Why Your Body Won't Let Go

Have you ever stretched the same tight muscle again and again, only to find that the tension keeps coming back? Perhaps the question isn't simply, “How do I get this muscle to let go?” Perhaps there's a much bigger conversation happening. In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley continues our exploration of fascia by looking beyond individual muscles and tissues to something far more fascinating: the interconnected communication taking place throughout your entire body. Your body isn't a collection of separate parts. Your brain, nervous system, muscles, fascia, sensory systems and movement patterns are continually communicating and adapting. Much of this happens automatically, without you consciously thinking about it. Think of your body like an orchestra. If you listened only to the violin, you'd miss the richness of the cello, piano, percussion and every other instrument contributing to the music. Your body is much the same. When an area continually feels tight, restricted or reluctant to “let go,” focusing solely on that muscle or the fascia may mean we're listening to just one instrument — while missing the rest of the orchestra. In This Episode, You'll Explore: Why your body should be viewed as an interconnected system rather than separate parts How your brain, nervous system, muscles and fascia communicate Why persistent tightness may involve more than the area where you actually feel the tension Why repeatedly stretching a tight muscle doesn't always create lasting change How the nervous system influences patterns of muscle tension and movement The role of sensory information in how your brain organises movement How neuroplasticity gives the nervous system opportunities to learn and adapt Why protective patterns aren't necessarily something we need to fight against How curiosity about your whole system can change the way you approach your body A Different Question to Ask Your Body Rather than always asking: “How do I make this tight area release?” Try becoming curious about: “Why might my system be maintaining this pattern?” And perhaps even more importantly: “What new information could I give my brain and nervous system to help create another possibility?” This subtle shift takes us away from battling with the body and towards understanding the extraordinary communication happening within it. Somatic in September Is Coming This episode also creates the bridge into Somatic in September, where we'll begin exploring the body from a much broader perspective. We'll look beyond fascia alone and explore the fascinating relationship between fascia, the nervous system, protective reflexes, sensory awareness, movement and neuroplasticity — and how these systems work together to influence how you move, feel and respond to life. Because sometimes the most interesting question isn't: “Why won't my body let go?” It's: “What is my body trying to tell me?” Continue Your Total Somatics Journey If this episode gives you an aha moment, subscribe to The Total Somatics Show and join me throughout Somatic in September. Everyone’s Talking About Fascia — But What Are We Missing?

Fascia seems to be everywhere at the moment. Social media is talking about it, movement professionals are exploring it, and more people are becoming curious about the role this remarkable connective tissue plays in how we move and feel. But what exactly is fascia — and are we in danger of looking at it in isolation? In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley introduces you to the fascinating world of fascia and, importantly, places it within the bigger picture of your body. Fascia isn't simply something to stretch, release or work on. It exists as part of an extraordinarily interconnected system involving your brain, nervous system, muscles, movement patterns and sensory experiences. So rather than simply asking, “How can I release this tight area?”, perhaps there are more interesting questions we can begin asking: Why is my nervous system maintaining this pattern? What sensory information is my brain receiving? And how can I help my brain and body discover new possibilities through neuroplasticity and somatic movement? In this episode, you'll discover: What fascia is and why it has suddenly become such a popular topic Why fascia shouldn't be viewed as a separate system within the body The relationship between fascia, muscles, the brain and nervous system Why stress can influence muscle tone and how we experience tension Why repeatedly targeting a “tight” area may not always address the bigger picture How sensory awareness and neuroplasticity fit into the Total Somatics approach Why understanding the body as an interconnected system can change the way we approach movement, tension and resilience This episode also begins our journey towards Somatic in September, when we'll explore these connections more deeply and discover practical ways to support greater awareness, adaptability and ease within the body. Rather than chasing the latest fascia trend, let's become curious about something much bigger: What if fascia is only one part of an incredible conversation taking place throughout your body every moment of every day? Continue Your Somatic Journey If you're enjoying The Total Somatics Show, subscribe so you don't miss the upcoming Somatic in September episodes. Share this episode with someone who has been hearing all the buzz about fascia and would enjoy understanding the bigger picture. And if you'd like step-by-step guidance to help you develop your own somatic practice, explore the Total Somatics Online Membership, where you can continue putting these principles into practice. Did Your Childhood Teach You to Survive Instead of Connect? - The Total Somatics Show

