Christian Parent, Crazy World - How Can a Good God Allow Evil & Suffering? (w/ Dr. Douglas Groothuis) - Archive Ep. 66

How Can a Good God Allow So Much Evil and Suffering? Wrestling with the Toughest Question in Faith For many parents—and for the next generation—one question stands above the rest as the #1 barrier to Christian belief: If God is good and all-powerful, why does He allow evil and suffering in the world? This episode of Christian Parent/Crazy World dives bravely into that profound dilemma, equipping parents to address their children’s toughest doubts and their own deepest struggles. Join host Catherine as she sits down with Dr. Douglas Groothuis, one of the most respected minds in Christian apologetics. Dr. Groothuis is Distinguished University Research Professor of Apologetics and Christian Worldview at Cornerstone University, and the author of over 20 books, including the acclaimed Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for Biblical Faith. Beyond his accolades, listeners will be moved by Dr. Groothuis’s personal journey through heartbreak and grief, offering a unique blend of intellectual rigor and heartfelt empathy. What You’ll Discover in This Episode: Why Every Worldview Faces the Problem of Evil Dr. Groothuis breaks down why not just Christianity, but every philosophy—atheism, pantheism, secularism—must wrestle with the existence of evil. Discover how Christianity uniquely anchors the concepts of good and evil. A Personal Journey Through Suffering In a moving account, Dr. Groothuis shares how the loss of his brilliant wife Rebecca to dementia challenged—and deepened—his faith, giving listeners a firsthand look at trusting God in the depths of pain 16:55. The “Greater Good” and Soul-Making Explore the idea that God can use pain, loss, and evil for a greater good—one we may not fully see from our limited vantage. As Dr. Groothuis says, “I can trust the God who I know for the things I can’t understand” 16:49. Lament: Biblical Permission to Grieve with God The conversation tackles the Biblical tradition of lament—bringing our confusion, anger, and sorrow honestly to God. Dr. Groothuis points to the Psalms and the disciples’ struggles, reminding us that doubt and pain are not signs of weak faith, but invitations to deeper trust 31:19. Answering Teens’ Toughest Questions From why God couldn’t create a world with free will and no evil, to whether evil actually exists, the episode tackles real questions from young people with honesty, logic, and compassion. Heaven: The True Hope for Suffering Believers Dr. Groothuis illuminates the ultimate Christian hope—a new heavens and new earth where suffering is redeemed, not forgotten, and God’s presence is our deepest joy 54:56. Notable Moments & Quotes: “I can trust the God who I know is there for the things that I can’t understand.” — Dr. Groothuis “Every worldview has a problem with evil—it’s not just Christianity.” — Dr. Groothuis “Jesus is the only one who has the words of life.” — Catherine 01:02:51 “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain.” — CS Lewis, quoted by Catherine 44:37 “Where else are we going to go? Nothing else will satisfy.” — Catherine reflecting on Peter’s words 35:06 Why This Matters: For Christian parents, the challenge of suffering is not just an abstract question—it strikes at the heart of faith formation in our families. This episode arms parents with both deeply reasoned answers and encouragement to walk alongside their children in seasons of doubt, suffering, or loss. Modern Application: No home is untouche

Breathe: The Stress Less Podcast - The Science of Gratitude: The “Story Twist” That Can Lift Your Mood & Reframe Your Day #229

Have you ever made a gratitude list—but still felt stressed afterward? Gratitude is powerful for our emotional wellness—but what if there’s a simple way to experience it more deeply? In today’s episode of Breathe, Bonnie explores the science of gratitude and a simple “story twist” that can help lift your mood, calm stress, and help you notice God’s goodness in a more personal way. Instead of only naming what you’re grateful for, you’ll learn how vividly remembering the story around your gratitude helps reframes your day and boosts your mood with thanksgiving to God. Bonnie also shares a personal story from her recent trip to North Carolina, where an unexpected encounter reminded them that gratitude is not just about good things, but the giver God was present in their stories. In this episode, you’ll learn: - Why our brains naturally pay more attention to stress and negative experiences—a tendency psychologists call negativity bias - How gratitude can help redirect our attention toward something good that is also true - What research on positive autobiographical memories tells us about why vividly remembering a positive experience can lift our mood - Why savoring the story behind your gratitude may help you experience the positive emotions of that moment again - How to bring your gratitude story into prayer and notice where God met you personally - A simple Gratitude Story Twist you can practice when stress starts telling the story of your day Scripture “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!” — Psalm 118:1 “You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God… overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.” — 2 Corinthians 9:11–12 Breath Prayer Inhale: I give thanks to You, Lord… Exhale: Your steadfast love endures forever. The Crosswalk Devotional: A Daily Devotional Chris... - Find Hidden Treasures from God

