    The 2026 Tomato Review Show

Redwood Barn Nursery owner Don Shor of Davis, California and myself finally got around to putting the 2026 Tomato season to bed…except for the ones that are hanging on for dear life. In today’s podcast, we sing the high notes and low notes of our tomato growing efforts this year, with lots of gardening advice thrown in for good measure. How was your tomato season? Any favorites? Any failures? Any surprises? Let us know in the comments, and be sure to mention where you were doing your gardening this summer. One of the first to comment was Keith, located in the eastern portion of the San Francisco Bay area. He actually commented before the tomato season was ending: “When you two get together to talk about the 2026 tomato season, I'd like to put in a good word for my San Marzano tomato harvest in Contra Costa County. I had a good crop, mostly because the weather wasn't too hot. Tomorrow is sauce-making day! I have a set-up that lets me cook outside.” There’s a complete, human-edited transcript of the podcast near the bottom of this newsletter. Here are the main points of our podcast conversation: This is a public episode. 419 // Why Budget-First Decorating Can Leave You With a Room You Still Don't Love

Why Budget-First Decorating Can Leave You With a Room You Still Don't Love Before you spend money redecorating a room, there are five questions worth asking yourself. The answers can help you decide what to keep, what to change, and where to spend your decorating budget so you create a home that reflects your style, supports your life, and feels good to live in. Because here's the thing: your budget matters, but it shouldn't be the only thing guiding your decorating decisions. When you start with price instead of purpose, you can end up buying things that don't solve the problem, don't fit your aesthetic, or leave you wishing you'd made a different choice. Whether you're ready for a complete room refresh or just feel like something in your home needs to change, these five questions will help you approach your next decorating reset with more clarity and confidence. In This Episode Why you're ready for a home decorating reset and how your motivation should shape your decisions How to recognize when your design aesthetic has evolved and why a little refinement doesn't mean starting over How to evaluate what your room needs to function better for your everyday life Why the things you want aren't always the things you should buy first How to prioritize decorating purchases based on the impact they'll make in your space The three filters every decorating decision should pass: your aesthetic, your feeling word, and your budget The 5 Questions to Ask Before You Reset a Room 1. Why am I ready for a reset? Are you preparing for holiday guests, working toward a deadline, or simply ready for your home to feel different? Understanding your motivation helps you make better decisions. And while hosting might be the reason you start, your home should ultimately work for you, too. 2. Has my aesthetic changed? Our tastes evolve, and that's perfectly normal. You might find yourself drawn to different colors, materials, or styles than you were a few years ago. If your aesthetic has shifted, think refinement rather than replacement. Use what you've learned about your style to edit what you own and identify what no longer fits. If your style has changed dramatically, you may need a more comprehensive plan than a simple room reset. 3. What do I need this room to do? Whether you're decorating from scratch or refreshing a familiar space, start with its purpose. What's working? What's frustrating? What would make the room more functional for the way you live now? Your home should work harder for you, not the other way around. 4. What do I want? It's easy to see something beautiful and immediately decide you need it. But there's a difference between wanting something and needing it. When you understand both lists, you can make more intentional choices. And when something you want also meets a real need, that's an especially good place to focus. 5. What will make the biggest impact? This might be the most important question of all. Once you've identified your needs and wants, decide which change will make the biggest difference in the room. The answer isn't always the least expensive item or the thing you've been eyeing online. It's the choice that moves you closer to the home you're trying to create. The Three Filters for Better Decorating Decisions Before making a purchase or committing to a change, run it through three filters: Aesthetic: Does it fit the look and style I'm creating? Feeling word: Does it help my home feel the way I want it to feel? Budget: Does it make sense for the money I have available to spend? All three matter. A beautiful bargain isn't a good deal if it doesn't fit your style or help you create the feeling you're after. And the most expensive option isn't automatically the best one, either. The goal isn't to buy more. It's to make thoughtful decisions that help you love the home you have. Before you start your next room reset, take a little time to answer these five questions. You might discover that you don't need a whole new room. You might just need a clearer plan. Want a little help with YOUR reset?
