Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer to Seek Out the Lord
When life becomes most difficult, the instinct for many of us is to turn away from God rather than toward Him. We tell ourselves we can handle it, or we feel too far from Him to reach out, or the distance that has grown between us and Him feels too wide to cross. But Psalm 34:4 is the testimony of someone who crossed exactly that distance and found that God was already there: I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. Living with a health crisis and an undiagnosed autoimmune illness that only grew harder to bear — feeling closer to death than ever before, watching others live seemingly full and healthy lives, growing further from God with every passing week — until one dark night when the only thing left to do was talk to Him honestly. Pouring out the fears, the terror about what a future with a chronic illness would look like, the grief over a life that would never be what was expected. And in that vulnerable, unpolished prayer, something shifted. Seeking God out is not always dramatic. Sometimes it is a single prayer on a hard night that begins the return. David wrote Psalm 34 while pretending to be insane before a foreign king, afraid for his life — and still found solace in the Lord. That same God is not far from any of us. He can be sought through Scripture, prayer, worship, a devotional, a sermon, a conversation with a spiritual mentor. Seek Him with your whole heart today, and you will find Him. Bible Verse “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” — Psalm 34:4, NIV Ponder Today Turning away from God in hard seasons is common — returning to Him is what matters. Joel 2:13 calls us back, and God is always ready to receive us when we come. What matters is not how long we have been away but that we come back. God is not far from any of us — seeking Him is the first step toward finding Him. Acts 17:27 assures us of His nearness. The distance we feel from God in dark seasons is not a reflection of His location. He has not moved. He is waiting to be sought. Feelings are unreliable guides — what we know about God is what steadies us. Emotions shift constantly, especially in seasons of fear, grief, or chronic pain. Choosing to rely on what we know rather than how we feel is an act of faith that God honors. Scripture is God’s primary means of communicating with us — daily reading deepens the relationship. Seeking God is not only a posture of the heart. It has a practical shape: opening the Bible, praying, worshipping, listening to teaching, talking with a spiritual mentor. God delivers us from our fears not always by removing them but by meeting us in them. David was still in danger when he wrote Psalm 34. God’s deliverance was not escape from the situation — it was His presence and peace within it. The same is available to us. A Prayer for You Today Dear God, I am choosing to seek You out today. I have turned away from You for too long. Turn my eyes and my heart to You always. I do not want to live in the shadow of my doubts, but rather in the freedom of Your love. Help me to rely on what I know rather than how I feel. My feelings change so much and are not always reliable. I trust in You to deliver me from all my fears. I will seek You out always, God. Shane J. Wood, professor of New Testament and its origins at Ozark Christian College and author of Thinning the Veil, returns for the eighth episode in the faith and politics series — this time on Revelation. Wood argues that the question the series has been circling is the question Revelation opens with. Christians in Asia Minor were living under an emperor in decline, caught in a conflict they hadn't chosen, and the book was written to tell them how to stand. Much of the conversation is about definitions. When the crucified king is at the center, what counts as victory changes — which is why Smyrna's reward for faithfulness is that things will get worse. Wood reads Pliny's letter to Trajan as a Roman governor's genuine confusion at a group whose stubbornness took the form of being better citizens than his citizens. They also discuss why worship was a national security matter in Rome, the iconography of Washington, why obedience and subversion both have textual warrant, and Wood's closing claim: that the early church regarded the emperor as a figure to be pitied rather than feared. In this Bonus Episode of "On The Ground" | Service has the ability to radically change us. God can use serving others to mold and shape our hearts to look more like His. This is what happened in Angie’s life—a volunteer Kristy met while on the ground in Mississippi. Hear how the Lord is using Angie’s testimony to show others that they are never too far from Him. Jason Taft, an assistant director with Samaritan’s Purse U.S. Disaster Relief, met Angie in Mississippi after a tornado tore through the southern part of the state. He was amazed by her skills on the skid-steer, but even more amazed by her story. Angie has known about God her entire life, but she has not always walked with Him. Her upbringing was hard, and her adult life has been marked by many trials and disappointments. When twin tornadoes came through her town, Angie went out and served with U.S. Disaster Relief. She kept going back, day after day. In her private life, Angie was in active alcoholism and plagued by grief. But when she was serving, she was not drinking. Angie continually cried out to the Lord for help. About a year later, God delivered her from alcohol. Service was the catalyst that the Lord used to change Angie's heart. And now she gets to serve all over the country, using her abilities and sharing her story with homeowners and fellow volunteers. Your Nightly Scripture - Putting My Hope in God Instead of People (Psalm 146)
