    The Vitamin D Truth

Everyone talks about vitamin D. Almost nobody interprets it correctly. In this episode, Vitality Blueprint Chief Innovation Officer Dan Garner takes apart the most misread marker in performance blood work and shows why the number on the page rarely means what people think it means. A vitamin D of 32 comes back normal in the medical world, sufficient to the Endocrine Society, and still short in performance, and all three reads are right. The difference is the question you ask of the number. Dan explains why vitamin D behaves like a hormone, not a vitamin, and why that one fact changes how you read every result. From there he delivers the playbook: the four mechanisms that make vitamin D read falsely low (inflammation, low binding proteins, higher body fat, and poor absorption), the four that make it read falsely high (a recent big dose, estrogen, C3 epimers, and dehydration), and why a single inflamed draw can understate the marker by 40%. He breaks down the 500,000 IU study where more backfired and fractures went up, why supplementing people who are already sufficient does almost nothing, the magnesium and K2 cofactors that make vitamin D usable, and the target worth hitting (40 to 80). Then he lays out how to test season to season so you act preventively instead of reactively. Don't just read the number. Know whether to believe it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Video Content 00:00 - Show Format and Episode Intro 00:12 - Everyone Says You're Low on Vitamin D 00:32 - Quality of Data In, Quality of Data Out 01:10 - Reading Vitamin D Like a Bathroom Scale 02:22 - Before You Act, Know If You Can Believe It 03:20 - The More-Is-Better Dosing Trap 05:33 - One Number, Three Verdicts 06:53 - Optimal, Not Normal 07:20 - Vitamin D Acts Like a Hormone 08:32 - Why the Symptoms Are So Vague 09:31 - How Vitamin D Actually Moves Through the Body 10:15 - Four Reasons It Reads Falsely Low 12:27 - Malabsorption and the Input-Output Gap 13:43 - Four Reasons It Reads Falsely High 16:52 - Inflamed and Overweight: The 40% Distortion 18:15 - Rethinking the National Deficiency Data 19:07 - There's No Such Thing as Bad Data 20:01 - Biology, Ethnicity, and Genetics 21:24 - Total vs. Free Vitamin D 23:20 - How to Actually Read the Marker 25:13 - The Gap Is Real: 74% of Athletes Fall Short 26:24 - How Often to Test, and Why Season to Season 30:16 - The 500,000 IU Study: When More Backfires 32:19 - Supplementing People Who Are Already Fine 34:38 - Where the Real Wins Come From 36:04 - Why He Lowered His Target to 40 38:38 - You Can't Use Vitamin D Without Magnesium 40:10 - The Right Number: 40 to 80 41:06 - Your Four-Move Game Plan 44:19 - Don't Just Read the Number Don't forget to go to the show notes page to pick up the slides and resources: https://www.vitalityblueprint.com/vitality-unlocked/vitality-unlocked-episode-8-the-vitamin-d-truth For deeper dives into high-performance health, check out the Vitality Encyclopedia. https://www.vitalityblueprint.com/encyclopedia Contact us at hello@vitalityblueprint.com Visit our website to learn more vitalityblueprint.com Stay connected: Instagram /vitality_blueprint X /Vitality_BP Facebook LinkedIn /vitality-blueprint This podcast is hosted by Dan Garner in his role as founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Vitality Blueprint. The Magnesium Blind Spot

Magnesium is one of the largest unaddressed constraints on human performance, and almost nobody is measuring it correctly. In this episode, Vitality Blueprint Chief Innovation Officer Dan Garner dismantles the single most misleading marker in standard blood work: serum magnesium. Your lab says your magnesium is normal, and it almost certainly is not. Dan walks through the global deficiency data (2.4 billion people short on intake, 22% of elite Olympic athletes clinically deficient) and explains why serum, which represents just 1% of the body's magnesium, defends survival at the expense of optimal function and misses true deficiency by years. From there, Dan delivers the playbook: the two tests that actually reveal magnesium status (RBC magnesium and the calcium-to-magnesium ratio), the targets to hit, and why organ-specific supplement marketing is a waste of money. He ties magnesium to ATP production, deep sleep, hormone output, stress resilience, mood, vitamin D activation, and all-cause mortality, then uses the theory of constraints to show how correcting one root deficiency can resolve a dozen downstream symptoms at once. Measure it, correct it, receive the gains. This podcast is hosted by Dan Garner in his role as founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Vitality Blueprint. Resilience Redefined

The term "resilience" has been too vague for too long. What's vague cannot be defined. What cannot be defined cannot be measured. And what cannot be measured cannot be objectively improved. It’s time to change that and set the record straight. This deep dive into the physiology behind stress and resilience provides clear definitions of what resilience is, how to measure it, the key biomarkers, and methods for building lasting resilience. Dan also details the case for skeletal muscle as one of the most important organ systems to support both emotional and physical resilience, now and with age.
