Today, I want to do something a little different. I want to start with one of the most famous lines William Shakespeare ever wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” You’ve probably heard that line before. But what comes after it is actually much more interesting. More than 400 years ago, Shakespeare tried to describe an entire human life — from the moment we’re born to the moment we die — in just seven stages. A crying baby. A schoolboy who doesn’t want to go to school. A hopeless lover. An ambitious young man trying to prove himself. A successful, respected middle-aged man. An aging old man. And finally, someone who slowly becomes dependent on others again. Together, these are often called Shakespeare’s “Seven Ages of Man.” So today, I want to read you the entire passage first. And if you don’t understand everything, don’t worry. That’s ok! This was written more than 400 years ago, and some of the English is very different from what we use today. After I read it, we’ll go through the seven stages together, talk about what Shakespeare was actually saying, and then ask one more question: Does his description of life still make sense today? ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. STAGE ONE: THE INFANT At first, the infant, Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms. STAGE TWO: THE SCHOOLBOY Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school. STAGE THREE: THE LOVER And then the lover, Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. STAGE FOUR: THE SOLDIER Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard, Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel, Seeking the bubble reputation Even in the cannon’s mouth. STAGE FIVE: THE JUSTICE And then the justice, In fair round belly with good capon lined, With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays his part. STAGE SIX: THE PANTALOON The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slippered pantaloon, With spectacles on nose and pouch on side; His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice, Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

小朋友看得超级开心,一直跟我说:“Daddy, juggling is so cool!” English Learning Card|Workplace Verbs You Can Picture 1. Many English verbs that sound professional today originally described physical actions from everyday life. In this episode, David explores 12 groups of workplace verbs through the pictures behind them. To juggle projects is like keeping several balls in the air, while driving change creates momentum and steering a team provides direction. We tackle problems when we take direct action, but wrestle with decisions when there is no simple answer. We hammer out details through repeated discussion, cultivate trust over time, and shoulder responsibilities that feel heavy. A company may weather a crisis, while a team can flesh out an early idea or cascade a strategy through different levels of an organization. These visual metaphors make subtle differences easier to understand and remember. Instead of memorizing translations, connect each verb to its original physical image. This will help you use workplace English more naturally and precisely in meetings, presentations, résumés, and interviews. 2. If I say …, it means …; but if I say …, it suggests …:用于比较两个相近表达之间的细微差别。 If I say “I manage three projects,” it means I’m responsible for them; but if I say “I’m juggling three projects,” it suggests they all need my attention at the same time. It’s not just about …; it’s about …:强调真正重要的重点。 It’s not just about participating in change; it’s about driving it forward. A is about …, while B is about …:对比两个概念的核心区别。 Drive is about momentum, while steer is about direction. We need to …, not just …:提出更深入或更有效的行动建议。 We need to tackle the root cause, not just treat the symptoms. The company managed to weather the crisis without cutting jobs. What responsibilities are you currently juggling at work or in your personal life? Have you ever had to wrestle with a difficult decision? What made it difficult? What qualities does someone need to spearhead an important project? How can a company cultivate trust among its employees? What kind of crisis has your team or company had to weather? 5. We need to ________ the details before signing the agreement. She was asked to ________ the company’s new AI initiative. Our strategy should be ________ in real customer needs. Small businesses are struggling to ________ the rise in operating costs. The basic idea is promising, but we still need to ________ the business model.

