The Vitamin That Keeps Your Arteries Strong, Flexible and Healthy | Dr. Mandell

Vitamin C does much more than support your immune system. It plays an important role in the health of your blood vessels, helping protect against oxidative stress, supporting collagen production, and helping preserve the normal function of the endothelium—the delicate inner lining of your arteries. Research has shown that vitamin C can influence nitric oxide availability and endothelial function, both of which are important for healthy blood flow and vascular flexibility. Your arteries depend on strong connective tissue and healthy endothelial cells. Vitamin C is an essential cofactor for collagen production, which helps maintain the structure and integrity of blood vessels. When vitamin C intake becomes inadequate, collagen formation is impaired and oxidative stress may increase. In this video, I explain the fascinating relationship between vitamin C, oxidative stress, lipoproteins, circulation, and arterial health. I also discuss why humans must obtain vitamin C from the diet, the importance of fruits and vegetables, and some of the best natural sources including citrus fruits, berries, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, and leafy green vegetables. Research on vitamin C and cardiovascular health continues to evolve. Studies suggest that vitamin C supplementation can improve endothelial function in certain populations, particularly people with cardiovascular risk factors, although vitamin C supplements have not been proven to prevent heart attacks or reverse atherosclerosis. The message is simple: maintaining an adequate intake of vitamin C is one important part of an overall heart-healthy lifestyle that also includes a nutritious diet, regular physical activity, healthy blood pressure, appropriate cholesterol management, good sleep, and avoiding smoking. Make it a great day. Dr. Alan Mandell ⭐ PUBMED RESEARCH PubMed ID: 24792921 A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that vitamin C supplementation improved endothelial function, with greater effects seen in people at higher cardiovascular risk. PubMed ID: 23581713 This review describes several important actions of vitamin C within the vascular endothelium, including supporting collagen formation, scavenging reactive species, and helping preserve nitric oxide involved in the regulation of blood flow. PubMed ID: 27529239 A review of vitamin C and heart health reported associations with endothelial function, arterial stiffness, lipid metabolism, and oxidative processes, while noting that cardiovascular outcome studies have produced mixed results. PubMed ID: 3008449 Vitamin C is an essential cofactor for enzymes required for normal collagen biosynthesis, helping explain its critical role in maintaining connective tissue and blood vessel integrity. PubMed ID: 23747864 A broad review of vitamin C research describes its essential role in collagen synthesis and antioxidant activity and discusses its potential involvement in cardiovascular health. PubMed ID: 18582947 This review examines vitamin C’s potential influence on inflammatory and oxidative processes occurring within endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and macrophages during the development of atherosclerosis. This Popular Drink Could Be Clogging Your Arteries | Dr. Mandell

This popular drink may seem harmless—or even healthy—but when it’s loaded with added sugar, drinking it day after day can contribute to metabolic changes that affect your heart and arteries. In this video, I explain what can happen inside your body when you regularly consume sugar-sweetened tea and other sugary beverages, including how excess sugar can affect insulin, triglycerides, inflammation, body fat, cholesterol, and the delicate lining of your blood vessels. We’ll discuss why liquid sugar can be so easy to overconsume, why a drink labeled “tea,” “natural,” or even “organic” isn’t automatically healthy, and why reading the added-sugars line on the nutrition label is so important. You’ll also learn how years of repeated metabolic stress can contribute to the conditions that promote plaque formation within the arteries, even when you feel perfectly healthy and have no obvious symptoms. Most importantly, I’ll show you simple ways to continue enjoying tea without loading your body with unnecessary sugar, including gradually reducing sweetness, mixing sweetened and unsweetened tea, and using natural flavors such as lemon, lime, mint, or cinnamon. Heart disease doesn’t develop because of one drink or one meal—it develops from patterns repeated over time. Becoming aware of what you drink every day may be one of the simplest changes you can make to support healthier arteries, better metabolism, and a stronger cardiovascular system for years to come. ********************************* Please share this video with your friends and family. The Worst Time to Brush Your Teeth | Dr. Mandell

Most people brush their teeth every day without giving a second thought to when they should brush. But did you know that brushing immediately after eating certain acidic foods and beverages may actually do more harm than good? In this video, I explain why timing matters, how acidic foods can temporarily soften tooth enamel, and why your body's own saliva plays such an important role in protecting and remineralizing your teeth. We'll discuss which foods and drinks are the biggest culprits, what you should do immediately after eating them, and why waiting about 30 minutes before brushing may help protect your enamel for years to come. This isn't about brushing less—it's about brushing smarter. Understanding how your body naturally protects itself allows you to make better health decisions every day. Small habits practiced consistently over time often make the biggest difference in your long-term health. ********************************* Please share this video with your friends and family. Do This Against a Wall to Flatten Your Stomach — No Crunches | Dr. Mandell

