Thursday · 11 minDo This for 60 Seconds to Get Your Bowels Moving | Dr. Mandell
If you’re dealing with occasional constipation, bloating, straining, or that uncomfortable feeling that your bowels just aren’t completely emptying, this video shows a gentle abdominal massage technique that may help support natural bowel movement. I’ll show you how to follow the path of the large intestine—up the ascending colon, across the transverse colon, and down the descending colon—while explaining how peristalsis, the gastrocolic reflex, hydration, fiber, movement, breathing, and proper toilet positioning can all play a role in healthy bowel function. You’ll also learn why putting your feet on a small stool, keeping your knees above your hips, and avoiding excessive straining may make bowel movements easier. These techniques are intended for occasional constipation and general education; persistent or severe constipation, significant abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or a major change in bowel habits should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. ********************************* Please share this video with your friends and family. Thursday · 6 min1/2 Teaspoon Before Bed — Fall Asleep Faster, Sleep Deeper Tonight | Dr. Mandell
Many people struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up feeling truly refreshed. This simple nighttime drink combines warm milk with nutmeg to create a soothing bedtime ritual that may help your body relax and prepare for a more restful night. Nutmeg contains naturally occurring plant compounds and antioxidants, while milk provides tryptophan, an amino acid involved in the body's production of serotonin and melatonin—important pathways involved in normal sleep. Research on milk and dairy products suggests potential benefits for sleep, although results vary and the effects may be modest. INGREDIENTS: 1 cup whole milk, almond milk, or soy milk • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg • Optional pinch of cinnamon • Optional small drizzle of honey. HOW TO MAKE IT: Warm the milk until comfortably hot. Stir in ½ teaspoon of ground nutmeg and add a pinch of cinnamon if desired. Let it cool slightly, then add a little honey for sweetness if you like. Sip it slowly as part of your bedtime wind-down routine. The warmth, aroma, and relaxing nighttime ritual can help signal that it's time to settle down for sleep. Use only the recommended culinary amount of nutmeg—more is not better. RESEARCH: Studies have examined the relationship between dairy foods, tryptophan and sleep. A systematic review of milk and dairy products found some evidence of improvements in aspects of sleep, although findings varied between studies. Research also supports the biological role of tryptophan as a precursor involved in serotonin and melatonin pathways, and studies of tryptophan supplementation have reported improvements in certain measures of sleep. PubMed Research • Nutmeg contains active compounds such as myristicin and elemicin shown to support calming neurological effects and reduce nervous system overactivity. PubMed PMID: 22998540 • Nutmeg demonstrates strong anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help relax tissues and reduce stress pathways before sleep. PubMed PMID: 24811878 • Warm milk provides natural tryptophan which converts to serotonin and melatonin for improved sleep regulation. PubMed PMID: 32629884 • Cinnamon has been shown to support blood sugar regulation and digestive comfort which can help settle the body before bedtime. PubMed PMID: 34809305 • Honey supports gut soothing effects and may assist with improved sleep quality through natural carbohydrate mediated melatonin support. Thursday · 8 minNever Forget Someone’s Name Again — Do This When You Meet Them | Dr. Mandell
Have you ever met someone, heard their name clearly, and then seconds later realized it was completely gone? This happens to millions of people, and it doesn’t necessarily mean you have a bad memory. Names are unusually difficult for the brain to remember because, unlike a face, voice, object, or location, a name often has very little built-in meaning or visual information for the brain to grab onto. When you first hear a name, it enters working memory, where attention is limited and easily interrupted by everything else happening during a social interaction—making eye contact, thinking about what you’re going to say, listening to the other person, and being aware of how you are coming across. If that information isn’t properly encoded, the name may disappear before it ever becomes a stable memory. In this video, I explain how attention, working memory, the prefrontal cortex, and the hippocampus work together when you meet someone, and why stress, fatigue, poor sleep, distraction, and simply having too much going on at once can make remembering names even more difficult. More importantly, I’ll show you several simple ways to make a name more memorable the moment you hear it. Repeating the name once out loud can strengthen your attention to it. Connecting the name to a visual feature gives the brain another association to retrieve later. Adding a small physical movement, deliberately focusing your attention, and creating a meaningful association can provide additional cues for encoding and recall. Timing also matters—the first few seconds after hearing a name are important, so instead of trying desperately to remember it minutes later, give it your full attention immediately. Forgetting a newly introduced person’s name from time to time is common and is different from persistent or progressive memory problems involving familiar people, places, events, or everyday functioning. The goal is to work with the way your memory naturally operates: pay attention, create associations, repeat important information, and give your brain multiple ways to retrieve it later. Try these techniques the next time someone introduces themselves and see how much easier remembering their name can become. Please share this video with your friends and family, and most importantly, make it a day! Dr. Mandell ********************************* Please share this video with your friends and family. Thursday · 8 min7 Warning Signs in Your Legs You Should Never Ignore | Dr. Mandell
Your legs can reveal important clues about what may be happening throughout your body, and some warning signs should never be ignored. In this video, Dr. Mandell explains seven important changes to watch for, including calf pain or cramping while walking, sudden swelling in one leg, unusually cold feet, persistent numbness or tingling, sores that are slow to heal, changes in the color or appearance of your skin, and ongoing swelling in the ankles and lower legs. While these symptoms can have many different causes and do not necessarily mean something serious is wrong, they can sometimes be associated with circulation problems, peripheral artery disease, nerve problems, diabetes, blood clots, or other health conditions that deserve medical attention. Learning to recognize changes in your legs and feet can help you become more aware of what your body may be trying to tell you. Pay attention to recurring pain, swelling, temperature changes, numbness, skin changes, and wounds that aren't healing, and always seek appropriate medical care for symptoms that are sudden, severe, persistent, or unexplained. Please share this video with your family and friends because this information could help someone recognize an important warning sign and take action sooner. Stay proactive, listen to your body, and make your health a priority every day. ********************************* Please share this video with your friends and family. Thursday · 13 min7 Warning Signs in Your Hands You Should Never Ignore | Dr. Mandell
