September arrives like a long, slow exhale. The sun sets a little earlier. The evenings begin to cool. The fullness of summer gives way to something quieter, and all of creation seems to shift into a different gear. It is the kind of seasonal turning that invites reflection, not just about the months behind us but about where our roots have been planted and how deep they actually go.
Ephesians 3:17 describes something worth pausing over. Christ dwelling in our hearts through faith, and from that indwelling, being rooted and grounded in love. The roots come from Him living within us, not from our own effort to hold ourselves together. And when the roots are there, drawing from that source, something remarkable happens. The seasons change, the heat comes, the drought arrives, and the leaves stay green. The fruit does not stop.
Jesus walked through seasons that ranged from breathtaking to unimaginable, and through all of them He maintained a posture of surrender and peace, trusting that the Father would accomplish what He intended. That same posture is available to us as we step into the second half of the year, roots planted in His rich soil, hearts surrendered to His purposes, and eyes set not on the world's standards but on the pleasure of the One who sustains us through every season that comes.
The God who has walked with us this far will keep walking. Let that be enough to rest tonight.
Ponder Tonight
The roots described in Ephesians 3:17 are not something we grow through striving. They come from Christ dwelling in us, which means the depth of our rootedness is tied directly to the depth of our relationship with Him.
Seasons of change and transition are not interruptions to the life of faith. They are part of it, designed with us in mind, inviting a deeper dependence on the One whose faithfulness holds through every variation of weather and circumstance.
A tree rooted by water is not anxious in drought because the anxiety would be rooted in a misunderstanding of where the water comes from. Our stability comes from the same source, and it does not dry up with the changing season.
Entering a new season with hearts fully surrendered to God rather than hearts trying to meet the world's standards is one of the most countercultural and freeing postures available to a believer.

Your Evening Prayer
Father,
Thank You for the gift of Your rich soil. It is by Your grace that You have allowed us to plant our roots in Your solid ground. From Your soil comes stability and depth, a richness and wholeness we cannot have apart from You.
Help us look to You for strength and direction when things feel out of control, or when we feel the pressure from the world to do more than You have asked of us. Remind us that You have equipped us for every good work, and that sometimes that work is simply to rest where You have placed us.
Keep us humble and patient as we look only to You and Your Word for guidance. We pray for clarity and boldness in this season, and for roots that go deeper than anything this season can touch.
