With the World Cup already underway, I want to talk about one of the most confusing aspects of international sports. Imagine you’re watching the World Cup for the very first time. You see England. You see Scotland. You see Wales. Sometimes you even see Northern Ireland. And naturally you think: “Wait a second… aren’t they all part of the United Kingdom?” If the United Kingdom is one country, then where is Team UK? Why isn’t there a British national team? And why does this only happen in soccer? After all, during the Olympics, these athletes compete under Team GB. So what exactly is going on? To answer that question, we actually need to go back hundreds of years. Because this isn’t really a soccer story. It’s a story about kings, kingdoms, wars, unions, identity, and eventually football.

Soccer?

什么是 injury time? The goal is ruled out for offside."(这球因越位被判无效。) 2. 主播常用语: "VAR is checking the goal."(VAR 正在检查这个进球。) "The decision is overturned."(经过 VAR 审查,原本的判决被推翻。) 3. Injury Time / Stoppage Time It’s not over until the final whistle."(不到最后哨音,比赛都还没有结束。) 衍生词:Stoppage-time winner(补时阶段的致胜绝杀球)。 ️ Part 4:看球赛必备常用术语 (精选 15 词) 比分与战况 Own goal 乌龙球(把球踢进自家球门) Equalizer 追平球 Winner 致胜球 Hat trick 帽子戏法(单场比赛个人进 3 球) Clean sheet 零封、没失球(例:They kept a clean sheet.) Underdog 弱队、不被看好的一方 Upset 爆冷门(例:Japan pulled off an upset.) (球队会变成Down to ten men剩十人应战) Penalty kick 点球 / 十二码罚球(禁区内犯规获得的单挑机会) The Beautiful Game(美丽的运动)—— 这就是足球。

Today, I want to talk about what will probably be the biggest global event of this summer: The 2026 FIFA World Cup. Now, before you click away because you’re not a soccer fan, hear me out. Because honestly, I’m not exactly a hardcore soccer fan either. Growing up in Asia, soccer wasn’t really the sport everyone talked about. Then I went to the United States, where “football” usually means a completely different sport. And now I’m living in Australia, where people are obsessed with rugby, cricket, and AFL. So I’ve never really lived in a place where soccer was the undisputed king. But every four years, even people like me get pulled into the World Cup. And I think that’s what’s so fascinating. Because somehow, a sport that many of us barely follow suddenly becomes the center of the world’s attention. People who haven’t watched a single soccer match in four years suddenly become fanatics. Friends start talking about group-stage predictions. Families gather around televisions. Social media explodes. Entire countries seem to stop functioning for a few weeks. And somehow, billions of people start caring about the exact same thing. So today, I want to answer a simple question: Why should you care about the 2026 World Cup—even if you’re not a soccer fan? What makes this World Cup different? How did the World Cup become the biggest sporting event on Earth? Why is this year’s tournament likely to be so exciting? And if you’re a complete beginner, what should you actually pay attention to? Let’s get into it.

Today, I want to talk about a word that has suddenly become incredibly popular online. Odyssey. Not just because Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movieThe Odysseyis one of the most anticipated films in the world right now, featuring an all-star cast and based on one of the most famous stories ever told. But because recently, on Chinese social media platforms like Xiaohongshu and Weibo, people have been talking nonstop about entering their “Odyssey Era.” You see posts like: “I think I’m in my Odyssey Era.” “My twenties are one long Odyssey.” “After quitting my job, I entered my Odyssey Period.” At first, I thought it was just another internet buzzword. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized something. Maybe a lot of us really are living through our own Odyssey. And honestly? I think I am too. A year and a half ago, my life looked very different. I was still working in the education industry in China. My wife and I had a familiar routine. We had help at home. We had a support system. We had friends nearby. Life wasn’t necessarily easy, but it was predictable. Then we moved to Australia. Suddenly, everything changed. The education industry that I had spent years building a career in started facing headwinds. I was living in a new country. The kids needed to adjust to a new school system. Instead of having someone help with housework, I found myself cooking, cleaning, doing school pickups, washing dishes, folding laundry, and figuring out how Australian life works. At the same time, I was trying to reinvent myself professionally. Launching this podcast. Exploring new ideas. Thinking about new opportunities. Trying to figure out what the next chapter of my career might look like. Some days I feel excited. Some days I feel overwhelmed. And some days, I honestly have no idea what the future is supposed to look like. And that’s exactly why this idea of an Odyssey Era resonates with me. Because I suspect many of you feel the same way. Not completely lost. But not completely certain either. Somewhere in between. And that’s where today’s story begins.
