The Gift of Autumn
Photo & narration by EIRANU You can feel it in the evenings now. The light lowers. The air cools. The pull toward indoors. Summer is loosening its hold. Autumn is drawing in. We are in the crossing. That in between time where one season closes and the next begins, where the last of the summer lingers in a warm afternoon even as the season turns. You feel it before the mind names it. The body knows this turn. It responds to the knowing. Every season has its purpose. The year moves in a rhythm, and each season carries its own part in it. Spring births and plants. Summer grows and expresses. Autumn gathers and releases. Winter rests and renews. Each one depends on the season before it. The spring rises only from what rested through the dark. The harvest comes only from what was left to ripen. The whole year turns as a choreography of giving and gathering, doing and resting. And somewhere along the way, we stepped out of that rhythm. We turned the seasons into scenery. Weather passing outside the window, while our lives are built around a pace in the deep of winter more suited to the height of summer. Lit rooms, heated air, the turning of the year barely registers. Yet the body still remembers the rhythm. It still knows. To embrace the gift of autumn is to let the body do what it already knows how to do at this time of year. So pause here, and take stock. Notice the pace you have been holding, season after season, bright or dark. And feel this season inviting you to slow down and let go. Autumn is the exhale of the year. Think of the year as one long breath. Spring is the inhale, the rising and the reaching. Summer is the fullness, held at the top of the breath. Autumn is the long exhale, the releasing and the letting go. And winter is the pause, still and open, before the next breath begins. The inhale is the push. Always rising. Always growing. Always reaching for more. The exhale is the release and creating space for the next inhale. Autumn is the season that naturally exhibits the exhale. The letting go. The setting downThe settling in. The drawing of the breath all the way out, so the next one can come in full. What autumn is known for. Autumn is a season built to nurture as we turn from fullness toward rest. It teaches us about tending to ourselves. It offers the gathering in. This is the harvest, the reaping of all that grew. It is the moment to gather what the year has grown in you, and to receive it. To take stock of the fullness of what summer delivered. To let it be acknowledged, before the next season begins. It offers the letting go in a glorious way. The leaves turn gold and copper and crimson, in the very act of falling. That there is a beauty in letting go. The bare tree stands complete, having released its bounty. Autumn shows you that you can release in a glorious way too. It offers the slowing down. The sap draws down. The energy returns to the root. As the days shorten the invitation is to go slower and to root down. And it offers the turn inward. As the light withdraws outside, it turns you toward the inside. The warmth of the hearth. The flame of a candle flickering. The warming aroma of soup on the stove. There is a pull to reflect, to draw close, to come home to yourself. In the turning of the year, Autumn provides all you need to return to yourself. The beauty in the turning. There is so much beauty to behold, when you slow enough to receive it. The light lower and golden now, softer than it was, catching everything it touches. The leaves turning, gold and copper and crimson, falling slowly from the trees. The morning mist. The crispness in the air. The first coolness that has you reaching for warmth. The branches and hedgerows heavy with berries. The smell of damp earth and woodsmoke. The sky changing colour quickly, cloud and light and sudden rain, and a rainbow when the sun breaks through. The shorter evenings drawing you in. Whatever the season looks like where you are, it is turning now, and to witness it, fully, is one of the great pleasures autumn is offering you. Relish fully in it. The rituals that restore you. A season is inhabited through its rituals. Small, repeated, embodied acts that bring you right into it. The foraging in the hedgerows, blackberry and sloe, the picking itself a kind of presence. The warm kitchen after, the jam on the stove, the crumble, the soup, the fresh bread. The first fire lit. The first candle against the dark. The wool coming out of storage, the cosy knits, the blanket, the thick socks. The walk to witness the season turning, leaves underfoot, the geese overhead. The warming foods and the seasonal spices. The earlier nights that make rest feel good again. The autumn clear out, the letting go of what is done, release made real. Remind yourself of what this time of year means to you. What are your favourite