Episode 50: The Iron Paradox: Iron, Thyroid Health, and Ferroptosis

Send us Fan Mail Thyroid Talk with Dr. Angela Mazza, DO Show Notes Episode 50; Recorded: August 8, 2026 The Iron Paradox: Iron, Thyroid Health, and Ferroptosis Host: Dr. Angela Mazza, DO Co-host: Dawn Sheffield I’m Dr. Angela Mazza, D.O., a thyroid, endocrine, and metabolism specialist with a private practice in Central Florida. My goal for this podcast is to define and demystify the thyroid gland, and thyroid-related medical conditions. By providing information in an easy-to-understand format, we hope to help patients better understand the ways in which their bodies work, and to help them thrive. My goal is to help us live more fulfilling lives by taking control of our health, to feel our best. I do this podcast to provide life-saving education and encourage patients to see a doctor in time to prevent or minimize damage. That’s deeply fulfilling. I enjoy helping folks understand how all aspects of their lives are tied to both thyroid and overall health. That’s why I went into endocrinology. It’s a medical art that combines science with the study of our lives—and all that they encompass. Here’s some of what we covered in episode 50, not necessarily in this order: · Iron is involved in some of the most fundamental processes in human physiology. · What is ferroptosis? Is it science fiction--or science fact? · Iron may play a big role in inflammation, oxidative stress, aging biology, & longevity. · Iron is an essential mineral that the body requires for survival. · Iron helps us form hemoglobin--the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. · When iron levels are inadequate, cells may struggle to produce energy efficiently. · Symptoms of low iron may mimic those of hypo--that is, low--thyroid. · Iron deficiency can directly affect thyroid physiology itself. · Who tends to be most vulnerable to iron deficiency? · And best of all we learned that we CAN impact our thyroid health!
