Photo and audio by EIRANUThere is a moment in the year when the land knows it’s time.
The hedgerows thicken overnight. The gorse blazes gold on every hillside. The blossoms pop as it has done every May.Bluebells fill the woodland floor. Wild garlic carpets the shaded ground. The air carries warmth for the first time in months and the body responds before the mind registers the change.
This is May. Known in Celtic tradition as Bealtaine. This is the threshold into summer.
And something in you is responding too.
The meaning of Bealtaine
Bealtaine comes from the meaning of bright fire, being one of the great fire festivals of the Celtic wheel of the year. It falls at the beginning of May, halfway between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice.
For our ancestors on this land, Bealtaine was a crossing point. The dark half of the year had completed. The light half was beginning.
Bonfires were lit on hilltops across Ireland. Cattle were driven between two flames for purification and protection before being released onto summer pasture. Homes were decorated with yellow flowers, gorse, buttercup, primrose, to echo the fire and welcome the season.
And the whitethorn, known as the May Tree stood at the centre of it all. The whitethorn is sacred in Irish tradition and protected by deep reverence.
At Bealtaine, the whitethorn was decorated with bright ribbons, flowers, and sometimes candles, to create the May bush.
The whitethorn blooms only in May. Its white blossoms arrive exactly at this threshold, as if the tree itself marks the turning of the year.
For generations, the flowering of the whitethorn was the sign that summer had arrived. It is one of the oldest signals in the Irish landscape, one that the body still recognises even when the calendar has moved on.
Bealtaine was a celebration. Of emergence. Of vitality. Of life in full expression. The community gathered. There was music. There was movement. There was joy.
This was the understanding: that when the land was fully awake, you awakened with it. That the fire of the season was also the fire within. That aliveness was something to be celebrated, received, and shared.
Much of this tradition lives outside the rhythm of modern life now. Seasons pass and the shift barely registers. The body senses the change but the schedule rarely makes room for it.
And yet, the body still responds.
You can feel it now. In the pull to be outside. In the way your pace changes when the evening light stays longer. In the way the body begins to soften when it feels the warmth of the sun on the skin.
The body still carries the ancient rhythm. It still knows what this time of year is asking for.
It knows what it means to bloom
Look at the natural world right now.
Everything is in full expression.
The native oak and ash and birch have filled out. The hedgerows are dense with whitethorn blossom and elder flower and honeysuckle beginning to show.
Foxglove is rising in the ditches. Dog rose is opening along the stone walls. Cow parsley lines every road. The wildflowers have taken over every verge and hillside and field.
This has been happening since February. Small movements beneath the surface.
Roots extending.Buds forming. Energy gathering in the dark.
And now, it is all visible.
This is what blooming looks like. A slow accumulation of energy that finally reaches the surface and becomes something that can be seen. Felt. Received.
You have been in the same process.
Through winter, you slowed down. Through spring, something began to stir. Old patterns were examined. Old weight was acknowledged. Something started to loosen.
And now, here at Bealtaine, something in you is ready to come fully into the light.
The part of you that has been growing beneath the surface. The version of yourself that has been forming through every breath, every practice, every moment of presence you have given yourself this year.
It is ready to bloom.
To be fully visible. Fully expressed. Fully alive.
The full spectrum of yourself
Blooming asks something of you.
It asks you to step into the full spectrum of who you are.
Every colour. Every tone. Every octave.
The part of you that has been held back. The part that has been waiting for permission. The part that has been growing in the dark, gathering strength, preparing for this.
To bloom is to allow yourself to be seen. Fully. Completely. In the light of the longest days.
You may have spent a long time being partially visible. Showing some of yourself, yet holding the rest. Adapting to what was expected rather than expressing what was true.
And now, the season is inviting something different.
It is inviting you to dare.
To dare to step beyond where you have been. To dare to put yourself into the full light. To dare to let yourself be seen, appreciated, heard, and felt.
Because here is what the season knows: the fullness of aliveness is something you receive.
It arrives when you allow yourself to be fully present to it.
You may have felt aliveness in glimpses. A moment at the sea. A walk where the body suddenly felt easy and free. A conversation that left you feeling more yourself than before.
Bealtaine is the invitation to live in that frequency. To find your right octave in the world and stay there.
Receiving the fullness
There is a level of aliveness that becomes available when you allow yourself to receive it.
This is what summer offers.
The warmth of the sun on your skin. The sound of the sea meeting the shore. The feel of sand beneath your feet. The taste of coffee on a bench in the afternoon light. The smell of gorse in bloom. The sight of a sky that stays bright past bedtime.