Why “Just Listen More” Is Bad Advice Today, I want to talk about probably one of the most common questions I see people asking online, especially on platforms like Xiaohongshu: How do I improve my English listening? Should I listen to English podcasts every day? Should I watch American TV shows? Should I turn off the subtitles? Should I listen to the news? And since you’re listening to Blend Inn right now, maybe you’re wondering: If I just keep listening to this podcast, will my English listening naturally get better? Well… hopefully. But… not necessarily. Because I think one of the biggest misconceptions about listening is that if you just keep exposing yourself to English—even if you barely understand it—eventually your listening will magically improve. I don’t think that’s quite how it works. Think about it. If I give you a podcast about quantum physics and you understand 10% of it, and then you listen to it for an hour every day, are you really practicing English listening? Maybe. But you might also just be spending an hour every day not understanding English. And that’s an important distinction. You don’t improve your listening simply by listening to more things you don’t understand. You improve by gradually understanding more of what you listen to. English Learning Card|Build an English Bubble for Better Listening 1. Improving English listening is not simply a matter of listening more, especially when most of the material is incomprehensible. Progress happens when you gradually understand more of what you hear. One effective approach is to build an “English bubble” around a subject you already love and understand. David did this with basketball: because he knew the players, teams, rules, and recent games, context helped him predict meaning and absorb recurring vocabulary. Strong listening combines bottom-up skills, such as recognizing sounds and sentence structures, with top-down skills, such as using background knowledge and expectations. Good material should offer three things: genuine interest, enough familiar knowledge and vocabulary, and something new that stretches you. Rather than looking up every unknown word, notice repetition and check the words that keep returning. Start small by replacing one part of your normal content consumption with English, then branch out as your confidence grows. 2. You don’t … simply by + V-ing; you … by + V-ing.:表示“不是单靠…… You don’t improve your listening simply by hearing more English; you improve it by understanding more of what you hear. Instead of choosing random podcasts, start with a topic you already love. If I were …, I would …:用虚拟语气表达假设情况下的选择或建议。 If I were choosing listening material, I would look for interest, familiarity, and challenge. The more …, the easier/more …:表示“越……,就越……”。 The more vocabulary you understand, the easier the content becomes. Even if …, … can still …:表示“即使……,仍然可以……”。 Even if you don’t understand every word, you can still follow the main idea. Why can “just listen more” be ineffective for improving English listening? What topic could you build an English bubble around, and why? How do context and background knowledge help you understand spoken English? When should you look up an unfamiliar word instead of simply continuing to listen? 5. Many learners have the ________ that difficult content is always better. Build an ________ around something you already love. Context helps you ________ unfamiliar phrases. Once familiar topics feel comfortable, ________ into new areas. The right mix of familiarity and challenge is the ________.

Pacific Ocean。 How did Mexico lose half of its country? How did that change the fate of both countries? English Learning Card|How the Mexican-American War Reshaped North America 1. After gaining independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico controlled a vast territory that included much of today’s American Southwest. Many American settlers moved into Texas, but conflicts over culture, political autonomy, and slavery eventually fueled the Texas Revolution. Texas became an independent republic in 1836 and joined the United States in 1845. A border dispute and President James K. Polk’s expansionist agenda helped trigger the Mexican-American War in 1846. After Mexico’s defeat, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo transferred a huge amount of land to the United States. The war reshaped both countries, intensified the debate over slavery, and left a lasting Mexican influence on the culture of the American Southwest. 2. California used to belong to Mexico. not only … but also …:表示“不仅…… The war not only changed the border but also intensified the debate over slavery. It was not until … that …:强调“直到…… It was not until 1845 that Texas joined the United States. If + had done, … might/would have done:用第三条件句讨论与历史事实相反的假设。 If Mexico had kept California, North American history might have unfolded differently. What makes … fascinating is that …:表达“…… What makes this war fascinating is that its effects can still be seen today. Why did Texas want to join the United States? How did the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo reshape North America? How can geography change a country’s possibilities? What Mexican influences can still be seen in the American Southwest today? 5. The war ________ in 1846. Why Some AI Researchers Think There’s a 10% Chance Imagine you’re about to board a plane, and someone tells you there’s more than a 10% chance it could crash. Would you still get on? Now imagine the plane is artificial intelligence—and the possible outcome isn’t a crash, but the extinction of humanity. It sounds like science fiction. But some of the people building advanced AI genuinely believe the risk is real. So where does that “10%” come from? What are AI researchers actually afraid of?

而 Simone 在节目里说的一句话,也许正好概括了这一期: “A difficult experience can become part of your story without becoming your whole identity.”

EP184 [全英] Why Is Making Friends So Hard as an Adult?