Where can you find God’s blessings when life feels ordinary, frustrating, or even painful? God’s goodness is often present in ways we overlook—the breath in our lungs, daily provision, protection, meaningful relationships, and quiet moments of peace. Like hidden treasures beneath layers of rock, these blessings become easier to recognize when we slow down and intentionally look for them. Job 28:10 reminds us that treasures can be discovered when we are willing to search for them. The same can be true of our relationship with God. Even during difficult seasons, He can be developing spiritual treasures such as patience, kindness, perseverance, and deeper faith. Most importantly, God’s presence is with us in the darkness. When we learn to look beyond our circumstances and seek God’s work in our everyday lives, we can begin to notice the countless ways He is supporting, protecting, and loving us. Highlights How to recognize God’s hidden blessings in everyday life Why slowing down can help us notice God’s goodness and provision What Job 28:10 teaches us about searching for hidden treasures How difficult seasons can produce spiritual treasures like patience and kindness Why God’s presence is the greatest treasure we can discover in times of suffering Practical ways to train yourself to notice God’s work instead of focusing only on problems Questions to help you recognize the people, promises, and blessings God has already placed in your life Want more encouragement throughout your week? Full Transcript Below: Find Hidden Treasures from God By: Whitney Hopler Bible Reading: “They tunnel through the rock; their eyes see all its treasures.” – Job 28:10, NIV On a trip to Norway, I went through so many tunnels while traveling in cars and trains that I completely lost count. As I traveled through the tunnels, I thought about the incredible engineering required to blast through all that hard rock. I also thought about all the natural treasures that are hidden deep inside rocks. More than 4,000 different kinds of beautiful minerals and gemstones can be buried in rocks all around our planet. When people tunnel through rock, they may discover quartz, garnet, amethyst, and many more varieties of treasures. Job 28:10 points out that tunneling through rock reveals treasures. It’s necessary to make an effort to find treasures. But treasures are there, waiting to be discovered, when we’re willing to do the work of trying to find them. God is constantly pouring blessings into your life, and every single one of those blessings is a treasure. But some of them may be hidden until you make an effort to search for them. If you explore and ask God to help you find the treasures

Unhurried Living | Helping Christians Rest Deeper ... - The Spacious Life God Intended

What if the Old Testament law was more spacious than we imagine? In this episode, Alan Fadling explores a surprising question: How much time did God set aside in Israel’s calendar for worship, rest, celebration, and remembrance? Weekly Sabbaths. Annual festivals. New Moon observances. A sabbatical year for the land. Jubilee. Taken together, these rhythms reveal a God who was not forming a people around relentless productivity, but around worship, trust, gratitude, and enoughness. Alan reflects on Israel’s struggle to receive this gift, our own modern “burnout economy,” and the striking connection between Sabbath and freedom from slavery. Perhaps rest is not merely recovery from working too much. Perhaps it is part of the spacious life God intended for us. In this episode: The surprising amount of rest built into Israel’s calendar Why Israel struggled to practice the sabbatical year and Jubilee What Sabbath has to do with freedom from slavery Why our burnout economy makes these ancient rhythms newly relevant How rest becomes an apprenticeship in trusting God What these rhythms might mean for the way we live and lead today “Slaves don’t get Sabbaths. Free people do.” Connect with Alan on LinkedIn or learn more about Unhurried Living programs on their website. Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer for the Days You Want to Give Up

