Authenticity is the most radical thing you will ever express.
It is the full, unfiltered, unrehearsed expression of who you are. The version of you that only you can be.
The one that has your rhythm. Holds your unique frequency, Shapes your way of moving through the world.
And yet, so many of us spend our lives looking outward studying others.
How they move. How they speak. How they present themselves.
Seeing in them what we are unable to see in ourselves. Admiring the very qualities we already carry but have learned to hide even from ourselves.
This is where the performance takes root. In the emulation of others. In the constant shaping of yourself to fit a mould that was built by someone else, for someone else.
In the careful construction of a version of you that looks right, sounds right, fits right, but feels like borrowed clothing.
And all the while, the most extraordinary expression of life, the one that is uniquely yours, the one that carries a frequency only you can hold, stays hidden away. Waiting. Beneath the performance.
The freedom of being yourself is the most natural thing in the world. And it is also the thing most people have moved the furthest away from.
Last week article explored the gift of radiance that is unlocked by presence. And how stepping into presence is supported through consciously breathing amid the backdrop of the natural world.
Nature is the portal that can bring you home to your body, to your senses, to the here and now and back to yourself. Back to the radiance that has always been here.
And last week we touched on the role of resistance in obstructing the path to presence and the freedom to be yourself.
In this article we explore how resistance shows up.
Resistance to presence.Resistance to being seen. Resistance to your own authenticity.
What the busy mind is really protecting
Resistance is fed by staying busy.
The busy mind is doing more than keeping you occupied. It is keeping you hidden.
Every time it reaches for the phone, the list, the next task, it is pulling you back into the performance.
Back into the adapted self, the version of you that was shaped by expectation, conditioning, and the need to be seen a certain way.
The adapted self thrives in the doing. In the planning. In the managing. In the constant motion.Staying constantly active from one thing to the next. And as long as the mind stays busy, the performance continues. The adapted self stays in charge. And the real you stays beneath the surface.
This is what the busyness is actually serving. It is a cover against being seen. Against being visible. Against the one thing the adapted self was built to prevent.
Authenticity.
Because if you stop doing, if the mind settles, if the performance drops, what is left is you. The real you. The unedited, unmanaged, unperformed version of yourself.
And for the adapted self, that feels like the most dangerous thing in the world.
What the adapted self was built to do
The adapted self was built for a reason. It was a response to what was needed at the time it was built.
In childhood. In the family. In culture. In the classroom. In the workplace.
In every environment that asked you to be something they needed you to be.
It learned to read the room. To adjust. To present the version of you that was most likely to be accepted, approved of, and kept safe.
It helped you navigate. It helped you belong. It helped you survive environments that may have had very little room for the real you.
And it served you well. For a long time.
But here is what is happening now. You start to realise that the adapted self has served its purpose. And what lives beneath it, the authentic self, the version of you that was always here, is ready to be expressed.
And the adapted self can feel it. It can sense that its role is dissolving. That the structure it built is being outgrown. That the version of you it created is being called to step aside.
This is what makes the grip tighten. A survival mechanism kicks in, The mind reaches for the list, the phone, the next distraction. This is the resistance you feel when presence calls and something in you pulls away.
It is the adapted self, holding on. Doing what it was built to do. Protecting you from being seen.
And it is time to let it know:
You are safe now. You are ready now. You are here now.
When you are in the present moment, courage is by your side.
The courage of vulnerability
Presence opens the door. But vulnerability is what walks you through it.
Because you can be present and still hold back. You can arrive in the body, soften the breath, feel the senses open, and still keep the final layer of protection in place.
Beyond that final layer is this: the willingness to be seen as who you actually are.
Unedited. Unmanaged. Unhidden.
And at first this can feel like being exposed. This is where nature teaches us the way.
Every living thing in the natural world is fully itself, all the time. The oak is simply an oak. The ocean is simply the ocean. The wren sings because that is what it is.
Nature is always in full, present, unedited expression.
And vulnerability is the natural state of all living things. To be authentic is to return to your natural state and allow your true self to be visible in all its vulnerability and all its radiance.