How Modern Life Made Connection Easier—and Friendship Harder Today, I want to talk about something that sounds very simple, but the more I think about it, the more complicated it becomes: Why is it so hard to make friends as an adult? According to a major report released by the WHO last year, roughly one in six people around the world experiences loneliness. And interestingly, loneliness is actually more common among adolescents and young adults than among older people. You can be 25, living in New York, working at a big company, going to bars every weekend, with 2,000 followers on Instagram—and still feel incredibly lonely. So today, let’s talk about adult friendship: why it gets harder, what modern loneliness actually looks like, and maybe most importantly, what we can do about it.

Boomerang hiring is becoming more common in tech. Boomerang hiring is becoming more common in tech. Not every AI-driven layoff means AI can fully replace the affected jobs. AI regret can lead companies to rehire workers they let go too quickly. The company decided to rehire several former employees. 2. AI can automate tasks without replacing entire jobs. cut too deep|裁得太多、削减过头 Some companies may have cut too deep during the first wave of AI layoffs. human oversight|人工监督 AI-generated work still requires human oversight. judgment call|需要依赖经验、没有标准答案的判断 Whether the output is good enough to ship is ultimately a judgment call. We need to complete the knowledge transfer before they leave. You can transfer files. You can’t always transfer context. We need someone who can hit the ground running. ramp up|逐步熟悉工作并达到正常生产力 It usually takes a new employee three months to ramp up. get up to speed|跟上进度、熟悉最新情况 It won’t take them long to get back up to speed. a known quantity|知根知底、表现与能力已被了解的人 Hiring a former employee feels less risky because they’re already a known quantity. 5. What’s the total comp for this role? compensation reset|薪酬结构重整 reprice talent|重新评估、定价人才 Companies are repricing talent in the AI era. reshuffle the labor market|重新洗牌劳动力市场 AI is reshuffling the labor market. 6.

EP181 [全英] Why Does Everyone Suddenly Have ADHD?

What ADHD really is, why diagnoses are rising, and what the science actually says. I don’t know if you’ve noticed this too, but over the past few years, it feels like ADHD has gone from being a relatively niche medical term to something that’s part of everyday conversation. Someone on TikTok says, “If you do these five things, you probably have ADHD.” A friend gets diagnosed at 35 and suddenly understands why they’ve struggled their whole life. Parents are talking about it. Teachers are talking about it. Even companies are talking about creating ADHD-friendly workplaces. So naturally, a lot of people start wondering: Is everyone suddenly getting ADHD? Or maybe a better question is: Has ADHD actually become more common, or are we simply getting better at recognizing it? Today, I’d like to unpack that question. We’ll talk about what ADHD actually is, how doctors diagnose it, why diagnosis seems to be increasing, why countries like the United States appear to diagnose it more often, and finally, what treatment really looks like.

因为 -ize 背后有一个很重要的语感: to make something become a certain state 也就是:让某个东西变成某种状态,什么「化」。 The company needs to mobilize its resources quickly. She mobilized the team around a shared goal. I need coffee to mobilize my brain in the morning. Mobilize is not just to move. Mobilize is to activate hidden or scattered energy and turn it into action. 这个词来自 crystal(水晶 / 晶体)。 from scattered to structured from blurry to formed 常见搭配: crystallize an idea:让一个想法成形 crystallize your thinking:理清你的思路 crystallize your goals:明确你的目标 crystallize your strategy:让策略变清楚 crystallize the issue:让问题浮现 crystallize your feelings:理清你的感受 例句: The discussion helped crystallize my thinking. Writing my MBA essays forced me to crystallize my career goals. The meeting crystallized the real issue. Crystallize is not simply to understand. It is when something vague slowly becomes clear, structured, and real. 但在日常英文里,它还有一个非常重要的语感: to make something lose its power or effect 让某个东西失去力量、失去影响、失去杀伤力。 His humor helped neutralize the tension in the room. He neutralized the awkward silence with a joke. Writing things down helps me neutralize negative thoughts. Crystallize what is unclear. Neutralize what is harmful.

