Your host, Mike King, brings over four decades of experience in criminal justice and behavioral analysis. A retired law enforcement executive, Mike served as Chief of Staff to Utah Attorney General Jan Graham and Weber County Attorney Reed M. Richards. He began his career at the Ogden Police Department, where he worked patrol, motor enforcement, and SWAT before moving into investigations where he led task forces that hunted serial predators and violent offenders.

Mike’s expertise earned him national recognition. He served as co-chair of the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) National Advisory Board, directed UTAP, the Utah Criminal Tracking and Analysis Project, and supported intelligence operations during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

After retiring from public service, Mike joined the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), where he spent years consulting with police agencies around the globe on intelligence gathering, emergency communications, and major event management. In 2024, he retired again, this time to focus full-time on Profiling Evil and its growing community of true crime investigators, students, and enthusiasts.

Mike is an internationally recognized speaker, trainer, and adjunct professor, as well as a visiting scholar at multiple universities. He’s authored several acclaimed works on crime and human behavior, including:

The defense says a loving mother was overtaken by postpartum psychosis after months of deteriorating mental health and fragmented treatment. The Commonwealth agrees that Lindsay was struggling, but argues that her actions on January 24, 2023—sending Patrick away, checking the travel time, adding another errand, speaking calmly during his phone call and acting as soon as he left—show that she understood what she was doing and knew it was wrong. The Commonwealth saved one of its most direct challenges to Lindsay Clancy’s account for its final rebuttal witness. Dr. Gregory Saathoff, a forensic psychiatrist who has worked with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit for three decades, compared what Lindsay told him with her medical records, digital searches, Patrick Clancy’s account and the physical sequence of events on the day she killed her children. His testimony does not negate the serious mental illness described throughout this trial, and it does not decide the case by itself. It does, however, put the central legal question in plain view: did Lindsay’s illness leave her unable to understand that killing Cora, Dawson and Callan was wrong, or do the planning, timing, choices and later inconsistencies show that she still understood what she was doing? Children Cannot Be Footnotes. What the Lindsay Clancy Jury Must Decide | Profiling Evil
The Lindsay Clancy trial is difficult to watch because nearly every discussion has centered on Lindsay’s mental health, her treatment and whether she was experiencing psychosis. Meanwhile, her children, Cora, Dawson and Callan are feeling like footnotes in the case, even though they are the reason everyone is in that courtroom. I think we can recognize that Lindsay was seriously ill without losing sight of what happened to her children. This episode looks at the Commonwealth’s claim that she deliberately created time alone with them, what the defense says psychosis did to her ability to understand and control her actions, why this case did not end with a negotiated resolution, and what choices the jury may actually have when deliberations begin. I also want to compare Clancy’s case with John du Pont, James Holmes, Jeffrey Dahmer and Jared Lee Loughner, all of whom had serious mental-health problems but were still held criminally responsible. That does not make these cases equal, and it does not settle Lindsay’s case. It helps explain why proof of mental illness is only part of what this jury must consider. We also need to remember that the jurors heard the 911 call and saw medical evidence that people watching remotely did not. Why Some Women Fall for Convicted Killers: Chris Watts, Luigi Mangione and Richard Ramirez
In this episode of Profiling Evil, I sit down with clinical and forensic psychologist Dr. Joni Johnston to examine why some women pursue relationships with men responsible for notorious killings. We begin with Chris Watts, who is serving life without parole for murdering his pregnant wife, Shanann Watts, their daughters, Bella and Celeste, and their unborn son, Nico. With reports that Watts may now want to marry a woman who has repeatedly visited him in prison, we discuss what someone may gain from a relationship built around distance, controlled contact and the belief that she alone understands the man behind the crime. Dr. Johnston explains the limited research surrounding hybristophilia, the term commonly used for attraction to people who commit serious crimes. We discuss rescue fantasies, religious redemption, the desire to feel uniquely important, denial of overwhelming evidence and the emotional appeal of a relationship in which everyday responsibilities are largely absent. We also examine how an incarcerated offender can create intimacy through letters, telephone calls and carefully controlled stories while the person outside supplies money, attention, loyalty and a connection to the free world. We compare Watts with Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker, who received attention from numerous women while awaiting execution and eventually married Doreen Lioy. Her refusal to accept the evidence against him lasted for years before DNA linked Ramirez to the killing of nine-year-old Mei Leung. We also discuss Luigi Mangione and the public support, romantic attention and substantial defense contributions he received after the killing of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson. Mangione has now pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges resulting in Thompson’s death and admitted in court that he shot him; the separate New York murder prosecution is currently being challenged by his attorneys. (Associated Press) This conversation is not about assuming that every person who writes to an inmate has the same motivation. It is about understanding the different psychological needs that can make these relationships attractive, the ways imprisoned offenders may groom or manipulate people outside and the difference between a sincere claim of change and years of accountable behavior. About 20 minutes later, investigators believe she made it to her red Mazda Miata, just steps from her apartment door, where evidence suggested she was attacked and abducted. Her personal items were found scattered near the car, including shoes, hairspray, a hairdryer, and a bent key. Jodi has never been found. Who Sees the Risk? What Men and Women Notice Before Danger | Profiling Evil
Why can two people walk through the same place and notice completely different warning signs? In this special Profiling Evil episode, we’ll draw on lessons from law-enforcement and behavioral-analysis alongside a fascinating peer-reviewed study by Robert A. Chaney, PhD, Alyssa Baer, MPH, and L. Ida Tovar, MPH. The researchers asked 571 college students to examine campus walking environments under changing conditions of lighting and entrapment. Women tended to focus more on bushes, darkness, and areas outside the path, while men tended to focus more directly on the path ahead. Those differences don’t tell us that one gender is naturally better at detecting danger, nor does the study measure actual victimization or predict who would avoid an attack. What it gives us is a useful way to think about our environment and the blind spots that increase our chances of being victimized. We’ll explore how offenders take advantage of location, situation and circumstances to get the upper hand on their intended victims and we’ll talk about how simple choices can lower exposure without surrendering your freedom. The Lindsay Clancy Trial: Can the State Win on Emotion? | Profiling Evil
Days seven and eight of the Lindsay Clancy trial brought the jury toxicology results, DNA findings, testimony from the children’s former nanny, friends and relatives, and deeply difficult medical evidence concerning the murders of Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy. In this episode, I explain what that testimony added to the prosecution’s case, what it may have handed to the defense, and why the emotional force of this trial may become as important as the legal arguments over criminal responsibility. I also examine a harder question of whether a public murder trial is the best available form of justice when nobody disputes who killed these three children, but the parties sharply disagree about whether their mother was legally responsible because of psychosis. Finally, I look at the decision to have two women prosecute this case and why it would be irresponsible to assume that female prosecutors, or female jurors re naturally less sympathetic to postpartum mental illness.