Have you ever wondered why you overthink, stay busy, struggle to switch off, or feel emotionally exhausted—even when life seems to be going well? What if these aren't personality traits at all? What if they're learned survival patterns? In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley explores how our early life experiences shape the way our nervous system responds to the world around us. Through a Total Somatics lens, you'll discover how emotionally unpredictable environments can teach us to survive rather than truly connect—with ourselves, our bodies and those around us. This isn't about blaming parents or caregivers. Most people do the very best they can with what they know. Instead, this episode is about developing awareness, understanding your body's protective responses, and recognising that the patterns you learned can also be changed. In this episode you'll discover: Why many of our stress responses begin long before adulthood. How emotionally dysregulated environments influence the developing nervous system. The difference between surviving and truly feeling safe. Why you may find yourself constantly busy, people-pleasing or always "pushing through." How stress can show up as muscle tension, posture changes, shallow breathing and persistent fatigue. Why your body often reacts before your mind has time to think. How chronic survival patterns can influence anxiety, relationships, confidence, work and everyday life. Why awareness is the first step towards lasting change. You'll also learn why many of the habits we judge ourselves for were once intelligent survival strategies—and why your body deserves compassion, not criticism. Questions to reflect on As you listen, take a moment to ask yourself: What does my body do first when I feel stressed? Do my shoulders rise? Does my jaw tighten? Do I hold my breath? Do I keep pushing through? Or do I quietly pull away? Am I living in my head more than I'm living in my body? These small moments of awareness are often where meaningful change begins. Through a Total Somatics lens One of the key messages in this episode is that your nervous system isn't broken. It adapted. Many of the patterns that now leave you feeling anxious, disconnected or exhausted were once your body's way of helping you navigate uncertainty. The wonderful news is that the brain and body remain adaptable throughout life. Through neuroplasticity and greater body awareness, it's possible to update old patterns and create new ways of responding that feel calmer, more connected and more resilient. Are You Living or Just Surviving? - The Total Somatics Show

Welcome to the very first episode of The Total Somatics Show. Have you ever wondered why certain people, situations or even news headlines can affect you so deeply? Why do some people seem calm on the outside, yet feel constantly on edge within? And what if the way you respond today isn't really about today at all? In this opening episode, Heidi explores one of the most important concepts in Total Somatics: the difference between living and surviving. Through a Total Somatics lens, you'll discover how your nervous system, posture, breathing, muscle tension and everyday behaviours may all be reflecting learned survival patterns that began years—even decades—ago. This isn't about blame. It's about understanding. When we understand our patterns, we can begin to change them. In this episode, you'll discover: Why many people live from survival mode without realising it. How emotionally unpredictable environments can shape the nervous system. The connection between stress, muscle tension, posture and breathing. Why you may spend more time in your head than connected to your body. How high-functioning anxiety, people-pleasing, overworking or withdrawing can all be different expressions of the same underlying survival response. Why awareness is the first step towards meaningful and lasting change. How neuroplasticity gives us hope that learned patterns can be updated. Heidi also shares personal reflections about resilience, life experiences and the lessons that have shaped both her clinical practice and her outlook on life. Throughout this podcast, you'll hear practical insights drawn from more than 25 years of clinical experience, combined with conversations around emotional intelligence, relationships, business, resilience, mindset and the human experience—all explored through a Total Somatics perspective. A question to reflect on What does your body do first when you feel stressed? Do your shoulders rise? Does your jaw tighten? Do you hold your breath? Do you keep pushing through... or quietly pull away? Sometimes our body tells us the truth long before our mind catches up. Join the conversation The Total Somatics Show is something we're building together. I'd love to hear: Your questions Your life lessons Your challenges Your stories Topics you'd love explored on future episodes 📧 Email your questions to: questions@totalsomatics.com You can also send a voice message via Facebook Messenger by searching for Heidi Hadley, or send a written message that may be featured in a future Ask Heidi segment. The Hidden Cost of Always Being Strong

