Outlawed

Beverly Gray & Jonas Swartz

In the wild west of abortion bans and restrictions, patients, families, and their doctors are being treated like outlaws. OB-Gyns and abortion care providers Bev and Jonas embrace the American tradition of fighting injustice by sharing their direct line to what’s actually happening in our homes and medical offices.

Each episode’s powerful stories, experts, and resources help us grasp the aftermath of outlawing healthcare and how to talk about it with the people you know. Even with Uncle Bob. Especially with Uncle Bob.

Brought to you by Dr. Beverly Gray, Dr. Jonas Swartz, produced by Stevie Manning.

    Making magic in dark times

Behind the bans and restrictions on abortion and trans healthcare is a desire to control bodily autonomy and enforce rigid gender roles. With colleagues who provide care to transgender patients being doxxed and threatened perhaps more than abortion care providers right now, Bev and Jonas sought the insight of the ACLU’s Chase Strangio, the first openly trans lawyer to argue in front of the Supreme Court. Chase illuminates our shared struggle, reminds us of the history of queer joy in the face of oppression, and offers inspiration to anyone who might be hesitant to stand up for their community in the public square. When reproductive justice becomes a thriller

You’ve probably heard podcaster and radio star Hillary Frank tell a story on This American Life or her podcast The Longest Shortest Time. But none quite like this one. Just in time for spooky season, Bev and Jonas talk to Frank about her new audiobook, Wed Locked, a thriller built on the pressures of women to smile through their pain. She talks to Bev and Jonas about the dynamics between couples in choosing reproductive healthcare, and the dangers of simply staying strong and powering through when doctors and those around us don’t see our suffering. No spoilers here, but Bev and Jonas got hooked as powerfully as a tenaculum does its job. Learn more about Hillary's book Wedlocked here. The Empress of Bright Ideas

Despite what it feels like when social media serves up an expensive cure-all for an ever growing list of symptoms, menopause shouldn’t be a secret to be discovered while doomscrolling in bed. Omisade Burney-Scott, Founder of the Black Girls Guide to Surviving Menopause, uses the power of narrative to envision a world where people are never alone on their journey: where your doctor, your friends, your family, and community awareness all play an important role. Bev and Jonas’s conversation with Omisade confirms that she is the “Empress of Bright Ideas” the world needs right now. We're a finalist for a Signal Award in the category of conversation starter! Menopause goes to Washington

Lawyer and author Jennifer Weiss-Wolf describes the experience of menopause as entering her “no f%#ks left to give era” and embracing the power many feel in this stage of life. As a public policy expert on reproductive health, she testified at the first congressional hearing dedicated to menopause in Washington, DC on September 16th. Bev and Jonas get the scoop on how she builds support for new legislation from woefully-misinformed congresspeople with patience and pragmatism. Her new book “When in Menopause: A User’s Manual and Citizen’s Guide” comes out on October 6th, and offers multiple paths to advocacy that match individual strengths. Abortion and the family doctor

Reproductive health care touches multiple decades and events in a patient’s lifetime. So why not get care from a provider who was there when you got your first period, sprained your ankle in college sports, or was there when you gave birth? Bev and Jonas talk with the amazing Dr. Robin Wallace about providing abortions as a family physician and why more medical specialties should do the same. Based on years practicing in multiple states before and after Dobbs, she helps untangle the complex web of policies and paperwork that make it harder for medical professionals to offer abortion to patients already coming to them for other care. Nobody should have pain

As Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi declares, no one should have pain with IUD insertion. In this wild and wildly instructive episode, Bev and Jonas break down the actual steps of the infamously painful procedure and then dive into solutions with Dr. Moayedi, an OB-Gyn whose reputation as a provider of the “Best IUD insertion in Texas” leads to a mini gameshow challenge to rate pain relief options. This conversation is a huge win for anyone who has or wants an intrauterine device for control of their reproductive health, especially patients who have ever felt gaslit by providers about their lived experience. More than just a pinch

It’s no wonder that the podcast The Retrievals was launched by true crime favorites Serial Productions and the NYT. As host Susan Burton tells Bev and Jonas on Outlawed, the first season of the hit show underscored how women’s pain in IVF treatments intersected with a criminal investigation. The original perpetrator was stopped, but what was uncovered about how pain is perceived and treated or ignored affects every aspect of reproductive healthcare. In this two episode series on pain with IUD insertion, Bev and Jonas make full use of Susan Burton’s investigative journalist’s practiced lens to examine the complex dynamics between doctor and patient, pain and the perception of pain, and how doctors and patients can use language and take actions together for patient comfort. Everything's bigger in Texas, even abortion bans (re-run from Season 1)

The stories out of Texas are numerous and heartbreaking. In our third episode of Outlawed, we’ll meet two people from Texas. One is a high-risk OB-gyn physician who cares for some of the sickest patients and pregnancies. She talks about the impact of the Texas abortion ban (SB8) and Dobbs on the healthcare she can provide people and explains why these laws lead to substandard care. The second person we will meet is Lisa, a patient who had to flee Texas after receiving a devastating diagnosis during her routine second trimester ultrasound. Is adoption an alternative to abortion?

Many people we know and love are adopted or have adopted, but where adoption fits into a reproductive justice framework is nuanced and complex. Dr. Gretchen Sisson, a researcher at Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH) at UCSF, has been studying adoption systems and interviewing birth mothers for over a decade. In this moving conversation she dispels myths about abortion, adoption, and the choice to parent, and advocates for an eyes-wide-open approach to positive change. Beyond Limits with Dr. Shelley Sella

It was nearly 17 years ago that Dr. George Tiller was assassinated in his church for providing abortion care. In this episode, Bev and Jonas speak with retired OB-Gyn Dr. Shelley Sella, who was trained by Dr. Tiller, and calls him “a midwife at heart.” She became one of the first women to openly provide third-trimester abortion care in the United States, and advocates for a midwifery model of care that centers the patient and prioritizes observation and patience. Her book, Beyond Limits: Stories of Third-Trimester Abortion Care (Beacon Press) is a testament to the critical importance of abortion without restrictions, and comes out in paperback on May 26th. About that new Guttmacher report

The who, where, when, and how of abortion in the United States is challenging to measure, yet understanding the healthcare landscape post-Dobbs remains important for meeting patient needs. The Guttmacher Institute is a trusted source for abortion data collection and analysis, and released full-year 2025 abortion incidence and travel data this week. Bev and Jonas ask all their nerdy questions and receive thoughtful answers from Guttmacher data scientist Isaac Maddow-Zimet. Together, they form a poignant picture of the lengths people will go to obtain care, and why the benefits of data collection outweigh the risks.
