Love Life Sober - ADHD, Dopamine & Alcohol: Why Your Brain Keeps Reaching for a Drink

For women navigating ADHD, alcohol, and the mental patterns that can keep them reaching for a drink, understanding your brain can change the way you understand your drinking. In this conversation, Christy Osborne and Love Life Sober leader Brittany Tonkavich explore ADHD, dopamine, boredom, focus, motivation, and why alcohol can feel like the fastest way to make your brain feel better. Christy sits down with Brittany Tonkavich, a former coaching client turned Love Life Sober leader, for a fascinating conversation about ADHD, dopamine, and alcohol. Diagnosed with ADHD as a child, Brittany looks back at the different “jobs” she gave alcohol throughout her life—from excitement and risk-taking to focus, motivation, relieving boredom, and quieting a busy brain. She shares how understanding the connection between ADHD and dopamine helped her make sense of her drinking patterns and find healthier ways to give her brain what it was actually looking for. If You've Ever Thought... “Why do I feel like I need a glass of wine just to get things done, focus, or quiet my brain?” “Why does alcohol seem to make boring things easier or life feel a little more interesting?” Babe, this episode is for you. What You'll Learn in This Episode • Why alcohol can become appealing when your brain is searching for quick dopamine • How ADHD can affect motivation, focus, boredom, impulsivity, and risk-taking • Why you might reach for a drink to start a task or make something boring feel interesting • How Brittany replaced alcohol with healthier, effort-based sources of dopamine • Why understanding your brain can lead to curiosity instead of shame • How awareness can become the beginning of lasting change Brittany also leaves us with this beautiful reminder: “God made you. He didn't get it wrong. He got you right.” If something in this conversation makes you wonder whether ADHD could be part of your story, your Tiny New Action is simple: get curious about the patterns you're noticing and talk to a qualified professional. Awareness is the first step toward transformation. Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer for Our Labors Outside the Church Walls

Matthew 9:35-38 shows Jesus going throughout cities and villages, not staying in one place, moved by compassion for people who were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. The harvest is plentiful, He said, but the laborers are few. That call to labor is not limited to what happens within church walls. A kitchen can be a prayer room. A living room can be a sanctuary. A park, a library, and a splash pad can be holy ground. Raising children to know God, cultivating seeds of faith in young souls, teaching little hands to do kind things and change the world for God's glory — this is sacred and significant work. It may look nothing like serving on a worship team or greeting guests on a Sunday morning, but it is kingdom labor of the highest order. And the deepest truth in all of it is this: the labor is not what changes the world. His is. We are simply the vessels, emptied of ourselves and filled with nothing but His mercy and grace, offered faithfully in whatever ordinary and extraordinary places He has placed us. Today's Bible Verse "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." — Matthew 9:37-38, ESV Ponder Today Kingdom labor happens everywhere, not just inside a church building. Jesus went throughout cities and villages, moved by compassion wherever He found people in need. Our calling to labor for His kingdom follows the same expansive, boundary-crossing pattern. The ordinary places we inhabit are holy ground. A kitchen, a living room, a neighborhood park — wherever we bring God's love, hope, and truth, that place becomes a site of kingdom work. Location does not limit calling. Our labor is not what changes the world — His is. The most freeing realization in any season of service is that we are vessels, not the source. Being emptied of ourselves and filled with His mercy and grace is the whole job description. A Prayer for You Today Lord, I cannot thank You enough for the honor of laboring for Your kingdom. Thank You that I get to witness Your goodness and teach it to hearts outside the church walls. Your love, hope, and joy are ours to access no matter where we are, and it is our calling to share such gifts wherever we go. Let us remember this in the routine places we inhabit and the extraordinary places that big adventures take us. Let us follow You with boldness and enthusiasm and labor with humility and intentionality. We love and praise You, Lord. In Your holy name, Amen. Want More? Heartbeat - You Don’t Know Their Story

It’s easy to make assumptions about people based on what we see on the outside. But Jesus had a different way of seeing. Throughout His ministry, He noticed the people others overlooked: the poor, the outcast, the forgotten, and those pushed to the margins. 1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us that while people look at outward appearances, the Lord looks at the heart. Every person we encounter has a story, struggles we may never see, and a life that is deeply loved by God. Takeaways from this episode: We rarely know the full story behind another person’s life. Jesus consistently saw and valued people others overlooked. God looks beyond outward appearances and sees the heart. Compassion begins when we choose to see people as God sees them. Every person we encounter has inherent value because they are made in the image of God. Thinking Christian: Clear Theology for a Confusing... - Is Technology Neutral? Grok, AI Deepfakes, and Discipleship