Most people think flattening the stomach means doing endless crunches and sit-ups, but one of the most important muscles for pulling the abdominal wall inward sits much deeper. The transverse abdominis wraps around your midsection like a natural corset and plays an important role in abdominal control, posture, core stability, and support of the spine. In this video, I’ll show you several simple standing exercises using only a wall to help activate and strengthen these deep core muscles — including the abdominal drawing-in maneuver, wall pelvic tilts, mini squats, and controlled wall pushes. Research has shown that drawing the abdomen inward can effectively recruit the transverse abdominis and that this muscle contributes to trunk and spinal stabilization. The beauty of these movements is that there’s no equipment, no crunching your neck, and no getting down on the floor. Practice them consistently and you may notice better awareness and control of your abdominal wall, improved core endurance, and better posture. Remember, these exercises strengthen and retrain the abdominal muscles; reducing abdominal fat still depends on overall nutrition, activity, and energy balance. Start slowly, focus on your breathing and technique, and let your deep core do the work. Research: Akuthota V, et al. Core Stability Exercise Principles. Curr Sports Med Rep. 2008;7(1):39–44. Do This for 60 Seconds to Get Your Bowels Moving | Dr. Mandell

If you’re dealing with occasional constipation, bloating, straining, or that uncomfortable feeling that your bowels just aren’t completely emptying, this video shows a gentle abdominal massage technique that may help support natural bowel movement. I’ll show you how to follow the path of the large intestine—up the ascending colon, across the transverse colon, and down the descending colon—while explaining how peristalsis, the gastrocolic reflex, hydration, fiber, movement, breathing, and proper toilet positioning can all play a role in healthy bowel function. You’ll also learn why putting your feet on a small stool, keeping your knees above your hips, and avoiding excessive straining may make bowel movements easier. These techniques are intended for occasional constipation and general education; persistent or severe constipation, significant abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or a major change in bowel habits should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. ********************************* Please share this video with your friends and family. 1/2 Teaspoon Before Bed — Fall Asleep Faster, Sleep Deeper Tonight | Dr. Mandell

Many people struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up feeling truly refreshed. This simple nighttime drink combines warm milk with nutmeg to create a soothing bedtime ritual that may help your body relax and prepare for a more restful night. Nutmeg contains naturally occurring plant compounds and antioxidants, while milk provides tryptophan, an amino acid involved in the body's production of serotonin and melatonin—important pathways involved in normal sleep. Research on milk and dairy products suggests potential benefits for sleep, although results vary and the effects may be modest. INGREDIENTS: 1 cup whole milk, almond milk, or soy milk • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg • Optional pinch of cinnamon • Optional small drizzle of honey. HOW TO MAKE IT: Warm the milk until comfortably hot. Stir in ½ teaspoon of ground nutmeg and add a pinch of cinnamon if desired. Let it cool slightly, then add a little honey for sweetness if you like. Sip it slowly as part of your bedtime wind-down routine. The warmth, aroma, and relaxing nighttime ritual can help signal that it's time to settle down for sleep. Use only the recommended culinary amount of nutmeg—more is not better. RESEARCH: Studies have examined the relationship between dairy foods, tryptophan and sleep. A systematic review of milk and dairy products found some evidence of improvements in aspects of sleep, although findings varied between studies. Research also supports the biological role of tryptophan as a precursor involved in serotonin and melatonin pathways, and studies of tryptophan supplementation have reported improvements in certain measures of sleep. PubMed Research • Nutmeg contains active compounds such as myristicin and elemicin shown to support calming neurological effects and reduce nervous system overactivity. PubMed PMID: 22998540 • Nutmeg demonstrates strong anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help relax tissues and reduce stress pathways before sleep. PubMed PMID: 24811878 • Warm milk provides natural tryptophan which converts to serotonin and melatonin for improved sleep regulation. PubMed PMID: 32629884 • Cinnamon has been shown to support blood sugar regulation and digestive comfort which can help settle the body before bedtime. PubMed PMID: 34809305 • Honey supports gut soothing effects and may assist with improved sleep quality through natural carbohydrate mediated melatonin support. Never Forget Someone’s Name Again — Do This When You Meet Them | Dr. Mandell

Have you ever met someone, heard their name clearly, and then seconds later realized it was completely gone? This happens to millions of people, and it doesn’t necessarily mean you have a bad memory. Names are unusually difficult for the brain to remember because, unlike a face, voice, object, or location, a name often has very little built-in meaning or visual information for the brain to grab onto. When you first hear a name, it enters working memory, where attention is limited and easily interrupted by everything else happening during a social interaction—making eye contact, thinking about what you’re going to say, listening to the other person, and being aware of how you are coming across. If that information isn’t properly encoded, the name may disappear before it ever becomes a stable memory. In this video, I explain how attention, working memory, the prefrontal cortex, and the hippocampus work together when you meet someone, and why stress, fatigue, poor sleep, distraction, and simply having too much going on at once can make remembering names even more difficult. More importantly, I’ll show you several simple ways to make a name more memorable the moment you hear it. Repeating the name once out loud can strengthen your attention to it. Connecting the name to a visual feature gives the brain another association to retrieve later. Adding a small physical movement, deliberately focusing your attention, and creating a meaningful association can provide additional cues for encoding and recall. Timing also matters—the first few seconds after hearing a name are important, so instead of trying desperately to remember it minutes later, give it your full attention immediately. Forgetting a newly introduced person’s name from time to time is common and is different from persistent or progressive memory problems involving familiar people, places, events, or everyday functioning. The goal is to work with the way your memory naturally operates: pay attention, create associations, repeat important information, and give your brain multiple ways to retrieve it later. Try these techniques the next time someone introduces themselves and see how much easier remembering their name can become. Please share this video with your friends and family, and most importantly, make it a day! Dr. Mandell ********************************* Please share this video with your friends and family.
