Lesson 20: The Agent and the Self-Model
transcript
show notes
Someone in the meeting says something you believe is wrong, and everyone is letting it slide. One part of your mind asks what the best move is: who's in the room, what's at stake. Another part asks something else entirely: what would the person I think I am do?
Lesson 20: The Agent and the Self-Model separates the agent that makes decisions from the self-model, the set of conceptual models the agent keeps about who it is. It shows how the self-model adds a stance to each preference, turns those stances into identity, and gives the agent a compass for what someone like me does in a situation like this. It also explains how the self gets built: not by finding out who we really were all along, but by becoming, a bit at a time, the person we model ourselves to be.
