Maybe You're Not Actually Training to Failure | EP 117

Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas breaks down exercise science research showing that even experienced lifters chronically underestimate how many reps they have left, and the further they are from failure, the more wrong they usually are. She connects it to a coaching principle that goes way beyond the gym: discomfort is not the same thing as your actual limit. In this episode, she covers: Why even experienced lifters underestimate how many reps they actually have left The research on anchoring and how saying a number out loud becomes your ceiling Why discomfort gets mistaken for your true limit, and what that means for how you coach How the GROW model's optimization pillar applies to unrecognized capacity, in the gym and with clients Why chronically underestimating your capacity isn't a skills problem, it's a perception problem Episodes Referenced: #92: The Science of Not Giving Up (And How to Coach It) Connect with me on Instagram! Why Your Clients Aren't Getting Results (with Dr. Matt Shiver) | EP 116

Most coaches think a bigger promise sells better. Dr. Kasey Jo sits down with marketing expert (and real-life friend) Dr. Matt Shiver to make the case that it's actually setting clients up to fail. They dig into a question most coaches never ask: what does "success" even mean for your offer? Is it the client hitting the exact number you promised on the sales call, or something more honest? In this episode: Why firing "uncoachable" clients is a red flag, not a flex How to define success so you stop overpromising and underdelivering The 3 psychological needs behind every client who stops following through Whether you've ever lost a client who was actually getting results, or you're the one who's fired a few "uncoachable" ones yourself, this episode will change how you think about both. Is NLP a Legit Method for Coaching? | EP 115

For years, coaches have asked Kasey the same thing: does the Health Mindset Coaching Certification teach neuro-linguistic programming, also known as NLP? Short answer: No. But there's nuance to the "why not". She finally sat down, outlined the research, and provides her perspective about NLP this episode. In this episode, she covers: Where NLP actually came from and what it claims The one theory the whole system is built on, and what happens when it's tested What a review of 315 NLP articles actually found The parts of NLP that do actually work, and where they really come from Three questions to ask before buying into any coaching methodology Whether you're curious about NLP or have your own perspectives on it (positive or negative), you will enjoy this episode. The (Surprising) Research on Gratitude Practices | EP 114

Gratitude journals and gratitude meditations get talked about like a cheat code for happiness, but the research tells a more complicated story. Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas breaks down a massive new analysis of over 140 studies and 24,000 people to show what gratitude practices actually do, and what they don't. In this episode, she covers: Why the popular claim that gratitude rewires your brain and boosts happiness is bigger than what the research actually supports What a 2025 analysis of 140+ studies across 24,000 people and 28 countries found about the real effect size of gratitude practices Why gratitude practices lose their edge when compared to other reflective practices like journaling or acts of kindness What the research says about relying on gratitude practices with clients dealing with depression or anxiety How to help clients choose the practice they'll actually stick with instead of chasing the "perfect" one If you've ever told a client to start a gratitude journal because it seemed like the obvious thing to recommend, this episode is for you. Why Vision Boards Don't Actually Work | EP 113

Most vision boards end up collecting dust by mid-year. In this episode, Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas shares a research breakdown that explains why vision boards are fun, but maybe not very effective for actually achieving your goals. "Manifesting" and fantasizing about what you want, might actually be the reason you haven't seen success yet. In this episode, she covers: The difference between expecting something and fantasizing about it, and why the research shows they lead to almost opposite outcomes Why picturing a goal as already achieved can quietly lower your energy and motivation to go pursue it How the effect gets stronger the more you actually want the thing you're fantasizing about Why a fixed mindset makes the downside of positive fantasizing even worse The WOOP framework and mental contrasting, and why pairing visualization with a plan for the obstacles is the version that actually works If you've ever made a vision board that ended up gathering dust, this episode explains why, and what to do differently. BONUS: He Wasn't Expecting to Be Mindset Coached [LIVE]

