Brick - 2005 (review)
In another installment for Noir-vember, tonight's episode is a review of Brick - an amazing neo-noir film from 2005 that stays true to classic noir, but with a unique take on the genre as it centers around high school students. While it might seem a bit silly to think of high school students in a noir film, Rian Johnson's masterful script and direction bring you into the world that he created in a way that makes even the most absurd aspects seem completely natural. Blood Rage - 1987 (review)
Thanksgiving - the time of turkey, football, and time with family...but, not really the time for themed movies. While there are plenty of other holidays that also have a shortage of movies, Thanksgiving feels especially abandoned. Maybe it's just because it is sandwiched between the heavy hitters of Halloween and Christmas (of which there is a plethora of themed holiday movies), so the lack of Thanksgiving movies is more noticeable in comparison. Maybe it's because most of the themes that would be covered in Thanksgiving movies are covered by Halloween and Christmas (e.g. autumn, family, food). But, because there isn't an abundance of Thanksgiving movies in which to get lost, that does tend to mean that the Thanksgiving movies you do see will be more memorable. And there are few that are more memorable than Blood Rage (a.k.a. Slasher, a.k.a. Nightmare at Shadow Woods)! Despite appearing laughably bad on the surface at times, this blood-soaked slasher has a surprising amount of technical proficiency and psychological underpinnings - so much so, that the majority of this episode actually focuses on the technical components of this film and how deceptively amazing they are! Blood Rage became an instant Thanksgiving tradition of mine when I saw it for the first time last year - and I highly recommend that it become one of your traditions as well (if you are a fan of horror movies, that is)! Touch of Evil - 1958 (review)
There is no shortage of Halloween/horror movies for October, nor is there a shortage of Christmas movies for December. But what does one watch during November?? (I mean, aside from Christmas movies, of course...Christmas season - or whatever holiday you celebrate...we are keenly aware of the fact that there are plenty of other holidays celebrated by countless other people of different faiths, beyond Christmas - totally starts as soon as you call it a night for Halloween). Aside from the very few Thanksgiving movies (and all the Christmas movies), November is for film noir!! Inspired by Central Cinema, Eric and I will be doing a couple film noir reviews during the month of November - or, more accurately, Noir-vember!! First up is a masterpiece that infuses iconic film noir stylings with social commentary that is still relevant today, Touch of Evil (which you can totally catch at Central Cinema this week)!! The Nightmare Before Christmas - 1993 (review)
Aaaaaaaand, we're back!! We took a very short break after finishing up 60 Days of Halloween, but we just couldn't stay away for long! And what better way to get back into the swing of things than the perfect movie to bridge the ending of Halloween season and the start of the Christmas season - The Nightmare Before Christmas!! Now that 60 Days of Halloween is over, we will not be putting out a daily podcast. However, we are going to do our best to put out a weekly episode. Sometimes these episodes will be reviews, sometimes they will be deeper analysis episodes, and sometimes they will be more of just general discussions about a certain topic - but they will almost always be centered around movies (there will, occasionally, be episodes that are not directly related to movies). Knoxville Horror Film Festival - Interviews
The first of three episodes for the final day of 60 Days of Halloween for 2018 is a continuation of our coverage from the Knoxville Horror Film Festival. While we recorded our reviews and some of our experiences each day immediately following the film festival, there was so much more that made KHFF an amazing film festival! One of the things that makes it so great is being able to actually meet and talk to the various directors, writers, actors/actresses, and special guests who share in a love of horror movies! And while I wasn't able to have a chance to talk to everyone that I wanted to, I am extremely grateful that I was able to talk to Eric Pennycoff (writer/director of Sadistic Intentions), Jay Kay (host of Horror Happens Radio Show), Anthony Cousins (writer/director of The Bloody Ballad of Squirt Reynolds), Brian Lonano (writer/director of BFF Girls and Gwilliam), and Elric Kane (co-host of Shock Waves Podcast) about what scares them, what movies they put in a week devoted to their fear, and what movies they recommend on Halloween for horror fans and non-horror fans alike! Day 59 in 60 Days of Halloween closes out Fear of Being a Bad Horror Movie Geek Week, in which Eric and I admit major gaps in our horror knowledge and watch iconic horror movies that we hate to admit that we have never seen before. While this fear is certainly drastically different in tone from the rest of the weeks so far (and definitely more tongue-in-cheek in terms of discussing "real" fears) it is still genuine...ish. One Cut of the Dead - 2017 (review)
While still technically night 57 in 60 Days of Halloween, tonight's episode is a "bonus episode" of sorts, in the sense that it is not part of Fear of Being a Bad Horror Movie Geek Week. Tonight's episode is a review of One Cut of the Dead, which I saw at the Frightening Ass Film Festival in Chattanooga, TN. Since I wasn't able to make it to the entire film fest, I was initially just going to talk about whatever I was able to see during the 60 day retrospective that Eric and I will be doing to close out this year's 60 Days of Halloween. However, I loved One Cut of the Dead so much that I couldn't wait to talk about it!! If you live near Chattanooga and are able to make it to the Frightening Ass Film Fest tomorrow (technical, today)...Sunday, 10/28...I absolutely recommend doing so! There is an amazing line-up of films, including a secret screening that you do NOT want to miss! Trust me!