Nobody explains that the days before a funeral are full. Phone calls, decisions, forms, food, people in the kitchen, a program to approve, flowers to choose. Grief has a to-do list, and you work it because the working is what holds you upright. And then it is over. The casseroles go into the freezer, the cards pile up on the counter, everyone returns to their own lives — and for the first time, there is nothing left to do. And you realize that life has changed and will not change back. Not even for a season. Second Chronicles 20 tells the story of Jehoshaphat facing three armies. He is afraid, he says so out loud, and then he prays one of the most honest prayers in Scripture: we do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You. The word that comes back is one everyone knows: the battle is not yours, but God's. But keep reading. Two verses later, God tells them what to do next — take up your positions, stand firm, and see the deliverance the Lord will give you. They already knew the outcome was settled. God had said so. But they still had to get dressed, get in line, and walk out into the desert to stand there. The battle was God's, but the showing up was theirs. That is what this episode carries for the person who wants to give up today. God is not asking you to win. He is not asking you to fix what happened. He is asking you to take your position — even if that position is just the laundry. Even if it is just Monday, then Tuesday, then Wednesday. The standing means something. The showing up is worth something. You can grow stronger in His strength, one small act of obedience at a time. If you're still praying and starting to wonder if it's working, I wrote Praying Through Life's Battles: 90 Days to Strengthen Your Faith for you. You can preorder it now at battleprayers.com. Until next time, remember, God sees you, hears you, and He knows your needs. Bible Verse "Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's." — 2 Chronicles 20:15, NIV Ponder Today The battle is God's — but the showing up is yours. Judah was told the outcome was already settled, and then they were told to get up, get in line, and walk out into the desert anyway. Taking your position matters, even when the result is not in your hands. God is not asking you to fix it. Some things cannot be fixed, and no amount of effort will change them. God does not measure your faithfulness by whether things are getting better. He asks you to stand, not to win. The smallest act of obedience is still obedience. Laundry that does not care what you have been through, groceries that still need to be bought, floors that still need to be cleaned — these small, meaningless-feeling acts of staying upright are the position God is asking you to hold today. Things may not get easier, but you can grow stronger. Life remained hard for a long time after the hardest loss. But there is a difference between circumstances improving and the person inside them growing. His strength builds in the daily showing up. As long as you are breathing, your life has meaning. Getting up is not a triumph. It is Monday, then Tuesday, then Wednesday. But there are people who need you to be there when they come home. That is enough reason to stay on your feet. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, I want to stop. You know that. I have been holding this together, and I am not sure why anymore. Today, the thought of doing one more day of it feels like more than I have. I confess I have been trying to fix something You never asked me to fix and measur

Dwell On These Things - “Eli’s Sons Reject God and God Calls Samuel” - 1 Samuel 2:12-3:21

The opening chapters of 1 Samuel present two very different responses to God. Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, served as priests but treated God’s commands with contempt. Samuel was still a boy, but he learned to listen when God spoke. One group possessed religious authority without knowing God, while Samuel came to know God through His revealed word. . Your Nightly Scripture - Remembering That God Sees My Heart and Longing (1 Samuel)

Evening Scripture 1 Samuel, Chapter 16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.” Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?” Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah. Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him. Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.” So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.” One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with him.” Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul. David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.” Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him. Evening Reflection If you are like many people, you have hopes, dreams, and desires living inside of you. These are things you would love to see happen in your life. Yet, as life progresses, it may seem as if the things you desire may never come to pass. Whether or not it does is God’s decision, but this chapter reminds us of the way God can change

Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - God’s Nearness in Darker Evenings