Your hands can reveal important clues about what may be happening inside your body. In this video, I break down seven warning signs in the hands that you should never ignore, including changes in color, swelling, numbness, tingling, weakness, nail changes, and other symptoms that may be connected to circulation, nerves, inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, or other health issues. The goal is not to scare you, but to help you recognize when your body may be trying to tell you something. Some hand symptoms are harmless and temporary, while others may deserve a closer look, especially if they are new, persistent, worsening, or happening with other symptoms. Pay attention to your body, know what is normal for you, and if something doesn’t seem right, have it evaluated. Early awareness can make a big difference when it comes to protecting your long-term health. ********************************* Please share this video with your friends and family. Thursday · 7 minHeal Neuropathy, Nerve Pain and Inflammation | Dr. Mandell
Burning feet, tingling hands, numbness, stabbing pain, and electric-shock sensations can be signs that your nerves are irritated, damaged, or struggling to function normally. In this video, I share 9 powerful ways to help support neuropathy, nerve pain, and inflammation by addressing factors that can affect the health of the nerve itself. You’ll learn how stabilizing blood sugar, reducing oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, supporting mitochondrial energy production, getting adequate magnesium and important B vitamins such as B1 and B12, and nutrients including alpha-lipoic acid, CoQ10, omega-3 fatty acids, and curcumin may support healthier nerve function. I’ll also explain why regular movement, quality sleep, breathing, and stress reduction can play an important role in calming overly sensitive nerves and supporting cellular repair. Your nerves require tremendous amounts of energy to maintain normal electrical signaling, and when mitochondrial function and ATP production are impaired, nerves may become more irritable and hyperexcitable. The goal is not simply to cover up burning and tingling, but to understand and address factors that may be contributing to unhealthy nerve function. Neuropathy has many possible causes, including diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, medications, chemotherapy, nerve compression, and other medical conditions, so persistent or worsening numbness, burning, tingling, weakness, or pain should always be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional. Always speak with your healthcare professional before starting supplements or making significant changes to your health regimen. Scientific References: Ziegler D, et al. Thursday · 10 minWhat You Do in the First 30 Minutes After Eating Can Change Your Body | Dr. Mandell
What you do right after eating can influence how your body handles that meal. In this video, I explain what happens during the first 30 minutes after you eat, including digestion, blood sugar, insulin, muscle activity, fullness, reflux, and why staying upright and moving gently can make a difference. You’ll learn why a short, comfortable walk after a meal may help your body use glucose more effectively, support digestion, reduce that heavy sluggish feeling, and help people who are prone to reflux avoid making symptoms worse. This is not about intense exercise or burning off your food. It’s about using a small window of time after eating in a smarter way. Try this after one of your larger meals for seven days and pay attention to how your body feels. ********************************* Please share this video with your friends and family. Thursday · 9 minThe Healing Power of Lemon — Fight Inflammation and Protect Your Body | Dr. Mandell
Discover the healing power of lemon and what this simple citrus fruit may be doing inside your body. Lemons provide vitamin C, citric acid, flavonoids, limonoids, and other powerful plant compounds that have been studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In this video, Dr. Alan Mandell explains how lemon water can support hydration, digestion, healthy circulation, immune function, collagen production, and your body's natural defenses against oxidative stress. You'll also discover why citrate from lemon is especially interesting for kidney health and calcium stone prevention, how citrus compounds may influence inflammatory pathways, and why replacing sugary drinks with refreshing lemon water can be a simple addition to a healthier lifestyle. Lemon is not a cure for disease, but research continues to uncover fascinating ways its nutrients and bioactive compounds may support the body's normal protective and metabolic processes. Make this valuable information part of your healthy lifestyle and please share it with your friends and family. PubMed Research: “Can Lemon Juice Be an Alternative to Potassium Citrate in the Treatment of Urinary Calcium Stones in Patients With Hypocitraturia?” — A randomized clinical study found that fresh lemon juice significantly increased urinary citrate, an important factor in reducing calcium stone formation. “Features, Pharmacological Chemistry, Molecular Mechanism and Health Benefits of Lemon” — A scientific review of Citrus limon discusses its bioactive compounds and reported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, metabolic and organ-protective properties, while noting that evidence varies by outcome and study type. “Citrus limon (Lemon) Phenomenon” — This review describes lemon's flavonoids, phenolic compounds and other bioactive constituents and summarizes research into antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. “Effects of Citrus Fruit Juices and Their Bioactive Components on Inflammation and Immunity” — This PubMed-indexed review describes how vitamin C and citrus polyphenols interact with oxidative stress, inflammatory pathways and immune function; much of the human juice evidence reviewed was from orange juice rather than lemon specifically. “Limonoids With Anti-Inflammatory Activity: A Review” — Research examining limonoids found in citrus and related plants describes anti-inflammatory activity involving inflammatory mediators and cytokine pathways, primarily from experimental studies. **************************************** Please share this video with your friends and family.
