Midsummer And The Return To Full Radiance
There is a moment today in the northern hemisphere when the sun will reach its highest point in the sky. It will hold there. Suspended in the summer sky . As if the whole of the cosmos is pausing to breathe. And then, slowly, it will begin its descent. This is the summer solstice. The longest day of the year. The peak of light. The fullest expression of the sun’s power on earth. And something in your body already knows it’s here. You can feel it in the way the evening light lingers. The way the warmth settles on the skin and stays. The way the body softens when the sun is present, as if it remembers something the mind has forgotten. Today on the solstice, on the west coast of Ireland, the sun will set close to 10pm and twilight will linger long after 11 pm. The sky will hold colour almost until midnight. The light will barely leave. And the land, the sea, the stone, the air will be saturated with the energy of the longest day. This is midsummer. And it is asking you to be here for it. The sun stands still The word solstice comes from the Latin “sol” meaning sun and “sistere” meaning to stand still. In the Irish language, the word for solstice is grianstad. Grian, the sun. Stad, stopped. The stopped sun. The solstice is a precise astronomical event. The earth is tilted on its axis at 23.4 degrees. On the summer solstice, the North Pole is angled closest to the sun. The sun sits directly over the Tropic of Cancer. Its rays strike the Northern Hemisphere more directly than on any other day of the year. The result is the longest day. The shortest darkness. The maximum light. And for a brief window, the sun’s position on the horizon appears to stand still. Its rising and setting points reach their most northerly positions and hold there before beginning the slow return southward. The sun pauses. The earth holds. And for a moment, the whole system is in perfect balance. This is what the ancient civilisations understood. This pause was sacred. What the ancients knew Ancient civilisations tracked the sun’s path across the sky with extraordinary precision. They noted its rising and setting points throughout the year. They observed the solstices as the moments when the sun reached its extremes. And they built monuments aligned to these turning points in the solar cycle. Stone circles. Passage tombs. Temples. Pyramids. All oriented with mathematical precision to mark the moment the sun stood still. This alignment was a living connection between humanity, the cosmos, and the rhythm of the universe. It was cosmology embedded in stone. An understanding that the cycles of the sun were the cycles of life itself. The solstice was a marker in the wheel of the year for planting and harvesting. It was the pivot around which the agricultural year turned. And it was woven into the spiritual life of every community that lived in relationship with the land. In Ireland, this memory is held in the stone. The stone circles common across the lands. Monuments built thousands of years before the written word, aligned to the movement of the sun with an accuracy that still astonishes. The people who built these structures understood something. That to live in alignment with the sun was to live in alignment with life itself. That the rhythm of the cosmos was the rhythm of the body. That the turning of the year was an invitation to turn inward, to pause, to recalibrate, and to receive. This knowledge was embedded in how they lived. It shaped their rituals, their gatherings, their agriculture, and their understanding of themselves within the greater whole. And then, gradually, this relationship was lost. Artificial light replaced the rhythm of the sun. The calendar replaced the seasons. The schedule replaced the body’s natural response to the turning of the year. And yet the body still knows what the longest day is asking for. To pause. to receive, to be still. Lugh, the shining one In Irish mythology, the summer solstice belongs to Lugh. Lugh Lámhfhada. Lugh of the Long Arm. His name comes from the Celtic meaning of “shining” or “light.” He is the god of the sun, of skill, of sovereignty, of mastery. He embodies the illumination and life giving power of the sun itself. At the solstice, when the sun reaches the zenith of its power, this is Lugh’s moment. The full expression of light. Of vitality. Of radiance. Of life force at its peak. In ancient Irish times, the constellation Orion was seen to carry the sun across the sky in his upraised arm at midsummer. And Lugh, with his long arm, was the one throwing the sun at the height of its power. The Milky Way was known as Lugh’s Chain. The great river of stars connecting earth to the cosmos, held by the god of light himself. Lugh was revered as a warrior. A craftsman. A leader. A master of every skill. He represents the peak of human capability lit by the fire of the sun. And his festival, Lughnasadh, falls at the beginning of August. The harvest. The moment when everything the sun has been nourishing reaches its fullness and is gathered in. This is the arc of the season. Bealtaine was the threshold into summer. The solstice is the peak of the sun’s power. Lughnasadh is the harvest of what that power has been growing. And you are inside this arc of summer right now. The thread from Bealtaine Seven weeks ago, we stood at the threshold of Bealtaine. When the land crossed into the light half of the year. The whitethorn bloomed. The gorse blazed gold. The air carried warmth for the first time in months. And something in you began to stir. You were invited to ask: what am I calling in? What is ready to bloom in me? What do I want fully alive within me this summer? The season has been answering ever since. The light has been lengthening. The warmth has been building. And whatever you seeded at Bealtaine has been growing beneath the surface, nourished by the increasing sunlight. Today, at the solstice, the sun illuminates what has arrived. Feel what is alive in you now. What has shifted? What has opened? What is present in you? The solstice asks you to see it. To receive it. To recognise your own radiance in the fullest light of the year. For those feeling disconnected And if the radiance feels distant, this is especially for you. The world has been loud. Relentless. Demanding. The pace has been constant. The noise has been overwhelming. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, the connection to yourself became harder to feel. The warmth inside becomes buried. The light within becomes harder to reach. The aliveness that the season is offering feels like something for other people. Something you would get to eventually. When things slowed down. When you had more time. When you had more energy. And yet here you are. At the peak of the light. And the sun is still shining on you. The sun rose this morning whether you noticed it or paused to feel it touching your skin. It will set tonight in its glory whether you are there to witness it or scrolling through a screen. The sun does this every single day. It rises. It warms. It illuminates. It sustains life on earth. A constant life force that we depend on.The warmth and vitality of the sun is for all of us to receive. And this is the quality the body recognises. Warmth that arrives with no demand. Light that reveals what is here. Energy that restores what has been depleted. The sun is always reaching it rays towards you. Even on the days it is obscured by clouds. Even on the days you were too consumed by the pace to feel it. Today, on the longest day, the invitation is simple. Step into it. Let the warmth reach you. Let the light find the places inside that have become cold or distant. Let the sun do what it has always done. Nourish you. Illuminate you. Restore you. The sun as mirror And remember the same intelligence that moves the sun across the sky moves through you. The sun is the most visible expression of this greater intelligence. And at the solstice, it is at its fullest. The peak of its power. The maximum of its light. And this is a mirror. Because the same light lives within you. The same vitality. The same radiance. The same life force that powers the sun powers the body. And at the solstice, you are being invited to remember this. You are made of the same intelligence that moves the cosmos. The warmth of the sun on your skin is a reminder. The light in the sky is a reflection. And the fire of the season is asking you to meet it with the fire within. Receiving the fullness The body remembers how to receive the sunlight. Watch what happens when you step outside on a warm day. The face turns toward the sun. The shoulders drop. The breath deepens. This is the body in its natural state of receiving. Instinctive. Immediate. Present. And the same capacity lives within you. The warmth of your own presence. The clarity of your own awareness. The radiance of your own aliveness. At Bealtaine, you were asked to dare to bloom. To step into the full spectrum of who you are. To allow yourself to be seen. At the solstice, you are being asked to receive the fullness of what has bloomed. To absorb the warmth. To stand in the light and let it reach every part of you. This is Lugh’s invitation. The shining one asking you to recognise the shine within yourself. The light within you is at its peak. Allow yourself to feel it. Allow yourself to be illuminated by it. Allow yourself to radiate it. This is the longest day. And everything in nature is at its fullest expression. The trees dense with leaf. The wildflowers covering every hillside. The ocean holding the warmth of the sun. And you, standing in the middle of all of it, are part of this expression. You are nature. The sun that shines on the land shines on you. The intelligence that moves through the season moves through your body. The light that fills the sky is the same light that lives in your cells. Feel this. Let it land.Absorb it.Let the body receive what the mind has been too busy to register. The sun is at its peak. And so is the light within you. Guided practice: Standing still with the sun This is an invitation to pause in alignment with the longest day. To stand still with the sun. To receive the fullness of the light and to connect with the radiance within you. If you can be outside for this practice, allow yourself to feel the sun on your skin. If you are inside, bring the feeling of warmth and light into your awareness. Invite it in. Step away from the day. Give yourself these few minutes. There is nothing you need to do right now. Nowhere else you need to be. Sit or stand comfortably. Allow your body to settle. Close your eyes if this feels comfortable. Or lower your gaze to soften your eyes. Begin with the breath. A slow deep inhale through the nose. Feel the air entering the nostrils. Feel the ribcage widen. Feel the belly expand. And a long slow exhale through the mouth. Sigh it out. Let it be audible. Let the shoulders drop. Let the jaw soften. Let the hands go heavy. Again. A slow deep inhale. Feel the chest open. Feel the belly expand. And release. Sigh it out. Let everything settle. Now bring your awareness to the sun. Even with your eyes closed, you can feel its presence. The warmth on the skin. The light through the eyelids. The heat of the day around you. Feel the sun reaching your body. Feel the warmth arriving on the surface of the skin. And feel it going deeper. Into the muscles. Into the bones. Into the cells. Allow the warmth to reach the places inside that have become depleted. Let the sun’s warmth meet those places. Let it soften them. Let it restore them. Take another conscious breath. Inhale the sunlight. Feel it filling the chest. The belly. The whole body. Exhale and release whatever has been weighing you down. Let the breath carry it out. Inhale the warmth of the sun. Exhale the weight of the world. Inhale the warmth of the sun. Exhale the weight of the world. And now bring your attention to the light within you. The same light that powers the sun lives in your cells. The same intelligence. The same vitality. The same radiance. Feel this inner light. Perhaps it begins as a warmth in the centre of the chest. Perhaps it is a glow in the belly. Perhaps it is a brightness behind the eyes. Wherever you feel it, stay with it. Let it grow. Feel the fire of the season meeting the fire within you. The sun at its peak. And your own light at its peak. Allow them to merge. The outer warmth and the inner warmth becoming one. And say to yourself, silently: I am filled with the radiance of the sunlight. Stay with this. I am filled with the radiance of the sunlight. Feel the sun standing still. And feel yourself standing still with it. Present. Radiant. Fully here. I am filled with the radiance of the sunlight. And now, gently, ask yourself: what has bloomed in me since Bealtaine? What is alive in me now? What is the harvest that this light has been nourishing? Let the answers arrive in the body. A feeling. A colour. A knowing. Receive whatever comes. This is the solstice illuminating what is ready. And carry this with you. The longest day will pass. The light will begin its return toward the darker months. But the radiance within you is constant. It was here before the solstice and it will be here long after. The sun stands still today. And in this stillness, you remember who you are. This is the return to yourself.
