The Life You Have Been Missing.

Right now, as you read or listen to this article, notice where your awareness has been. Do you recall what you have just been doing vividly or perhaps there is a hazy recollection? Have you ever stood somewhere and wondered to yourself, what am I doing here without recalling what brought you there. As if you were sleep walking and just woke up fully clothed. Think about driving a familiar route. You arrive and you have little memory of the journey. The body drove. The eyes saw the road. The hands turned the wheel. But your attention was somewhere else. The mind was on something that happened three hours ago or something that might happen tomorrow. This is autopilot. And it is how most of your day is spent. You are physically present. Your eyes are open. You are going through the motions. But the awareness of the experience you are having is somewhere else. The mind has taken over and the body is just carrying out the programme. This is what autopilot feels like. Autopilot is the mind running the show while the body follows instructions. It can operate entire days, entire weeks, entire stretches of life while the mind is elsewhere. Processing. Planning. Worrying. Replaying. Rehearsing. You eat on autopilot. The food goes in but the taste, the texture, the savouring, the appreciation is absent from the act of eating. Conversation plays out on autopilot. Responses are automatic, the words come out but the connection, the presence with the other person, the actual exchange of something real between two human beings is absent. Autopilot carries your feet throughout the day. Walking from one space to another without memory of the transition, no sense of the ground beneath your feet. Being on autopilot means you are living from the mind’s version of reality rather than from the body’s direct experience. And while this is happening, life is passing by. The body is aware while the mind is elsewhere. Autopilot becomes the default mode of operation until you learn how to override it and experience a more vivid way of living. The practice of awareness can override autopilot. The way to have a more vivid life is to become aware of what you are doing while you are experiencing it. To observe yourself while you are living your own life. To realise the difference of being on autopilot compared to having a full experience of living. Most of the time when we are in our everyday surroundings, doing routine activities we simply do not notice any of it. The last food you ate what do you recall? Did you taste it? Or did the eyes stay on a screen while the mouth moved and the food disappeared? Did you notice the sky last evening? The colour of it. The way the light faded. The clouds moving. Or did the day pass from morning to night while the sky was something you walked beneath and forgot to look up at? There are daily moments that can make your actual experience of being alive more vivid and mostly they go undetected. The air on your skin. The ground beneath your feet. The sound of the wind. The warmth of a cup in your hands. The feeling of water on your face. The weight of your body settling at the end of the day. When the mind is elsewhere, these experiences pass by unnoticed. One after the other. Day after day. This is what autopilot costs you. It’s the difference between living life in high definition or in low resolution. The contrast is stark but you have to see it first to believe it actually exists. High definition is sharp, vivid, rich in detail. Every colour saturated. Depth, clarity, presence. Everything comes to life. Low resolution is flat, muted, blurred. The outlines are there but the detail is missing. The colour is drained. The depth is gone. And everything else is stripped down. Autopilot is living life in low resolution. You are getting the shapes but missing the beauty. The mind is processing just enough to keep moving. And the full, vivid, felt experience of being alive is passed by unregistered. Awareness is life in high definition. Every sense open. Every moment landing fully. The world becomes rich again. Vivid. Textured. Alive. And you realise that this is how life was always meant to be experienced. The resolution was always available. You just had the settings turned down. This is what you have been missing. And this is what becomes available when you return to yourself. What is waiting for you in the present moment is astonishing When you are fully here, fully in the body, fully in this moment, something shifts in the quality of your experience. Colours become more vivid. The green of the leaves is a green you feel rather than just see. The blue of the sky has a depth to it that the busy mind would have flattened into background. The light glistening on the water catches something inside you. And you realise you have been looking at the world through a filter and the filter has just been removed. Sound opens up. You hear layers. The birdsong that was always there but the mind was too busy to receive. The wind moving through the grass. The rhythm of the waves. The silence between sounds, which is itself alive and full. And you realise that the world has been speaking to you all along and you are only now hearing it. Your sense of smell sharpens. The salt air. The rain on warm earth. The scent of a flower. And something in you opens. Touch becomes alive. The texture of the bark beneath your fingers. The warmth of the sun arriving on your skin. The cold of the water on your feet. The weight of a stone held in your palm. Every surface, every temperature, every contact between the body and the world becomes an experience the mind was too occupied to register. And then something deeper arrives. Awe. The feeling of standing in front of something vast and feeling yourself inside it rather than separate from it. The stars appearing at night. The sheer scale of the night sky. And the body recognises that it is part of this. Wonder. The kind you had as a child before the mind learned to categorise and dismiss. When you are present, the ordinary becomes astonishing. Because you are actually seeing it in high definition for the first time, even though it has been that way all along. Delight. The spontaneous rise of something joyful in the body for no reason the mind can explain. The body responds to the aliveness of the moment and something in you lights up. A bird landing on the wall beside you. The shape of a cloud floating by. The sound of laughter carried on the wind. And then there is the feeling that can only be described as magic. The sense that life is communicating with you. That the