For those who struggle with seasonal depression, Isaiah 60:19 holds a promise that reaches all the way to eternity and back into tonight. A time is coming when God Himself will be the everlasting light, when darkness will cease to exist entirely, when even the sun will be unnecessary because Christ has walked into the room. That is not a metaphor. It is the destination of every person who belongs to Him. And even now, before that day, we carry a glimpse of that light within us through the presence of the Holy Spirit. We are not dependent on favorable circumstances or the right season or enough hours of daylight to have access to His presence. He has come into the world as light, Jesus said, so that no one who believes in Him should stay in darkness. That does not make seasonal depression disappear or the heavy evenings feel light overnight. But it does mean that even in the dim seasons, even when everything feels dark and heavy, we are not left without light. We are not navigating this alone. And the darkness, however real it feels tonight, does not have the final word. He is with you in this. Even here. Ponder Tonight Seasonal heaviness and the emotional weight of darker months are genuine experiences that deserve acknowledgment rather than dismissal. God meets us in those specific and real struggles, not only in our spiritual darkness. The promise of Isaiah 60:19 is not only a future comfort. It reframes the present by reminding us that our light source is not the sun or our circumstances but God Himself, who is constant and everlasting regardless of the season. Jesus came into the world as light specifically so that those who believe in Him would not have to remain in darkness. That promise is active and present, not only future. Looking back at moments when God's light pierced through a dark season before is one of the most grounding practices available to us when the darkness feels thick. That evidence is worth returning to. Tonight's Scripture "The LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory." — Isaiah 60:19, NIV "I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." — John 12:46, NIV Your Evening Prayer Lord Jesus, Right now we are feeling dark and heavy. As the seasons change, the sadness and weariness press in. Tonight, please be our light. We invite Your presence into the darkness and ask You to be our guide. We release our fear, anxiety, and loneliness to You, trusting that You are with us even here. Remind us that we are never without Your light, even in the dimmest seasons. And help us rest in Your presence tonight, knowing that the darkness does not have the final word. We love You, Jesus. Amen. Want More? The Crosswalk Devotional: A Daily Devotional Chris... - Surprising Ways Pride Shows Itself

Pride doesn’t always look like arrogance or boasting. Sometimes it shows up in quieter ways—talking more than listening, only investing in people who seem useful, or constantly saying there isn’t enough time for others. These subtle forms of pride can reveal that our attention is more focused on ourselves than on loving and serving the people around us. Philippians 2:3-4 calls Christians to replace selfish ambition with humility by considering others and their interests. Following Jesus means examining not only what we do, but also why we do it. When we become more willing to listen, make time for others, and engage with people without expecting something in return, we begin to reflect the humility of Christ. Recognizing subtle pride isn’t about condemning ourselves—it’s about allowing God to reshape our priorities, relationships, and hearts. Highlights How pride can appear in subtle ways we may not immediately recognize Why only engaging with people who are useful can reveal selfishness What listening more and speaking less can teach us about humility Why “I don’t have time” may actually reveal our priorities How Philippians 2:3-4 challenges us to consider others more important than ourselves Why honest self-examination is essential for recognizing pride in our lives Practical ways to replace selfishness and conceit with humility, generosity, and genuine care for others Want more encouragement throughout your week? Full Transcript Below: Surprising Ways Pride Shows Itself By Aaron D’Anthony Brown Bible Reading: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4, CSB) In his epistle to the church of Phillipi, Paul urges fellow believers to be “united in spirit” with one another (Philippians 2:2). He wanted everyone to be on the same page with what they believed and how they lived as Christ followers. He goes on to say that such a life is lived by esteeming others as more important than ourselves. Don’t look to what brings you the most glory; do what benefits others. We hear the same sentiment preached in church today, but how many of us live this out? While our pastors talk about loving our neighbors, building the church up from within, and sharing the Gospel with nonbelievers, we don’t often seem to be on the same accord. Even if we do these things, our motivations are sometimes selfish. We should be prioritizing others, but really, we’re interested in ourselves. I’ve heard believers say things like “I enjoy hearing myself talk,” or claim they don’t have time to hang out with other

Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer for Confidence That God’s Help Will Come Through