These are sensory experiences. And they are also invitations.
Each one is an opportunity to be fully here. To feel what it is to be alive in a body, in a season, in a moment that will only happen once.
The body knows how to receive all of this. It was built for it.
When you allow yourself to slow down enough to be fully present to these moments, something happens. The body opens. The breath deepens. The senses widen. And a quality of aliveness arrives that goes beyond anything the busy mind can reach.
This is the fullness.
And it has been waiting for you. Just as you have been preparing for it.
All the slowing down. All the returning to the breath. All the softening and releasing and coming back to yourself. It was all leading here.
To a body open enough to receive. To a presence steady enough to hold it. To a life alive enough to feel it.
What are you calling in?
The whole of summer is ahead of you.
From here, the days will lengthen. The light will stay longer. The warmth will hold.
And there is an invitation in that.
So stand here, at the threshold of Bealtaine, and ask yourself:
What do I want for this summer ahead? What am I calling in to receive? What am I ready to nourish as it blooms within me?
What is it that I want to have fully alive within me this summer?
Dancing. Joyful. Resonant. In its right octave.
What am I ready to attend to? What is ready for my full presence?
You can feel the answers in your body. They are already here.
The summer will move quickly. It always does. But the invitation of Bealtaine is to be here now, at the beginning, and to set your intention for how you will meet it.
With full presence. With full aliveness. With the courage to bloom.
An invitation for a guided practice.
This is an invitation to pause and receive the fullness of this moment as we cross the threshold into the summer months.
Find a place where you can be present. Perhaps outside, in contact with the natural world. Or if you are inside, allow the feeling of this season to be with you. Invite it in.
Step away from the day to day. Give yourself a few minutes to be present, there is nothing you need to do and no where else you need to be right now.
Sit comfortably. Allow your body to settle. Make any adjustments you need to feel at ease.
Perhaps bring your shoulders up to your ears if that feels inviting, hold them there and then release feeling a little more spaciousness where you may have been holding tension.
Perhaps it may feel good to shake your head from side to side or in slow circular motion and be with the sensations arising with the movement.
Notice how it feels when you turn your attention towards your body and allow it to be expressed.
Now, bring your attention to your breath.
Notice it rolling in on the inhale. Notice it rolling out on the exhale.
Feel the air as it enters your body. The warmth or coolness of it. The texture. The aliveness in the breath itself.
Stay here for a few cycles of natural breathing.
Feel your breath rolling in on the inhale.Feel your breath rolling out on the exhale.
Rolling in on the inhale.Rolling out on the exhale.
Now, take a slow deep inhale through the nose. Fill up the belly with air. Feel the chest expand. The ribcage widen.
And then release with a slow long exhale through the mouth. Sigh it out. Let the sound carry.
Take another slow deep inhale. Feel the chest expand. The ribcage widen.
And release again. Sigh it out. Let it be audible.
Feel what happens as the body softens.
When we slow down our breathing we are inviting our body to relax.
Now bring your awareness to what is blooming all around you.
Feel the warmth.Feel the light. Feel the aliveness of this time of year.
Sense the energy of growth. Of blooming. Of everything reaching toward the sunlight.
And sense the same energy within you.
Something in you is also reaching. Also ready. Also in bloom.
Place one hand on your heart if this feels good.
And then ask yourself, if this feels aligned: what is ready to bloom in me now?
Stay with the question. What is ready to bloom in me now? Let it land in the body.
Allow the answer to arrive perhaps as a feeling.
A colour. A direction. An image.
Whatever surfaces, receive it fully. Allow your inner knowing to come online.
Welcome the intelligence present in this moment, to guide you in receiving whatever it is you need to know.
Feel the beauty of the natural world blooming around you and within you.
Breathing in, you can say to yourself: “I am in bloom.”
Breathing out, you can say to yourself: “I am fully alive now.”
Stay with this mantra.
“I am in bloom.”
“I am fully alive now.”
Feel the fire of the season meeting the fire within you.
“I am in bloom.”
“I am fully alive now.”
Feel the light. Feel the warmth. Feel the aliveness.
“I am in bloom.”
“I am fully alive now.”
You are here. At the threshold. The whole of summer is ahead. And you are ready to meet it.
Allow yourself to step through that threshold. Into the full spectrum of who you are.
Into the sunlight. Into the bloom. Into the fullness of the present moment.
Notice what is shifting in you now. What is opening up.What is blooming.
Take what resonates from this short guided practice into the day. Allow yourself to be seen in the full spectrum of who you really are.
This is the return to yourself.
