A ratchet permits motion in one direction while preventing it in the other. The teeth catch when you try to turn it back.
The Functional Ratchet works by the same logic — but the teeth are made of survival pressure rather than metal. A winning function, once established, becomes load-bearing. Losing it becomes nearly fatal. And so it persists — not because nature has a plan, but because retreat is almost always fatal.
This is how four billion years of accumulated functional complexity gets built without ever having to start from scratch. And it is still running — in evolution, in learning, and in the civilization reading these words.