A coach on this live Q&A asked a simple question about going part-time in his coaching business, and before anyone realized what was happening, 3 HMCC grads were coaching him live, unscripted, using everything they'd learned in the program. Dr. Kasey Jo, Greg, Jeff, and Paige each jump in with a different question, peeling back another layer of what's actually going on underneath a logistics question that turns out to be about a lot more than logistics. This was not something anyone planned and it was so good, we needed to share it on the podcast with you! Get a sneak peek of Module One HERE

BONUS: Questions I Asked a Hesitant Buyer [LIVE]

Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas sat down live with a coach who was so close to enrolling in The Health Mindset Coaching Certification (Dr. Kasey Jo's signature program)... but couldn't quite get past her own hesitation. This episode is the live recording from an open Q&A call, but really ended up being a 1-1 conversation between Dr. Kasey Jo and this coach. You'll hear the real, unscripted conversation, the exact questions Dr. Kasey Jo asked to get to the root of the resistance, and the reframes that shifted things. It's not a highlight reel. It's the whole messy, honest middle part where someone works through a decision in real time, and it says as much about coaching psychology as it does about the decision itself. If you've ever talked yourself out of something you knew you wanted, or you coach clients who do the same thing to themselves, this episode is for you. Get a sneak peek of Module One HERE

The Gap Between Intention and Action (Theory of Planned Behavior) | EP 112

A student inside the Health Mindset Coaching Certification asked Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas a simple question: why isn't the theory of planned behavior taught in HMCC? Her answer gets into the intention-behavior gap, the academic debate over one of psychology's most cited theories, and why she teaches something different instead. In this episode, she covers: Why the theory of planned behavior doesn't show up inside HMCC, even though its three components (attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control) are worth understanding The intention-behavior gap, and why a big shift in intention rarely produces a big shift in actual behavior The academic debate over whether it's "time to retire the theory of planned behavior," and how the original researcher responded Why perceived behavioral control is really just self-efficacy, and how that shows up throughout HMCC The behavior change theories she teaches instead, from the transtheoretical model to self-determination theory If-then planning as one simple, research-backed tool for closing the gap between intention and action What to do the next time a client says "I know what to do, I just don't do it" If you've ever had a client say they know exactly what they should be doing and just aren't doing it, this episode is for you. The Coaching Skill AI and GLP-1s Can't Touch | EP 111

Dr. Kasey Jo sits down with program mentors of The Health Mindset Coaching Certification, Brooks Hurbis and Greg Sutton, for a roundtable on what's actually changing coaching right now, and what hasn't changed at all. In this episode, they cover: Brooks and Greg's own coaching journeys, including the exact moment each of them realized giving clients a plan wasn't enough How to take responsibility for your clients' success without feeling burdened by it Where ChatGPT is genuinely useful for coaches and clients, and the one thing it can't replicate no matter how good the plan it generates is How GLP-1 medications fit into coaching (and why "one powerful tool" is a very different thing than "the whole plan") The real shift Brooks and Greg see in coaches' language from entering to graduating HMCC, from "my client has excuses" to "my client has valid reasons and I can help" What confidence looks like before and after, backed up by a very telling detail about the HMCC Facebook group ENROLLMENT FOR THE FALL 2026 CLASS OF HMCC IS OPEN NOW! What to Do When Clients Feel Uncoachable | EP 110

Have you seen the content lately mapping out "coachable" versus "uncoachable" clients? It's everywhere, and it's getting hundreds of thousands of likes. Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas breaks down why that label usually has nothing to do with the client, and everything to do with the coach running out of tools. She covers: Why the "uncoachable" label shows up the moment a coach runs out of tools, not the moment a client runs out of potential How labeling a client that way changes the way you coach them, whether you realize it or not Why self-sabotage isn't a dead end, it's a signal for you as a coach One question to ask in your next check-in that can completely shift a stuck client relationship If you've ever written off a client as a lost cause (even if don't want to say that outloud), this episode is for you. Why Clients Resist Your Best Advice | EP 109