This is what it is to step into the freedom of being yourself. And it lives in the body, in the breath, in the willingness to remain visible.
Once you get a taste for authenticity, no one else compares.
This is a journey of self discovery that requires more presence to fulfil.
The loop that keeps it in place
There is a cycle that keeps the adapted self in charge. And once you see it, you begin to understand why the shift to presence can feel so difficult.
It works like this.
Busyness creates exhaustion. Exhaustion creates numbness. Numbness creates a sense of emptiness.
And the cycle persists as emptiness drives more busyness, because the mind believes that doing more will fill the gap.
And so the loop continues. Day after day. Week after week. The adapted self stays in the driver’s seat. The authentic self stays beneath the surface. And the feeling of something missing gets louder even as the schedule gets fuller.
The nervous system has been in activation for so long that stress has become the baseline. The body has long forgotten what ease feels like. And stillness, which is the very thing that would break the cycle, that feels unsafe.
Because stillness is where the performance drops. Stillness is where the real you becomes visible. And the adapted self has been built to prevent exactly that.
How consumption feeds the loop
And there is something else feeding this cycle. Something that fills every gap where presence might otherwise land.
Consumption.
The constant never ending digital stream. The notifications. The schedules. The opinions. The news. The content. The noise.
Consumption is the fuel that keeps the adapted self running. It keeps the mind so occupied that the authentic self remains buried beneath the surface.
Every moment of potential stillness gets filled with something.
A scroll. A message. A headline.
And this is the deeper understanding. Consumption is serving the same purpose as the busyness. It keeps you in the performance. It keeps you in the doing. It keeps the adapted self in charge by ensuring you are always consuming rather than feeling, always processing rather than being.
The adapted self and the culture of consumption are in partnership. One keeps you performing. The other keeps you distracted. And together, they ensure that the present moment, the only place where authenticity lives, remains just out of reach.
Why authenticity requires presence
Here we come to the crux of the matter of resistance itself.
Performance and presence occupy different worlds. They exist in opposition.
The performance belongs to the thinking mind. It runs on automatic. It pulls from the past, who you learned to be. It pulls from the future, who you think you need to be. It rehearses. It manages. It adjusts.
And all of it happens in thoughts, far away from the present moment.
Authenticity exists in only one place. Here. Now.
In the body. In the breath. In this very moment itself.
Because in the present moment, there is only you, who you truly are.
The expectations dissolve. The audience disappears. The performance drops.
The past releases its grip and the future has yet to arrive.
There is simply you. Present. Real. Unfiltered.
This is why presence and authenticity are inseparable. You can only be fully authentic when you are fully here.
And you can only be fully here when the mind has softened its grip of resistance, the body has arrived, and the breath has brought you home.
The performance belong to the past and the future. Wrapped up in the mind’s stories about who you need to be.
In the present moment, there is only who you are.
The breath as the way through
The breath is the mechanism that disrupts the entire system.
Because the moment you take a conscious breath and arrive in the body, the adapted self loses its grip entirely.
It only operates in the past and the future. In stories and projections. In plans and performances.
In the present moment, it dissolves.
The act of conscious breathing brings you home to the body. And the body is where authenticity lives.
One conscious breath. Draw the air in slowly through the nose. Feel it travel into the chest. Into the belly. Feel the ribcage expand. Feel the lungs fill. Feel the body open.
And then the exhale. A slow, long release through the mouth. A sigh. Carrying everything the adapted self has been holding. The performance. The protection. The grip.
You sigh it out. And the body softens. And the space where the adapted self was running its programs fills with something else.
Presence. Stillness. You.
One more breath. And the system begins to trust. That stillness can be safe. That being seen is okay. That the authentic you is more than enough.
You start to understand that what lives beneath the performance is the opposite of emptiness.
It is fullness. It is radiance. It is perfect.
This is authenticity and this is who you came here to embody.
This is the return to yourself.
An invitation for a guided practice to embody authenticity.