Psalm 28:7 arrived as a gift during a quiet morning devotional time, hours before that exact conversation had to happen: the Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. It is one of Scripture's most direct and personal declarations: not that God might help, or that help is available under certain conditions, but that He helps. Present tense. Reliable. Already present before the hard moment begins. It is the confidence that God will be with us and will go before us in every heavy moment, every difficult conversation, and every season that looks too hard to carry. Today's Bible Verse "The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me." — Psalm 28:7, NIV Ponder Today God's help is always there, even when you cannot see, sense, or fathom it. The truth of Psalm 28:7 does not depend on whether we feel it in the moment. His strength and help are present before we arrive at the hard thing, and they remain after we come through it. We cannot do the hard things without God — and we do not have to. That is not a statement of inadequacy. It is a declaration of freedom. We were never designed to carry the impossible on our own, and He never asked us to. God knows the exact words every receiving heart needs to hear. When we do not know what to say, when we feel unqualified and unprepared for a hard conversation or task, we can trust that He will speak through our weakness in ways we could not have arranged on our own. Confidence in God is built in the hours before the hard moment, not only in the moment itself. Praying through the approach, pouring over His promises, reaffirming trust in His faithfulness — these are what prepare us to walk forward when our knees are weak. God is your strength, your shield, and your help — always. Not sometimes, not conditionally, not only when the circumstances are manageable. Always. Let that word settle into whatever hard thing is on the horizon for you today. A Prayer for You Today Lord God, I need Your help. Every day I face big and small things, but there is not one thing I do without You. And thank You, Lord, that I do not have to. Please help me remember this when I forget. When I feel overwhelmed by what is before me, when I want to run, or when I cannot see a way through, remind me that You are my strength, my shield, and my help. You are with me and within me, closer than a call or cry away, always. Increase my confidence in the truth of Your sovereign care, so that I may point others to You and Your help as well. I praise You for Your constant presence. In Jesus' name, Amen. Want More? Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - God Directs Our Paths: A Conversation with Franklin Graham | Bonus |

A special episode from "On The Ground" with Samaritan's Purse As believers, we trust in God—we don’t trust in ourselves or in our own understanding. Franklin Graham joins his daughter-in-law in the studio this week to share updates from across the ministry and how he stays grounded leading Samaritan’s Purse. In a world where it is easy to get bogged down by trials and uncertainty, we are to focus on what is eternal, depending fully on the Lord for strength and direction. In this week’s episode, Franklin Graham shares where Samaritan’s Purse is currently serving around the world—from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Venezuela and Alaska. The focus of Samaritan’s Purse has always been—and will always be—sharing the Gospel with all people. “If we lose sight of our purpose, you get discouraged. And what I mean by purpose is tohelp people, but to do it in Jesus' Name. We want people to know about God's Son, Jesus Christ. So that's our focus, and if one person gets saved, if we're able to help one family, if we can help one group of people, then it's worth it.” – Franklin Graham In reflecting on how Samaritan’s Purse has grown over the past several decades, Graham is continually in awe of God. Graham relies on the Lord for wisdom and discernment—not in his own strength. Kristy asks her father-in-law how he has remained grounded, and he points to familiar verses in Proverbs. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV Graham talks about the incredible people God has brought to the ministry over the years. As a leader, Graham prays that staff never lose the heart behind the mission and that the Lord would bring in a new generation of men and women that can receive the baton. It is important to pray for our political leaders, whether we voted for them or not. Graham implores listeners to put allegiances to political parties aside and choose to pray for these leaders. “We're commanded by God to pray for those that are leadership. It doesn't matter whether you're a Republican or Democrat, you pray.” – Franklin Graham If you’d like to keep up to date with more stories from On the Ground, please visitSamaritansPurse.org. Timeless Wisdom with Dennis Prager - The Burning Bush | Weekend Torah Teaching

In this Weekend Torah Teaching, Dennis Prager continues his study of Moses and the burning bush, exploring what makes Moses such a remarkable choice to lead the Jewish people out of Egypt. When God calls Moses to confront Pharaoh, Moses does not respond with confidence or ambition. Instead, he asks, “Who am I?” Dennis explains why Moses's reluctance and humility are among the very qualities that make him worthy of leadership. Dennis then examines Moses's second question: “Who are You?” Why does Moses need to know God's name? Dennis explores the profound meaning behind God's answer, “I am what I am,” and what it reveals about the nature of God and humanity's ability to understand Him. But Dennis believes there is an even deeper lesson hidden in God's response to Moses. How can Moses know that God is truly with him? Dennis argues that, just as Moses would only know God's hand was guiding him after successfully completing his mission, we often recognize God's role in our own lives only in retrospect. What does Moses's story teach us about faith, doubt, and recognizing God's presence in our lives?
