    SEWN Magazine with Michelle Morris

What happens when a sewing machine, a dozen magazines, and a whole lot of “wait, where’s the Black representation?” turn into a publishing dream? On Stitch Please, Lisa talks with Michelle Morris, founder of Sewn Magazine, about sewing, creativity, representation, and building the magazine she couldn’t find. Plus, a denim ceiling proves that when Michelle gets an idea, even the ceiling isn’t safe. Where You Can Michelle! ===== Hosted By: Dr. Lisa Woolfork Senior Producer: Krystal Hill Producer: Mike Bryant ===== ======= Dr. Lisa Woolfork is an associate professor of English specializing in African American literature and culture. Her teaching and research explore Black women writers, Black identity, trauma theory, and American slavery. She is the founder of Black Women Stitch, the sewing group where Black lives matter. She is also the host/producer of Stitch Please, a weekly audio podcast that centers on Black women, girls, and femmes in sewing. In the summer of 2017, she actively resisted the white supremacist marches in her community, Charlottesville, Virginia. The city became a symbol of lethal resurging white supremacist violence. She remains active in a variety of university and community initiatives, including the Community Engaged Scholars program. She believes in the power of creative liberation. Sustainable Sewing and Fabric Destashing with Caroline Bacle of Destasher

Send us Fan Mail What happens when a passion for sewing grows into a platform designed to help sewists make more sustainable choices? In this episode of The Sewing Social, Caroline Bacle joins us to talk about her journey from Montreal to London, her love of sewing and dressmaking, and the story behind Destasher - a platform created to help sewists give unwanted fabrics, sewing patterns, haberdashery and other sewing supplies a second life. Caroline shares how her own experiences as a sewist led her to think differently about the amount of fabric and sewing supplies we accumulate, and how Destasher has grown into a community where sewists can buy, sell, share and discover materials that might otherwise go unused. We chat about sustainable sewing, slow fashion, fabric destashing and the sewing community, as well as the challenges of building a platform around a community of people who love to make their own clothes.