butterfly crossing your path means something. That the song playing as you walked through the door was carrying a message. That the timing of this moment, this encounter, this experience is too precise to be accidental. The greater intelligence is moving through everything and when you are aware, you feel held by it. You feel part of something vast and intricate and alive. This is what is available in the present moment. This is what the body has access to when the mind steps aside. And this is what you’ve been missing while the mind was running through the day on autopilot. The body is always in the present moment It is through the body that you can learn to pull yourself out of absence into awareness. Checking in with how you are feeling in your body right now. Bring your attention inward. Feel what is here. The tightness in the chest. The holding in the jaw. The tension of the shoulders. All of it. The body is always communicating in real time. And the check in is simply the moment you choose to listen. This can happen anywhere. In the middle of a meeting. Walking to the kitchen. Sitting in traffic. Lying awake in the middle of the night. When you listen to how you are feeling in your body in real time, a follow up question arrives naturally. What do I need right now? The body knows what that is. A pause. A sip of water. A stretch. Maybe it needs you to step away from the screen. Five minutes of stillness. Sleep. This is how you resource yourself. By asking the body. By listening. And by responding to what is actually here rather than what the mind says should be. And from that response, something shifts. You are creating ease. Actively. In real time. One small choice at a time. One moment of listening followed by one act of care. The breath before you open the email. The pause before you write the respond. The awareness comes online to heighten the moment. You know exactly what you are doing as you are doing it. The walk where you feel your feet on the ground. The moment you step outside and feel the air, the temperature, the quality of the day on your face. The drive where you see the road, the fields, the sky, and arrive with a memory of the journey. The pause between one task and the next where you feel the body rather than immediately reaching for the phone. These are the moments where the practice lives. In the middle of the life you already have. The check in brings you into the body. The body brings you into the present moment where life is happening in full technicolor. Notice the habits that drive on autopilot There are patterns running through your day that are invisible because everyone around you is doing the same thing. Reaching for the phone first thing in the morning. Scrolling before sleeping. Filling every gap with noise. Eating with the eyes on a screen.Binge watching endlessly. These are behaviours the culture has normalised. And each one keeps you in the head, away from the body, disconnected from the present moment. The shift begins with seeing them. The change is simpler than you think. Subtle shifts. Small moments where you choose differently. Leave the phone in another room for the first ten minutes of the day. Feel the morning instead. The light. The air. The body waking up. Eat one meal with full attention on the taste, the texture, the body receiving it. Being nourished. Move your body for a few minutes. Feel your feet on the ground and allow your limbs to show you what they need. Look up from the screen and feel the room you are in. Feel the air on your skin. Feel the body in the space. Each of these is a doorway out of the mental world and into the embodied one. And each time you walk through that doorway, you are choosing a different relationship with yourself and with life. These shifts are subtle. And they are profound. Because they interrupt the loop. They break the pattern of constant mental activity. And in the gap that opens, the body settles. The breath deepens. Presence arrives. And in presence, something becomes available that the busy mind has always missed. It is an act of tuning in. To yourself. To the present moment. To the intelligence that holds all of life in motion. Every time you pause. Every time you breathe. Every time you tune in you are tapping into this field of awareness. And from this field of awareness, you are guided. By a knowing that lives beyond thought. By an intelligence that knows exactly what is needed. This is what the practice opens. This is what the body gives you access to. And it is available every single time you return. When you are fully present in the body, fully in awareness, and connected to the greater intelligence through the present moment. You know what is right for you, the felt sense of yes or no arrives in the body instantly, clearly, with total certainty. You meet someone for the first time and you feel the alignment or the misalignment immediately. You trust your knowing. The right words arrive at the right moment. The thing that needed to be said comes through you rather than from you. And it lands perfectly. You find yourself in the right place at the right time. The coincidence that is too precise to be random. The conversation that arrives exactly when you needed it. The opportunity that shows up the moment you are ready for it. The intelligence is orchestrating something the mind could never have planned. Decisions become clear. The confusion lifts. You feel the direction rather than think your way into it. The body leans toward what it trusts and away from misdirection. Creative ideas arrive. Solutions appears just when you need them. Inspiration comes from a place beyond thought, through the body, through presence, from the field. You feel when to move and when to stay still. The timing of things becomes felt rather than calculated. You act only when the moment feels right. The intelligence has a rhythm and you are moving with it. You feel connected to the natural world in a way that is beyond words. The trees, the ocean, the sky, the earth beneath your feet. You feel part of it all rather than separate from it. The same intelligence running through you is running through everything. And you feel it. Everything is connected. You can sense what your body needs before the symptoms arrive. The early signal. The subtle communication. The knowing that something needs attention before the mind would have noticed. The body is always ahead of the mind when you are listening. You feel grateful for things the mind would overlook. The ordinary becomes extraordinary when you are fully present for it. A breath. A taste. A sight. show notes