Evening Scripture Psalm, Chapter 146 “Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.” Evening Reflection As a child, I remember asking my parents for reassurance after getting hurt or becoming ill: “Are you sure I will get better? Do you promise?” Usually, my mother would nod her head before assuring me that I would feel better soon. Only later did I learn that I was wrong to ask my parents to promise something they could never keep. Protect me from every harm and disaster? That is something no human can do. Children naturally seek this protection, but the need for security remains as adults. We can often make the same mistake by misplacing our hopes: We cling to friends, spouses, governments, and rulers thinking they can provide the safety we crave, the promise that nothing bad will touch us or those we love. Only with time and experience do we learn not to put our hopes in people, for they will inevitably let us down. Scripture tells us not to put our trust in humans since they have no ability to ultimately save us, and they will face an end like everyone else (see Psalm 118:8-9; Isaiah 2:22). Instead, we are to look to the Lord, who “is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them — he remains faithful forever” (Psalm 146:6). He alone is the One who can give us the security and salvation we seek. Not only does He sustain us, but He provides us with more blessings than we could ever deserve or imagine. Instead of looking to something or someone to help us feel safe or reassured, may we look to the One who is the Author and Sustainer of life. He breaks the chains of the oppressed and protects the vulnerable. Out of anyone in our lives, even the most trustworthy, the Lord is the only One who will never let us down (Hebrews 13:5-6). He won’t promise that nothing bad will ever touch us, or our loved ones, again. But He does promise to be with us always. And our future in Christ is secure: all will be well when we walk with Him in eternity. Evening Prayer Lord of every promise, I offer my voice to the many throughout time who have praised You. Forgive me for the times I have turned to others or to institutions for assurance and help that only You can provide. They cannot save me or keep me from suffering. So, I proclaim with all the other saints, that my trust is in You as my help and hope. May I not look to rulers. May I not look to money. May I not look to family. May I not look to friends. For only You remain steadfast when all is unsteady and unsure. You will never leave me, not even when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - Trusting God With What You Cannot Fix
There is something in many of us that genuinely believes, against all evidence, that if we just get our hands on the problem, we can fix it. A YouTube tutorial, enough determination, sufficient effort. Where there is a will, there is a way. Except sometimes there is not. There is a word for the things that will not be fixed this side of heaven: inconsolable things. The kinds of suffering that remain unresolved, the losses that do not fully heal, the situations that circle without resolution, the prayers that have been prayed for years without the answer arriving. Our world is full of them. Psalm 46 was written into exactly that kind of world. The earth is giving way. Mountains are falling into the sea. Nations are in an uproar. And then God speaks. Here is something worth sitting with in that verse. When God says be still, He is not primarily speaking to anxious believers telling them to calm down. He is speaking into the chaos itself. He is speaking to the raging, to the inconsolable, to the things that seem out of control. This is the same voice that spoke into a storm on the Sea of Galilee and said: hush. And the storm obeyed. That is where our stillness actually comes from. Not from talking ourselves into calm, not from managing our anxiety well enough. But from knowing that God has spoken into the chaos, that He is God over it, and that one day every inconsolable thing on earth will find its resolution in Him. We cannot fix everything. Some things will not be made right until Jesus makes all things new. But those things are not outside of His care or beyond His authority. We can surrender them tonight. Place them in the hands of the One who speaks to chaos and is obeyed. Tonight, cease striving. What belongs to God can go back to God. Ponder Tonight The be still of Psalm 46 is not primarily an invitation to quiet meditation. It is God’s word of authority spoken into the chaos, which means our internal stillness flows from knowing He is sovereign over what we cannot control. There is a meaningful difference between things that belong to us to act on and things that belong to God to resolve. Sorting those out honestly, and releasing the latter, is one of the most important and most difficult acts of faith available to us. Inconsolable things, the losses and situations that will not be fully made right in this lifetime, are not outside of God’s care. They are held by the same One who will one day make all things new. That does not erase the pain, but it does change the nature of the waiting. We do not have to figure out tonight how to make everything work out. What actually belongs to us tomorrow can wait until tomorrow. Tonight is for surrendering what is beyond our fixing into hands that were always better suited to hold it. Tonight’s Scripture “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” — Psalm 46:10, ESV Your Evening Prayer Father, We have so little control over our lives, and yet we keep trying to grab it. We keep believing that if we can just get our hands on the situation, we can fix it. But there are things that will not be fixed until Jesus makes all things right. Tonight we surrender those into Your hands. You know the inconsolable things in our lives. The things that still hurt, still feel unfinished, still remain unresolved. Thank You that even the things You have not yet fixed are not outside Your care. Tonight, help us cease striving. Place what we cannot control into Your hands. Speak into our chaos the same word You spoke into the storm. And let us rest i