Are you the person everyone relies on? The one who keeps the family together, supports everyone else, says "I'm fine" even when you're exhausted, and rarely asks for help. In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley explores the hidden physiological cost of constantly being the strong one. Discover how chronic stress, high-functioning anxiety, perfectionism and years of pushing through can leave the nervous system in a prolonged state of protection, contributing to persistent muscle tension, widespread pain, fatigue and reduced resilience. You'll also learn why conditions such as fibromyalgia, polymyalgia, persistent muscle pain and chronic stiffness deserve more than symptom management alone. By understanding the relationship between your nervous system, brain, fascia and muscles, you'll discover why restoring sensory awareness through Clinical Somatics and pandiculation offers a practical, evidence-informed approach to supporting long-term neuromyofascial health. In This Episode You'll Discover ✔ Why always being the "strong one" can take a hidden toll on your body ✔ The connection between chronic stress, muscle tension and nervous system regulation ✔ What high-functioning anxiety looks like beneath the surface ✔ Why constantly pushing through fatigue may keep your body in protective patterns ✔ The relationship between persistent muscle guarding, widespread pain and movement quality ✔ Why pain isn't always a sign of tissue damage ✔ How Clinical Somatics and pandiculation help restore healthy sensory motor control ✔ Practical ways to build resilience without sacrificing your health Key Takeaways • Strength isn't measured by how much you carry—it's also knowing when your body needs support. • Persistent muscle tension often reflects protective neurological patterns rather than simply tight muscles. • Living in a constant state of responsibility can reduce your nervous system's opportunity to recover and regulate. • Improving body awareness through pandiculation helps restore communication between your brain and muscles, reducing unnecessary muscle holding. • Lasting wellbeing comes from balancing resilience with recovery. Why Stretching Isn't Releasing Your Muscle Tension & Addressing Tendon Health

What if the advice you've been given for years about stretching is only part of the story? Millions of people stretch every day hoping to reduce pain, prevent injury and improve flexibility. Yet despite their best efforts, muscle tension returns, injuries keep recurring and movement often feels stiff and restricted. In this episode of the Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley explores why stretching alone cannot restore healthy neuromyofascial function. Discover how a mismatch between flaccid, underactive muscles and stiff, overloaded tendons can increase your risk of injury, and why modern pain science, movement science and fascial science are transforming the way we understand healthy movement. You'll also discover why pandiculation—our innate sensory motor reset mechanism—is emerging as one of the most effective ways to improve muscle function, restore movement quality and support long-term tendon health. In this episode you'll discover: ✔ Why muscle flexibility alone doesn't guarantee healthy movement ✔ The important relationship between muscles, tendons and fascia ✔ How tendon stiffness can increase injury risk ✔ Why repeatedly stretching tight muscles often produces only temporary results ✔ The difference between passive stretching and active neuromuscular control ✔ How pandiculation restores communication between your brain and muscles ✔ Why modern pain science, movement science and fascial science all support improving sensory motor control ✔ Practical ways to move more efficiently, reduce recurring tension and build long-term resilience Key Takeaways • Healthy movement depends on communication between the brain, muscles, fascia and tendons—not simply increasing flexibility. • A muscle may appear "tight" because of altered neurological control rather than because it is physically short. • When muscles become inhibited or lose efficient control, tendons may compensate by becoming excessively stiff, increasing mechanical load and injury risk. • Improving sensory awareness and motor control through pandiculation helps restore balanced movement and healthier force distribution throughout the body. • Better movement quality—not simply more movement—is the key to long-term mobility and injury prevention. Why You Can't Think Your Way Out of Stress

Have you ever wondered why you understand your stress, know where it comes from, and have tried all the mindset strategies—yet your body still feels tense, anxious, exhausted, or stuck? The reason may be simpler than you think. Stress and trauma are not just experiences of the mind. They are experiences of the entire nervous system. In this episode of the Somatic Movement & Mindset Podcast, Heidi Hadley explores why lasting change requires more than positive thinking and mental strategies alone. While awareness and insight are valuable, the body often continues to hold patterns of protection long after the stressful event has passed. You'll discover how chronic stress and trauma can become expressed through muscular tension, restricted breathing, altered posture, pain, fatigue, hypervigilance, and emotional reactivity. Most importantly, you'll learn how Clinical Somatics and pandiculation help retrain the brain and nervous system, allowing your body to release habitual tension and rediscover a greater sense of ease and safety. In This Episode, You'll Learn: ✔ Why stress and trauma are embodied experiences, not just mental experiences ✔ How the nervous system prioritises protection and survival ✔ Why understanding your stress doesn't automatically resolve it ✔ The connection between chronic tension, posture, breathing, and emotional wellbeing ✔ How unconscious muscular contraction can become a long-term habit ✔ The role of neuroplasticity in creating lasting change ✔ Why Clinical Somatics works directly with the brain-body connection ✔ How pandiculation helps release tension and restore voluntary control of muscles ✔ Practical ways to improve nervous system regulation and resilience Key Takeaways ✨ You cannot always think your way out of a nervous system response. ✨ Chronic stress and trauma often create patterns of tension that become stored as habitual responses within the body. ✨ The body and brain are constantly communicating through sensation, movement, posture, breathing, and emotion. ✨ Clinical Somatics helps improve awareness and restore communication between the brain and body. ✨ Pandiculation works directly with the sensory motor cortex to help release chronic muscular tension and improve movement efficiency. ✨ Through neuroplasticity, the nervous system can learn new patterns of safety, ease, and resilience. ✨ Lasting transformation happens when we include the body in the healing process. Why Your Core Exercises Aren't Fixing Your Back Pain