It’s the difference between living life in high definition or in low resolution. The contrast is stark but you have to see it first to believe it actually exists.

This is what you have been missing.

And this is what becomes available when you return to yourself.

What is waiting for you in the present moment is astonishing

When you are fully here, fully in the body, fully in this moment, something shifts in the quality of your experience.

This is what is available in the present moment. This is what the body has access to when the mind steps aside. And this is what you’ve been missing while the mind was running through the day on autopilot.

The body is always in the present moment

It is through the body that you can learn to pull yourself out of absence into awareness.

Notice the habits that drive on autopilot

There are patterns running through your day that are invisible because everyone around you is doing the same thing.

A breath. A taste. A sight.

The intelligence reveals the beauty in what the busy mind dismisses as unremarkable.

You suddenly realise all that you have been missing and no longer want to continue living on autopilot.

This is what the return to yourself means

Every article has ended with these words. And here is what they have been pointing to all along.

The return to yourself is the return to the body. To the intelligence that has been running through you. To the knowing that has lived in sensation, in the breath, in the felt sense of what is true. To the ease that is your natural state.

It is the return to your own uniqueness.

To what you feel. What you know. What is authentically yours.

It is the return to the present moment. The only place the body exists. The only place ease is found. The only place the greater intelligence is accessible.

And it is the return to a relationship with yourself that has been waiting for you all along.

A relationship built on trust rather than criticism. On listening rather than managing. On presence rather than performance.

This is what every breath has been pointing toward. Every practice. Every article. Every invitation to slow down, to pause, to listen.

This is the return to yourself.

Guided practice of returning to yourself

You can do this wherever you are right now. All you need is one conscious breath and the willingness to stay aware of what is happening during this short practice.

Begin by noticing where the mind has been.

The list. The plan. The conversation. The projection. The stories Just notice. You are simply becoming aware that they have been running on autopilot.

And now bring your awareness to the body.

Feel the feet on the floor. The contact between you and whatever is holding you. The chair. The ground. The surface beneath you.

Feel gravity holding you here.

And take one slow conscious breath. A deep inhale through the nose. Feel the air entering the body. Feel the ribcage widen. Feel the belly expand.

And a long slow exhale through the mouth. Let the shoulders drop. Let the jaw soften. Let the hands rest wherever they are.

Bring your awareness to your inner world.

Now ask: how am I feeling right now?

Listen. In the body. Feel what is here.

Perhaps there is tightness. Perhaps there is holding. Perhaps there is something the mind placed in the body that the body is ready to release.

And ask: what do I need right now?

Listen again. The body knows. It has always known.

Take another breath. Slow. Full. Steady. Complete.

Feel the settling. Feel the ease arriving. Feel the difference between the mind’s story and the body’s present experience.

This is the natural state of being. It has been here waiting for you to arrive.

Now notice your surroundings. What can you see? What can you hear? What can you feel on your skin? What is the quality of the air around you?

You are here. You are present. You are in the body.

And in this moment, the mind’s stories are simply thoughts. And the body is at ease. And you are connected through the body, through the breath, through the present moment to an intelligence far greater than the individual mind.

Repeat silently:

I am here. I am aware. I am connected.

Again.

I am here. I am aware. I am connnected

You can return here any time. One breath. One moment. One return.

Carry this with you. Into the next hour. Into the next conversation. Into the next moment that asks something of you. The body is always here. The breath is always available. And the return to yourself is always one moment away.

Reflection

Unawareness means living on autopilot.

The habits continuing. The mind running. The absence of experience.

The world pulling you outward, faster, further from yourself.

And through it all, the body has been here. Present. Patient. Carrying an intelligence that knows exactly how to restore you.

The return to yourself is something you choose. Again and again. In the moments that make up your life.

One breath at a time. One return at a time. One moment of presence at a time.

And every time you choose it, you are living from a different place.

A place of ease. A place of knowing. A place of presence.

This is natural wellbeing. This is the natural state.

This is the return to yourself.
