Proto-Gospel: The First Prophecy of Christ. Genesis 3:14-16. [Sermon].
What is the first prophecy of Jesus Christ in the Bible? In Genesis 3:14–16, immediately after the Fall, God announces both judgment and the first Gospel promise—the protoevangelium (proto-Gospel). In this sermon, we explore the judgment of the serpent and the woman, the promise of the coming Messiah, and the dramatic prophecy that the serpent would bruise the Messiah’s heel while the Messiah would crush the serpent’s head. Genesis 3:15 points forward to Christ’s suffering, death, resurrection, and ultimate victory over Satan. We also consider the biblical meaning of the curse on the serpent, the consequences of sin, humility versus humiliation, the difficulties introduced into marriage by the Fall, and the remarkable mercy of God even in the midst of judgment. Most importantly, we see how Jesus Christ—the true Messiah and invincible Warrior—fulfills the promise of Genesis 3. Why does this seemingly mysterious character appear at some of the most important moments in Christian’s journey? In this video, we take a closer look at Evangelist, one of the most important—and often overlooked—figures in The Pilgrim’s Progress. Evangelist repeatedly appears when Christian is in danger, confused, tempted, or facing a moment of spiritual crisis. He warns, rebukes, encourages, and points Christian back to the right path. We will examine three major scenes involving Evangelist: The City of Destruction — Evangelist warns Christian to “flee wrath to come,” gives him the scroll, and points him toward the Wicket Gate. Mount Sinai — After Christian is deceived by Mr. Worldly Wiseman and turns toward Legality, Evangelist rebukes him and redirects him away from legalism and self-righteousness. Vanity Fair — Evangelist warns Christian and Faithful about persecution, suffering, and the dangers of the world, the flesh, and the Devil. Along the way, we will consider Evangelist's piercing questions, his warnings about death, judgment, and hell, his rebuke of worldly wisdom, and his call to persevere faithfully to the end. Perhaps most importantly, Evangelist functions throughout Bunyan’s story much like a pastor or missionary: he warns, guides, and directs Christian, but he cannot walk Christian’s journey for him. He appears at moments of crisis and urgency, reminding us that the Christian life requires perseverance, vigilance, and steadfast faith. Adam, Where are You? Genesis 3:8-13. [Sermon].
Camouflage in the Kingdom: When Sin Makes Us Hide from God | Genesis 3:8–13 Why do we hide when we sin? In Genesis 3:8–13, Adam and Eve have just eaten the forbidden fruit, and the devastating consequences of the Fall immediately begin to unfold. Instead of walking openly with God, Adam and Eve hide among the trees of the garden. They cover themselves with fig leaves, become afraid of God, shift blame, and attempt to evade responsibility for their sin. In this sermon from Genesis 3, we examine Sin’s Terrible Cost, Sin’s Evasive Tactics, and Sin’s Only Remedy. God asks Adam four penetrating questions: Where are you? Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree? What have you done? These questions expose the human tendency to hide from God, blame others, deceive ourselves, and refuse to take responsibility for our sin. But these questions are not merely questions of judgment. They also point us toward mercy. Instead of hiding behind our own righteousness, good works, religion, or self-improvement, we must come into the light and find our covering in Jesus Christ. Defeating Anxiety Do you struggle with anxiety, fear, panic attacks, or constant worry? In this video, I share some of my own battles with anxiety—including panic episodes from my past—and explain how the Lord taught me to fight fear with confidence in God. As Christians, we need to think biblically about anxiety. Is anxiety always sinful? Not necessarily. Sometimes fear is simply part of living in a fallen world. But anxiety becomes spiritually dangerous when it causes us to distrust God or run from our God-given duties. In this teaching, we explore how to transform anxiety into something spiritually productive by turning fear into prayer, action, and deeper trust in the Lord. Is the PCA Really Schismatic? A Biblical Response to Redeemed Zoomer & Jordan CooperIs it ever biblical to leave a church or denomination? Or is every separation from an established church an act of sinful schism?In this video, I respond to recent arguments by Redeemed Zoomer and Jordan Cooper regarding the doctrine of schism. Rather than beginning with historical theologians like Samuel Rutherford or Robert Baillie, I argue that we must first begin with Scripture itself.