autumn rituals? What small acts bring you into this season? Begin them now, and let them carry you through this time of transition. The slow deep exhale. Give yourself permission to consciously exhale slowly and deeply throughout this season. This signals to your body it is ok to slow down, release, let go and turn in. An unconscious exhale is a collapse. You are carried into autumn depleted, the pace still driving you, until the body finally gives out, the cold, the crash, the long tiredness. A conscious exhale on the other hand is a release. You let go on purpose, with care, and it restores you. Same season. Two entirely different experiences. And the difference is conscious presence. So exhale with care. Match your pace to the daylight, and let the day soften as the evenings draw in. Rest as the body asks for more of it. Make the rituals conscious, the true taste of the blackberry, the real warmth of the fire, so the ritual becomes the practice. Release what is complete, on purpose. Receive the comfort, this is the perfect season to indulge in snuggling in. And let the breath itself be the practice. The long slow exhale is a practice you can return to at any hour of any day. Because the season is designed to care for you. The slowing, the warming, the gathering in, all of it is care built into nature. To live with autumn is to let nature care for you. Set your intention for the season ahead. And here, at the turning, is the moment to plant an intention for the season to come. An intention is more than a wish. It is a direction you choose with the whole of you, on purpose rather than by accident. You set it with clarity, aligned with what is true for you, and the body begins to organise around it. Your attention turns toward it. Life begins to move with it. So ask yourself. How do I want to move through this season of autumn? What care do I need to allow myself to receive. How do I let autumn nurture me. A guided practice. To receive the gift of Autumn. I invite you now to join in a guided embodied practice to set the intention to receive the gift of autumn. Find a space where you can be still. Where you can be undisturbed. Give yourself these few minutes. This time is yours, and all else can wait. Sit comfortably, or lie down. Let your body settle into whatever holds it. Allow your eyes to close, or soften your gaze. Bring your attention to your breath. Feel the inhale arrive. Feel the exhale release. Take a slow deep breath in through the nose. Fill up your belly with air. Let the ribcage widen. And a slow long exhale through the mouth. Sigh it out. And repeat. A slow deep breath in through the nose. Fill up the belly with air. Let the ribcage expand. And a slow long exhale through the mouth. Sigh it out. Let the shoulders drop, the jaw soften, the limbs grow heavy. Now bring the summer to mind. Whatever it gave you. The long light. The warmth. The ease. The JOY. Let those moments return, and feel them in the body. And on the next exhale, offer the summer your gratitude. Say softly within. “Thank you. I received you. I carry your warmth with me.” Let the summer season close, with gratitude, held completely. Now feel the turn of the wheel of the year towards autumn. The drawing in. With each breath, bring your attention inwards, the way the land draws its energy down to the root. There is comfort in the rooting down. A slower rhythm the body has been waiting for. And from this settled place, set your intention for the season ahead. Ask within. “How will I nurture myself this autumn?” Let the answer come. A feeling. A word. An image. A knowing in the body. Whatever comes, receive it. Allow the intention to root down and make space in your life so that you can come back to it over and over again. Say gently to yourself; “I intend to nurture myself this season, to create space to release what I don’t need and to slow down.” Rest here a moment. Your summer honoured. Your autumn intention planted. Your body settled in the turn of the season. And when you are ready, let the breath come back to its own natural rhythm. Feel the room around you. Feel the gratitude, the intention, the warmth of summer, the turn towards autumn, the comfort it brings, bring all of this into your day ahead. On reflection. Autumn asks one thing of you. To turn from the doing, toward the tending. The year has given you its fullness, and now it offers you its rest. The exhale after the long inhale. The gathering in after the reaching outwards. So let yourself be slow. Let yourself release what is complete. Let yourself root down and turn in. This is the season that nurtures you, when you move in step with it. Its slowing is care. Its letting go is care. Its drawing inward is care. Receive it. Let this be the season you nurture yourself, making space to come home, to return to yourself, over and over again.
