Lesson 11: Satisfaction — The CEO’s Currency
The CEO subprocess from Lesson 9 gets a summary report, not raw data. But a report doesn't make decisions by itself — something has to say this matters more than that, right now. That something is dispositional qualia: hunger, curiosity, pain, pleasure, all pulling on the same set of scales. Here's the twist. Those pulls are the inputs, not the decision. The output is satisfaction — and evolution didn't wire you to pursue survival directly. It wired you to pursue satisfaction, and tuned it so that what satisfies tends, on average, to be what survives. You don't experience yourself as a survival machine — you experience yourself as someone with things you care about. That's not a comforting story layered on top of the mechanism. It's what the mechanism actually is. 🎧 Apple Podcasts or Spotify — search The Functional Mind 📖 thefunctionalmind.substack.com Music by Brylie Christopher – full credits: Solo Brylie Christopher - Solo - Free Music Archive This is a public episode.