Ever give a client advice they asked for, only to watch them push back, get defensive, or quietly stop responding to you altogether? Kasey breaks down the psychology behind why this happens and what it actually means for how you coach. In this episode, she covers: What psychological reactance is and why it shows up in coaching relationships Why clients resist advice they directly asked for, even when they trust you The research on trait reactance and which clients are more prone to it How directive language like "you need to do this" can backfire A simple shift in how to deliver recommendations so clients actually follow through If you've ever wondered why a client keeps circling back to the exact habit you're helping them change, or why they've gone quiet on check-ins after agreeing with your advice, this episode is for you. The ABC Method for Clients Who Won't Follow Through | EP 108

Why tweaking the plan again isn't going to fix your client's follow-through Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas breaks down why endlessly tweaking a client's plan doesn't actually fix their lack of follow-through, and why reaching for the "uncoachable client" label is often more about coach relief than reality. She walks through the ABCs of motivation from self-determination theory, autonomy, belongingness, and competence, and shows how identifying which need isn't being met changes the entire conversation. In this episode, she covers: Why labeling a client "uncoachable" gives coaches short-term relief but doesn't solve anything long term Why perpetually adjusting the plan treats the symptom instead of the root cause The ABCs of motivation: autonomy, belongingness, and competence, and how to spot which one is missing A better question to ask than "why won't they just do it?" Stop Trying to Fix Your Clients' Mistakes | EP 107

Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas breaks down why your instinct to fix your clients' worst days first can actually backfire, and shares a real story from an HMCC student who tested a "strengths-first" approach with surprising results. In this episode, she covers: Why the "righting reflex" makes coaches jump straight to what went wrong, and why that instinct isn't a flaw A real case study where focusing only on a client's best step-count days led to every day improving the following week The psychology behind why leading with strengths builds self-efficacy, autonomy, and competence faster than leading with fixes A tangible "strengths-first question swap" coaches can use in their very next client check-in How to bridge back into setbacks and off days once trust and momentum are built If you've ever caught yourself digging into what went wrong before acknowledging what went right, this episode is for you. 4 Elements Every Sales Message Needs (The SELL Framework) | EP 106

Most coaches are great at indirect selling. Direct selling? That's where things get quiet. In this episode, Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas breaks down the SELL Framework, a four-part tool she teaches inside the HMCC business track, designed to help coaches communicate about their offers clearly, confidently, and without the ick. In this episode, she covers: Why freezing or going vague during a direct pitch usually isn't a sales problem, it's a framework problem S is for Scarcity: how to use real constraints ethically and why manufactured urgency erodes trust faster than anything E is for Exchange: why most coaches undersell what clients are actually getting and how to make the value visible L is for Livelihood: why listing features isn't enough and how to paint the transformation instead L is for Likeness: how to use social proof and authenticity to make the right person feel like this was made for them If you've ever talked yourself out of a direct CTA, felt pushy writing a sales email, or just didn't know what to say, this episode gives you the exact structure to work from. Imposter Syndrome, Niching Down, and Clients Who Quit: Your Questions Answered | EP 105

In this Q&A episode, Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas tackles 6 questions straight from her audience, covering everything from how to find your niche and translate it into your content, to what it actually sounds like to use values-based goal setting in a real coaching conversation. She also gets personal about her best business investments ever, whether a cognitive behavioral coaching mini course is coming, and the book that may or may not be written depending on... how much you bug her about it! In this episode, she covers: Why asking clients "what are your values?" usually backfires, and what to ask instead The real reason specificity in your niche attracts more clients, not fewer How to think about clients who leave before their time is up without spiraling Why credentials and experience don't protect you from imposter syndrome (and what actually helps) Her three best business investments, including one she didn't recognize as an investment at the time What's happening with the HMCC overhaul and whether a cognitive behavioral coaching mini course could be next If you've ever quietly wondered whether two clients leaving means something is wrong with you as a coach, this episode is for you. Coaching Clients When Stress Tanks Self-Control | EP 104