Have you been told to strengthen your core to fix your back pain, yet despite doing countless planks, crunches, and core workouts, your discomfort keeps returning? You're not alone. In this episode of the Somatic Movement & Mindset Podcast, Heidi Hadley explores a hidden reason why traditional core exercises may not be delivering the results you expected. While core strength has become one of the most common recommendations for back pain, many people are unknowingly developing chronic muscular bracing and co-contraction—a state where muscles remain excessively contracted, limiting mobility, reducing shock absorbency, and increasing tension throughout the body. Discover why stability and rigidity are not the same thing, and how true movement health depends on your ability to both contract and release. In This Episode You'll Discover: ✅ Why strengthening your core isn't always the answer to back pain ✅ What co-contraction is and how it develops ✅ How excessive abdominal bracing can reduce mobility and movement efficiency ✅ Why chronic muscle tension increases compressive forces on the spine ✅ The relationship between breathing, posture, and back pain ✅ How reduced shock absorbency affects your body from head to toe ✅ Why stiffness is often mistaken for stability ✅ The role of the nervous system in chronic tension and recurring pain ✅ Why flexibility alone isn't the solution ✅ How pandiculation helps retrain the brain and release chronic muscular holding patterns Understanding Co-Contraction Your body is designed to move with adaptability, efficiency, and ease. However, when muscles around a joint contract simultaneously and remain partially engaged for prolonged periods, movement becomes restricted. This phenomenon, known as co-contraction, is often driven by stress, injury, fear of movement, repetitive habits, or well-intentioned advice to constantly "engage your core." Over time, this can lead to: Increased muscle fatigue Reduced mobility Restricted breathing Increased spinal compression Poor shock absorption Persistent pain and stiffness The result? A body that feels tight, guarded, and less capable of moving naturally. Why More Tension Isn't More Stability Many people associate a strong core with a healthy back. But true stability comes from adaptability—not rigidity. A healthy neuromuscular system allows muscles to contract when needed and release when they're not. When muscles remain switched on unnecessarily, the nervous system loses efficiency, movement becomes less fluid, and pain often persists. A Different Approach: Pandiculation Pandiculation is a natural process that works directly with the brain and nervous system to help restore voluntary control of muscles. Rather than forcing muscles to lengthen temporarily, pandiculation helps reset chronic tension patterns by improving communication between the brain and body. This can help: Reduce chronic muscle tension Improve mobility Enhance posture Support better breathing mechanics Improve shock absorbency Create more efficient movement patterns Reduce recurring pain and discomfort Key Takeaway The goal isn't simply to build a stronger core. The goal is to create a body that can respond appropriately to the demands placed upon it—contracting when necessary and releasing when possible. When we learn to reduce unnecessary muscular bracing and improve nervous system regulation, we create the conditions for more comfortable, efficient movement. Ready to Learn More? What If Your Pain Is Trying to Tell You Something?

Have you ever wondered why pain keeps returning, even after you've tried everything you can think of? Perhaps you've stretched, exercised, rested, had treatments, or sought professional advice, yet the discomfort continues to linger. In this episode of the Somatic Movement & Mindset Podcast, Heidi Hadley explores a different perspective on chronic pain through the lens of neuroscience, neuroplasticity, and somatic science. You'll discover why pain and damage are not always the same thing, how the nervous system can become overprotective, and why understanding your body's messages may be one of the most important steps towards lasting change. Heidi explains how chronic muscle tension, stress, and protective movement patterns can influence the way we experience pain, and why developing greater body awareness can help us work with the body rather than against it. This episode is designed to help you view your body with more curiosity, compassion, and understanding, while providing practical insights into how the brain and nervous system influence movement, tension, and discomfort. In This Episode You'll Learn: ✔ Why pain is an output of the brain and nervous system ✔ The difference between acute pain and chronic pain ✔ How stress and protective patterns can contribute to ongoing discomfort ✔ What neuroplasticity is and how it influences pain patterns ✔ The concept of sensory motor amnesia and why tension can become your "normal" ✔ Why stretching alone may not address recurring muscular tension ✔ How pandiculation helps improve brain to muscle communication ✔ The importance of curiosity, awareness, and nervous system regulation in supporting wellbeing Key Takeaway Your body is not working against you. In this episode, Heidi explores how chronic stress can influence your posture, breathing, movement, pain levels, emotional wellbeing, sleep quality and overall health. Boundaries That Protect Your Brain, Body & Energy

