Your host, Mike King, brings over four decades of experience in criminal justice and behavioral analysis. A retired law enforcement executive, Mike served as Chief of Staff to Utah Attorney General Jan Graham and Weber County Attorney Reed M. Richards. He began his career at the Ogden Police Department, where he worked patrol, motor enforcement, and SWAT before moving into investigations where he led task forces that hunted serial predators and violent offenders.

Mike’s expertise earned him national recognition. He served as co-chair of the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) National Advisory Board, directed UTAP, the Utah Criminal Tracking and Analysis Project, and supported intelligence operations during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

After retiring from public service, Mike joined the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), where he spent years consulting with police agencies around the globe on intelligence gathering, emergency communications, and major event management. In 2024, he retired again, this time to focus full-time on Profiling Evil and its growing community of true crime investigators, students, and enthusiasts.

Mike is an internationally recognized speaker, trainer, and adjunct professor, as well as a visiting scholar at multiple universities. He’s authored several acclaimed works on crime and human behavior, including:

MAPPING EVIL Episode 2: How Cults Control, The Spider's Web
In episode two of Mapping Evil, recorded in Australia with journalist Tori Shepherd, we pull apart the spider's web of cult control, starting with Mike's own case: the Zion Society, a polygamous doomsday cult operating in Ogden, Utah. It began when a woman walked into his office and said her cult was sexually abusing children. The spider at the center was Arvin Shreeve, a 61-year-old landscaper and self-proclaimed prophet who built his compound in plain sight, buying up houses in a closed community as they came for sale. Early GIS mapping tracked which homes the group was swallowing, house by house. When 70 officers finally hit those homes at once, 32 children went into protective custody and investigators uncovered thousands of counts of sexual assault. Twelve people went to prison, including Shreeve. We also cross the Pacific to Australia's most infamous cult, The Family under Anne Hamilton-Byrne, and to NXIVM, where Keith Raniere's self-help empire ended in a 120-year sentence. Through all three cases, Mike lays out what actually defines a cult: it's not the beliefs, it's the structure, everything pointed inward at the leader instead of outward at the people. MAPPING EVIL Episode 1: Route of All Evil
Welcome to Mapping Evil, the special 13-episode Profiling Evil series recorded in a studio in #Australia, where I'm joined by award-winning journalist #ToriShepherd. In this first episode we take on Robert Ben Rhoades, the truck stop killer, a sexual sadist who turned his big white 18-wheeler into a traveling torture chamber. Rhoades told one victim he'd been doing this for 15 years, and investigators believe they still haven't found them all. We walk through his victims, including young missionaries Patricia Candice Walsh and Douglas Zyskowski, and Nicole Tuttle, who found the courage to bail out of his truck in Houston with chains still hanging off her, leading to his arrest. Then the geography, because that's where this case was finally cracked. With more than 18,000 separate police departments in America and almost no information sharing in those days, Rhoades crossed jurisdictions faster than anyone could connect the dots, until Mike mapped his truck stop records, weigh stations and fuel stops against missing persons across the country. The pattern suggests anywhere from 50 to 300 victims. Caleb Flynn Steps into Hell on Earth | Profiling Evil
Caleb Flynn just stood before an Ohio judge to be sentenced for the murder of his wife Ashley, and for the first time in eight months, he opened his mouth. What came out was ten minutes of thank-you’s, tearful tributes to his own family, and sweeping declarations of faith, ending with a flat denial: "I did not kill my wife." Fynn’s statement avoids the brutal facts of the case: two bullets in the back of Ashley's head as she slept, a staged burglary that fooled no one, more than 107,000 texts to his mistress including the words "I need her to die," and a jury that needed just two hours to convict him on all nine counts.