Your client checks in and says it was a stressful week, so they couldn't stay on track. Now what? Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas breaks down the neuroscience behind why stress and self-control are literally competing for the same mental resources, and what that means for how you coach through it. This isn't a stress management episode. It's a coaching skills episode. She covers: Why stress and self-control are biologically at odds (not just emotionally) The "battery" analogy she uses with HMCC students to help clients audit their mental capacity The three most common coach responses to stress excuses and why two of them backfire How to reframe low-consistency weeks as a design problem, not a character flaw The language shifts that accidentally reinforce a fixed mindset about self-control If you've ever validated a client's stressful week and immediately wondered if you just let them off the hook, this episode is for you. The CLEAR Framework for Better Sales Calls | EP 103

In this first episode of a new series, The 15-Minute Framework, Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas breaks down the CLEAR decision framework, a tool she originally created for HMCC alumni to use on sales and discovery calls. She covers: What CLEAR stands for and how each step guides a sales conversation toward a confident decision Why most prospective clients misidentify their actual problem, and how to help them get to what's really going on without telling them they're wrong The difference between ambivalence and resistance, and why trying to "fix" ambivalence too fast backfires How most objections come down to autonomy, belonging, or competence, and how to address the real barrier underneath Why the same coaching skills used with clients are exactly what make a sales call feel less salesy If you've ever felt like a sales call turns you into someone you're not, this episode gives you a framework to make it feel like coaching instead. The One Belief Your Business Can't Grow Without | EP 102

The reason your ideal clients aren't buying might have nothing to do with your offer. Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas introduces her concept of the "root belief," the one thing your ideal client needs to believe before any of your content, copy, or offer can actually land. If that belief isn't there, it doesn't matter how good your testimonials are or how clearly you've laid out your program. She covers: What a root belief is and why it drives every buying decision your ideal client makes Why coaches with great content and strong offers still struggle to convert How to identify your own root belief and what to do if you can't Where the root belief should show up (and often doesn't) across your content, lead magnets, emails, and sales page Why the same psychological mechanism that determines whether your clients change is what determines whether someone buys from you If you've ever had someone DM you, engage with your content, and still not buy, this one's for you. If you've ever felt like your business problems were strategy problems, this episode will flip that completely. Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas sits down with her mentors James and Jenni Wedmore for a conversation about what business breakthroughs actually require, and why the internal work isn't separate from the business work. In this episode, they cover: What a business breakthrough actually is and why it almost never looks like what you expect Why every problem in your business starts as a problem of the mind, and what to do with that How James took his business from $2M to $10M in one year What you're avoiding in your business, why you're avoiding it, and what that's costing you Why the "uncoachable client" label says more about the coach than the client A practical experiment for the skeptical, analytical person who wants to see if the internal work actually matters If you've been wondering why the strategy isn't working even when you're doing everything right, this conversation is for you. 100 episodes. 1,000 students. Six years mentoring health and fitness coaches. For the milestone 100th episode, Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas is sharing the 10 things she couldn't have known without all of it. In this episode, she covers: Why the coaches who care most are often the ones struggling most with client motivation and consistency The ceiling coaches unknowingly place on their own clients (and how it quietly limits outcomes) Why self-doubt is the real #1 thing holding coaches back, not skill gaps, not their niche, not their content How coaches with 20 years of experience still deal with imposter syndrome and what to do with it instead of fighting it The difference between taking your work seriously and taking it personally, and why it matters for burnout Why the most effective coaches rarely tell clients what to do What most certifications miss and why HMCC exists to fill that specific gap Why community might be the most underrated factor in coaching career growth The uncomfortable truth about coaches falling out of love with their work How mindset and behavior change skills end up changing more than your coaching If you've ever wondered whether the struggles you're feeling as a coach mean something is wrong with you, this one is going to hit. 🎉 It's Episode 100!