Boundaries are not walls. They are intelligent, nervous system informed signals that protect your brain, support your body, and preserve your energy. In this episode, Heidi explores why boundaries are essential for mental health, emotional wellbeing, physical health, and long term resilience. You will discover how poor boundaries quietly dysregulate the nervous system, increase pain, fatigue, overwhelm, and emotional burnout and how embodied boundaries help restore safety, clarity, and vitality. This is not about willpower or saying no harder. It is about understanding how the brain and body respond to stress, pressure, and overstimulation and learning how to regulate from the inside out. 🧠 What Heidi Explores in This Episode How boundaries protect the brain from chronic stress and cognitive overload The link between weak boundaries and nervous system dysregulation Why the body holds stress when boundaries are repeatedly crossed How emotional and energetic boundaries influence pain, posture, fatigue, and sleep The difference between reactive boundaries and regulated boundaries 🌿 Boundaries and the Brain Your brain is constantly scanning for safety. When boundaries are unclear or repeatedly violated, the stress response stays switched on. Over time, this impacts focus, memory, emotional regulation, and decision making. Clear boundaries help: Reduce anxiety and overwhelm Improve mental clarity and focus Support emotional regulation Lower stress hormone output 🌱 Boundaries and the Body The body often carries the cost of poor boundaries. Chronic tension, pain, fatigue, and inflammation can be signals that the nervous system is overloaded. Healthy boundaries support: Reduced muscle tension and pain Improved posture and breathing Better sleep and recovery Increased physical resilience ✨ Energetic Boundaries and Wellbeing Energetic boundaries are not abstract. They are felt experiences of knowing when something is too much. When we ignore these signals, exhaustion and burnout follow. Strong energetic boundaries allow you to: Preserve emotional energy Reduce people pleasing patterns Stay grounded in challenging environments Feel safe in your body and mind 🔑 Key Takeaways to Reflect On Boundaries are a form of nervous system regulation You cannot think your way into healthy boundaries The body often shows boundary fatigue before the mind notices Regulated boundaries feel calm, not defensive Awareness creates choice and change 🎤 Watch the TEDx Talk This episode connects deeply with my TEDx talk on nervous system regulation and embodied change, presented through TEDx. 👉 CLICK THE LINK BELOW to watch my TEDx talk CLICK THIS LINK: https://youtu.be/hfOe-oiHWDU?si=fiDAiEptLYCutUlH If it resonates, please Like, Share, and Comment to help this message reach more people who need it. 🌿 Join The Total Somatics Membership If you want to build boundaries that truly protect your brain, body, and energy, I warmly invite you to join The Total Somatics Membership. Pandiculation: The Missing Link for Muscles, Fascia & Joints

In this episode of Somatic Movement and Mindset, Heidi Hadley explores why pandiculation is the missing link in how we care for muscles, fascia, and joints, and why stretching alone often falls short. If you have ever stretched consistently yet still felt tight, restricted, or in pain, this episode will help you understand why. Heidi unpacks the science of how the nervous system controls muscle tone, how fascia adapts to habitual tension, and why joints rely on intelligent movement rather than force. Pandiculation is not about pulling or forcing tissues. It is about restoring communication between the brain and body so movement becomes easier, lighter, and more efficient. 🧠 What Heidi Covers in This Episode Muscles and the Nervous System Muscles do not truly relax through stretching. Muscle tone is regulated by the brain and nervous system. Pandiculation actively resets this control, restoring voluntary movement and reducing unconscious holding. Fascia and Adaptive Tension Fascia responds to how we move and how we habitually hold ourselves. Stretching can temporarily lengthen tissue but does not retrain the brain. Pandiculation improves hydration, glide, and elasticity by changing neural input rather than forcing tissue change. Joints and Intelligent Movement Healthy joints depend on balanced muscular control and responsive fascia. Pandiculation improves joint health by reducing compression, improving shock absorbency, and restoring smooth coordinated movement. Why Pandiculation Is Superior to Stretching Stretching pulls on tissue and often activates protective reflexes that create more tension. Pandiculation works with the nervous system, improving awareness, control, and long term change rather than short lived relief. ✨ Key Takeaways Lasting change happens through the brain, not force Fascia responds best to slow, mindful movement Joints thrive on coordination, not compression Pandiculation restores control rather than creating dependence Awareness and intention are more powerful than effort 🎤 Watch the TEDx Talk This episode connects directly with Heidi Hadley's TEDx talk exploring pandiculation as a natural solution for chronic pain and discomfort, presented through TEDx.