James Spencer and Ashish Varma close out the series on narrowing with amplification — Marshall McLuhan's insight that technology extends human capacity, and what that means when the capacity being extended is our tendency to forget God. The conversation runs from forks and chopsticks to John Deere, from the fig leaves in Genesis to Albert Borgmann's distinction between things and devices: the wood-burning stove that gathers a household versus the thermostat that anonymizes everything behind the heat. Ashish pushes back on the common classroom line that technology is morally neutral, arguing that development and use are different questions and that a technique built for accumulation carries that logic with it. James traces the same tension through David refusing Saul's armor, the warning in Deuteronomy 8 about cisterns you did not dig, and Paul's rebuke of the Corinthian habit of following personalities — a habit our follower counts and platforms have made much easier. It ends with a hard look at AI image generation, the Minnesota law and the litigation around it, and two Old Testament laws about goring oxen and rooftop parapets that were written to protect people without stopping progress. Your Nightly Scripture - Thanking God for Bringing Me through Hard Times (Psalm 107)

Evening Scripture Psalm 107 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God’s commands and despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron. Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy. Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there. He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity, and sorrow; he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord. Evening Reflection As the day comes to an end, there’s something powerful about looking backward before looking ahead. Psalm 107 is one long reminder that God has always been faithful to His people. Throughout the chapter, we meet people in very different situations.

Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - Closing August Without Panic

A refuge is not a storm-free environment. It is a place of safety within the storm, which means God's presence does not eliminate our difficult seasons but transforms how we experience them. Carrying tomorrow's anxieties into today is one of the most reliable ways to drain the peace that God provides for the present moment. His grace is distributed daily, not in advance, which is an invitation to trust Him one day at a time. The question worth carrying into September is not how to have every detail planned, but how to remain close to the One who is the refuge. That proximity changes the season more than any amount of preparation. Many of the things we are anxious about in August have not happened yet and may never happen the way we are imagining them. Naming those specific worries and releasing them to God tonight is a more productive use of the evening than continuing to carry them. Tonight's Scripture "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." — Psalm 46:1, NIV Your Evening Prayer Lord Jesus, As summer begins to fade and fall is on our hearts, we look to You for strength. May we experience Your grace over our lives one day at a time, and not try to carry next month's burdens tonight. Help us rest in Your presence. Teach us to turn our panic into Your peace. May we not strive but surrender. Thank You for being our refuge, the place we are safe not because the storm does not come, but because You are in it with us. Let our first response always be to run to You. In Jesus' name, Amen. Want More? Christian Parent, Crazy World - Building Bridges, Not Walls, with a Child Who Questions the Faith (w/ Laurie Christine) - Archive Ep. 99

There is no greater heartbreak for a Christian parent than watching a beloved child drift away from the faith. Yet in today’s world, navigating doubt and rebellion in our kids is increasingly common — and even the most dedicated parents may find themselves walking the painful road of the prodigal. In this powerful and hope-filled episode, Catherine concludes her two-part “Best Of” series on Gen Z with Laurie Christine , originally aired on Redeeming the Chaos. Together, they tackle the hard questions: How do you parent a child who’s struggling in their faith? How do you protect your relationship and retain influence when your child is questioning, doubting, or rejecting core beliefs? What actions can help draw a wandering heart back — and what parental mistakes might actually push them further away? Seven Big Reasons Gen Z Is Leaving the Faith Catherine briefly recaps the top reasons young people cite for leaving Christianity, referencing Barna Research: Struggling with the existence of evil and suffering Perceiving Christians as hypocrites Belief that science contradicts the Bible Dismissing Christianity as a “fairy tale” Disillusionment over injustices in Christian history Apathy or perceived irrelevance of church Negative experiences with Christians or church Guidance for Parents Navigating a Prodigal Child's Journey With raw honesty and wisdom, Catherine draws from her own family’s story and years of hosting Christian Parent Crazy World. She and Laurie Christine outline practical steps — and critical mindset shifts — for parents of teens and adult children who are wrestling with faith: Prayer is your first line of defense. Catherine emphasizes the unique spiritual authority parents have in prayer over their children, describing the importance of persistent, faith-filled intercession. Know your stage of parenting. Are you a caregiver, cop, coach, or counselor? Catherine details how your approach must shift as your child grows, especially in the late teen and adult years. Lead with unconditional love. Affirm your love no matter your child’s beliefs or choices. Laurie Christine highlights the importance of commending kids when they open up about doubt or disagreement, not reacting with panic or punishment. Set and communicate healthy boundaries. While extending grace, be clear about the behavioral standards for living in your home — but avoid enabling harmful choices. Don’t give endless sermons. Teens know what you believe. What they need now is to see the love of Christ in action and to encounter God for themselves. Reject the urge to convince, convict, coerce, or control. Catherine unpacks how these tactics either step into God’s role or mirror the enemy’s strategies. Instead, keep your focus on love, wise counsel, and prayer. Humble yourself and own your mistakes. Apologize when you’ve erred. Humility builds bridges and trust. Releasing Guilt and Entrusting Your Child to God Every parent will wonder “What did I do wrong?” Catherine compassionately reassures listeners that even a perfect parent—God Himself—had two children in the Garden who chose rebellion. She delineates what is a parent’s responsibility, what belongs to the child, and what only God can do. Parents must let go of crushing guilt and trust God’s r