This is an invitation to pause and to meet the part of you that is present below the surface, the full expression of you, that has been protected from being seen.
Find a place where you can be still for a few minutes. A place where you can be undisturbed.
In this moment, all else can wait. There is no where to go, nothing else to do. Being here is your only focus right now.
Sit comfortably. Allow your body to settle. Make any adjustments you need to feel at ease.
Perhaps bring your shoulders up to your ears, hold them there, squeeze, and then release. Notice the spaciousness that arrives.
Perhaps let your head move slowly from side to side, then up and down. Slow circular movements. Feel the sensations that arrive with the movement.
Now bring your attention to your breath.
Notice it rolling in on the inhale. Notice it rolling out on the exhale.
Feel the air as it enters your body. Notice the temperature. The texture. The aliveness of the breath itself.
Stay here for a few cycles of natural breathing.
Breath rolling in on the inhale. Breath rolling out on the exhale.
Now take a slow deep conscious inhale through the nose. Fill up your belly with air. Feel your chest expand. The ribcage widen.
Feel the air within you,
And then consciously release with a slow long exhale through the mouth. Sigh it out. Let the sound carry the release.
Take another slow deep conscious inhale. Feel the chest expand. The ribcage widen.
And then feel the release again. Exhale. Sigh it out. Let it be audible.
Feel what happens as the body softens.
Now lets take a few moments to acknowledge the part of you that has been working so hard to keep you safe.
The adapted self. That version of you that learned to manage, perform, protect, and hold everything together.
And from this awareness, say to yourself: Thank you.
You have kept me safe. You have helped me navigate. And I am ready for more now.
Stay with this. Allow it land in the body.
Perhaps give your self a hug.
Repeat to yourself.
Thank you. You have kept me safe. You have helped me navigate.
Now I am ready to be my authentic self.
Feel what shifts as those words arrive in your body.
Now take another conscious breath. Slow. Deep. Inhale through the nose. Feel the body open.
Slow. Deep. Exhale through the mouth. Feel the release.
Continue with another round of slow deep conscious breathing.
Inhale through the nose. Fill up your belly with air. Let the ribcage expand. Feel the body open.
Release with a slow deep exhale through the mouth. Feel the breath leave the body.
You are here now in this present moment ready to invite your authenticity to step forward.
Now bring your attention inward to connect with the deepest expression of who you are now in this moment.
Allow your authenticity to rise to the surface.
And ask yourself: Who am I when the performance drops? Who is here when I stop managing and simply arrive?
Repeat.
Who am I when the performance drops? Who is here when I stop managing and simply arrive?
Stay with whatever surfaces.
Perhaps a feeling. A colour. A warmth. A stillness. Whatever is there, in your body, receive it.
This is you. The real you. The authentic you.
Come back to your breath.
Breathing in, say to yourself: “I am my authentic self.”
Breathing out, say to yourself: “I am ready to be seen.”
Stay with this mantra.
“I am my authentic self.”
“I am ready to be seen.”
Feel the truth of it landing in the body.
“I am my authentic self.”
“I am ready to be seen.”
This is the real you.
Present. Vulnerable. Radiant. The real self is the unique expression of who you are.
There can never be another one exactly like you.
You are here to be you, no one else.
Let that land in every cell of your body.
Breath it in
“I am my authentic self.”
Exhale it out
“I am ready to be seen.”
Feel the interconnectedness of everything around you.
You are part of everything. And everything is here, in this moment, with you now.
Stay here for as long as it feels right for you.
Breathing in and breathing out.
Connecting to your authentic self. The essence of you that is uniquely you in all its perfection.
When you are ready, bring your awareness slowly back.
Notice what has shifted within you.
What feels more spacious? What feels more settled? What feels more true?
Just know the adapted self will remain on standby, poised to return to its prime position. But now you know how to unlock the freedom to be yourself authentically.
The path to authenticity is inseparable from the path to presence.
And the path to presence begins with a single conscious breath.
You can come back to your authentic self every time you take a conscious breath.
This is the return to yourself.
