After five long days of facing my fear for Parenting Fears Week, its time for a palette cleanser before Eric and I dive into our Parenting Fears analysis episode. Day three in Parenting Fears Week of 60 Days of Halloween is Grace, a horror film that plays on the fears of a child dying, as well as the fears of not being able to provide for your child (in that order...). A quick glance at the "tomatometer" on Rotten Tomatoes shows a sizable discrepancy between critics (69% fresh) and audience (30% fresh) ratings. I can understand the audience rating, but I actually fall more onto the side of the critics - you just have to watch the movie with a certain perspective. So, join me and Eric as we give our thoughts on Grace and what you need to have in mind when watching it! This Australian horror movie is technically a zombie movie, but (like any good horror movie) the fear comes not from the zombies, but from the decisions the characters have to make - and the consequences of those decisions. It's September, which means my 60 Days of Halloween coverage has officially begun!! This year, I will be doing themed weeks with the theme of each week being a fear of either myself, my co-host Eric, or my special guest for the week. I'll be doing shorter, review episodes during the course of the week, culminating in an in-depth analysis episode at the end of the week to really dive into why each film was so terrifying. I'm kicking things off by focusing on my fear (as a new parent) of being a father. First up in my parenting fear week is: A Quiet Place. When one thinks of the phrase "a quiet place," they typically think of a calm, serene location where they go for respite, reflection, or something else synonymous and alliterative with "rest." However, thanks to John Krasinski, Bryan Woods, and Scott Beck, that phrase now elicits sheer terror! Like any good horror movie, the underlying fears of A Quiet Place are what make it so terrifying. There is great creature design, but the guilt, doubt, loss, love, mistakes, and sacrifices of the characters are what really gives tremendous depth to what the monsters represent. One of the things that I love so much about horror movies (that are done well) is that they peel back that masks that humanity wears to conceal it's darker side: doubt, guilt, insecurity, hubris, fear - all of the things that are a natural part of humanity, but the roots of horror when taken to excess. One of the masters of exposing the darkness of humanity was Edgar Allen Poe, which is part of why his stories have endured and continue to be retold. If you grew up loving the Super Mario games, you were probably sorely disappointed with the Super Mario Bros. movie due to its lack of similarity to the game you knew and loved. If you are a fan of indie horror, you are probably familiar with the name Graham Skipper. Whether he has the lead role or just a bit part (Beyond the Gates, Almost Human, Feeding Time...just to name a few), Graham's genuine love for horror shines through practically every role he plays. And that genuine love for horror is certainly apparent in his feature-length directorial debut, Sequence Break, which just recently premiered on Shudder! The IMDB description of Sequence Break is: "A surreal sci-fi romance wherein a beautiful young woman and strange metaphysical forces threaten the reality of a reclusive video arcade technician, resulting in bizarre biomechanical mutations and a shocking self-realization."