Your Daily Bible Verse - The Feeding of the 5000; It's Not About Bread (Matthew 14:16)

Today's Bible Verse: "Jesus replied, 'They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.'" — Matthew 14:16 What can the feeding of the 5,000 teach us about trusting God when our resources feel inadequate? Matthew 14:16 reveals that Jesus wasn't simply concerned with feeding a hungry crowd. He was teaching His disciples to trust Him when they couldn't see how a solution was possible. When faced with an overwhelming need and limited resources, Jesus told His disciples to step forward in faith. Want more encouragement throughout your week? The Happy Home Podcast with Arlene Pellicane - Trying to Be Happy is Making Kids Miserable with Dr. Jonathan Eckert

The pressure to be endlessly happy is leaving the next generation more anxious and isolated than ever. In his new book, The Happiness Crisis: How Adversity Can Build a Resilient and Joyful Next Generation, Dr. Jonathan Eckert calls for a culture shift that we can begin at home. How do we embrace adversity and see the value of challenges, instead of becoming parents who make everything too easy? Dr. Eckert explains the biblical connection between joy and struggle, and why removing adversity — "snowplow parenting" — prevents kids from developing resilience. Arlene and Jon work through real-life scenarios, including a child facing bullying and a teen caught using AI to cheat on a school assignment. The conversation closes with practical steps for helping kids rediscover purpose and joy through community and faith. Full Transcript Below: Remembering the Lord’s Deeds By Lynette Kittle Bible Reading: “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.” - Psalm 77:11 It seems that, as people, we so easily forget the good things in life much more quickly than the bad, like the cruel words someone spoke to us as a child or the way someone betrayed us. Whereas traumas, tragedies, heartaches, and disappointments sometimes seem impossible to forget, some even lingering for a lifetime, joyful and wonderful events and experiences are often easily forgotten. Maybe it’s why God calls us to purposefully remember His goodness and faithfulness in our lives, knowing the enemy can keep us focused and stuck in the sorrows and losses of life, forgetting all the ways God has been present and active in our lives.

Unhurried Living | Helping Christians Rest Deeper ... - Why We Think, Feel, and Respond Differently: The Enneagram at Work (Joey Stabile Schewee)

Why can two people experience the same conversation, meeting, or problem so differently? In this episode, Gem talks with Enneagram teacher, management consultant, and executive coach Joey Stabile Schewee, author of When Working Together Doesn’t Work, about what’s happening beneath our behavior and why understanding how we process the world can transform our relationships. Joey explores the Enneagram’s three Processing Centers: Doing, Feeling, and Thinking, including what she calls the “processing divide.” She also unpacks the three stances, Independent, Responsive, and Solitary, and how they influence our relationship with time, our reference point, and the ways we engage with others. Then Joey walks through all nine Enneagram types, offering a brief, accessible description of each and helpful clues for recognizing your own type. Whether you’re new to the Enneagram or have been using it for years, this conversation offers practical insight for greater self-awareness, healthier communication, and more gracious relationships at work and beyond. Praying Christian Women - 497 Can Secular Music Point Us to God? Our Tribute to Dolly Parton

Don't forget to grab your free scripture journal at PrayingChristianWomen.com/journal today! Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to worship God using a secular song, or if only Christian music can be used for prayer? This week, Alana and Jaime pay a heartfelt tribute to the late, great Dolly Parton, diving into a thought-provoking conversation on how to find the Holy Spirit in unexpected places—and how everyday music can become a powerful template for worship. In this episode, Alana and Jaime tackle the artificial divide between "sacred" and "secular" media that many Christians grew up with. They unpack the idea that if a song isn't promoting sin, it has the potential to draw us closer to the Lord, because we are called to do everything for His glory. They explain why taking pleasure in the beautiful, ordinary aspects of the human experience honors God's design for creativity, and why songs about family, unity, and love are deeply biblical. Jaime reflects on the spiritual themes in Dolly's "Coat of Many Colors" and shares a touching story about a crocheted prayer shawl given to her stepmom, highlighting how we can infuse our everyday actions with love and prayer. Alana then walks step-by-step through her personal method of using a physical Bible concordance to turn the lyrics of Dolly's "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" into an interactive, spiritually enriching journey through Scripture. You’ll walk away with a fresh appreciation for Dolly's beautiful legacy, a reminder of the incredible freedom we have to find God in all things, and practical wisdom on how to make everything—even a catchy tune—a springboard for prayer.
