplished. Strengthen our faith to stand in Christ’s complete victory over sin, death, and every power of darkness. Renew our minds when trials and fears surround us. Anchor our hope in Your absolutely complete work, not our own ability or striving. Help us walk in obedience, trusting Your Word, living with confidence that our future is secure in Your glory. His compassion moves toward you, not away from you. God Is Gracious You don't have to earn God's love or mercy. Even when you fall short, He offers forgiveness and the opportunity to begin again. God Is Slow to Anger God isn't waiting for you to make a mistake so He can punish you. He is patient and gives you opportunities to turn back to Him. God Abounds in Love God's love isn't limited or conditional on your performance. His love is part of who He is. God Is Faithful Even when circumstances make you question what God is doing, His faithfulness remains unchanged. You can trust Him while you wait. God Is Forgiving and Just God forgives wickedness, rebellion, and sin, but He doesn't excuse wrongdoing. We can approach Him with honest repentance, knowing He is both merciful and just. A Practical Question to Ask Yourself: Instead of asking, "God, what's your plan for my life?" try asking, "God, will you help me recognize your presence in my life today?"
