Lesson 12: Functional Free Will

Free will has had three answers for centuries, and none of them quite work. Libertarian free will puts the self outside physical causation — which just smuggles the ghost back in. Hard determinism says the whole thing is an illusion — technically consistent, but it throws out the nagging insistence that your experience is real. Compatibilism says they were never really in conflict — true, probably, but it redefines freedom instead of explaining it. Lesson 12 argues the causal chain can be complete in principle and still be unknowable in practice — not to you, not to anyone. That unknowability isn't a gap in the theory. It's where freedom actually lives. You're always compelled to do what you want — but you can't know what you'll want until the moment you choose it. 🎧 Apple Podcasts or Spotify — search The Functional Mind 📖 thefunctionalmind.substack.com Music by Brylie Christopher – full credits: Solo Brylie Christopher - Solo - Free Music Archive This is a public episode.