Have you noticed that recently, no matter whether you’re scrolling through Instagram, Threads, or even Xiaohongshu, one word just keeps popping up? HYROX. I honestly feel like it has exploded almost overnight. A few years ago, I had never even heard of it. But now, I have friends signing up for races, gyms around Sydney are offering HYROX classes, and people who never used to post about fitness are suddenly sharing photos with medals around their necks. Then I started noticing something else. It’s not just everyday people. Professional athletes are doing HYROX. Olympians are doing HYROX. Entrepreneurs are doing HYROX. Fitness influencers, YouTubers, celebrities… they’re all jumping in. What is going on? Why has this event become so popular in such a short amount of time? So today, I want to talk about three things. First, what exactly is HYROX? Second, who created it, and how did it become one of the fastest-growing fitness competitions in the world? And finally—and I think this is the most interesting question—why is everyone suddenly obsessed with it? Because I actually don’t think this is just about fitness. I think HYROX tells us something about where fitness culture—and maybe even our own society—is heading.

You don’t just watch a Nolan movie. You experience it. You don’t just watch a Formula 1 race. You experience it. 很多时候,我们真正购买的是一种: “I was there.” Movie fans made a pilgrimage to IMAX theaters. Beatles fans make a pilgrimage to Abbey Road. 常见搭配: make a pilgrimage to somewhere:专程前往某地朝圣 movie pilgrimage:电影朝圣之旅 03|Worth the trip worth the trip:值得专程跑一趟、值得特地去 这是日常英语里非常实用的表达,不只能用来看电影。 Watching The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm is worth the trip. That restaurant is worth the trip. That museum is worth the trip. 类似表达: worth a visit:值得一去 worth the wait:值得等待 worth the money:物有所值 04|Event cinema event cinema:事件型电影;具有“必须专程去看”属性的电影。 You’re not going because you happen to have time. You’re making time for it. Scarcity makes things feel more valuable. What you’re seeing is real. Authenticity has become a luxury. 07|Every adaptation is an interpretation. Every adaptation is an interpretation. It’s a very different interpretation of the original story. 08|Masterpiece / Overrated masterpiece:杰作、经典之作 It’s a masterpiece. I think the movie is overrated.

I want to start today’s episode with a question that has probably crossed the minds of millions of people around the world. Is college still worth it? Now, I feel like this question is everywhere these days. Scroll through YouTube, Reddit, or social media, and you’ll probably come across someone saying, “College is a waste of money.” Someone else will tell you that AI is replacing everything anyway. Then another person says you can learn anything online for free. Why spend years in school when you have YouTube, online courses, podcasts, and now AI? And honestly, I understand why people are asking this question. Think about the world we live in today. If you want to learn coding, there are thousands of free tutorials online. If you want to learn marketing, finance, psychology, or even philosophy, you can find lectures from some of the world’s best universities with just a few clicks. And if you’re stuck on something, AI can explain it to you in seconds. Knowledge has never been more accessible. At the same time, education has never been more expensive. In many countries, tuition continues to rise every year. Student debt has become a serious issue. Parents are wondering whether it’s still worth making such a huge investment. Students are wondering if a degree is still the best path to success. It’s a fair question. In fact, I think it’s one of the most important questions young people are asking today.

而是:“It’s been a roller coaster.” 你也可以说:“AI stocks have been on a roller coaster.” 或者:“It’s been a roller-coaster month for investors.” 例如:“AI stocks have become increasingly volatile.” 02|A roller coaster / Roller-coaster A roller coaster It’s been a roller coaster. AI stocks have been on a roller coaster. It’s been a roller-coaster month for investors. AI stocks have become increasingly volatile. EP174「I felt discouraged.」

I felt a little discouraged。 She always stood out in class. It took me a while to fit in. Do I really belong here? Take heart. Things will get better. have a crisis of confidence — 遭遇信心危机 He’s having a crisis of confidence. question yourself — 怀疑自己 I started questioning myself. feel out of your league — 感觉周围的人远比自己厉害,自己难以胜任 I felt completely out of my league. It took me a year to find my footing. I don’t just want to survive—I want to thrive. Don’t give up vs.Don’t lose heart Don’t give up 强调不要停止行动。 When everyone is exceptional, it’s easy to start feeling ordinary. Maybe I’m just not good enough. Everyone here seems to be playing in a different league. Feeling discouraged doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in the wrong place. Give yourself time to find your footing. Don’t be afraid of rooms that challenge you. They might just become the places where you grow the most.
