Math Therapy

Vanessa Vakharia, aka The Math Guru

Math Therapy explores the root causes of math trauma, and the empowering ways we can heal from it.  Each week host Vanessa Vakharia, aka The Math Guru, dives into what we get right and wrong about math education, and chats with some of today’s most inspiring and visionary minds working to make math more accessible, diverse, and fun for students of all ages. Whether you think you’re a "math person" or not, you’re about to find out that math people don’t actually exist – but the scars that math class left on many of us, definitely do. And don’t worry, no calculators or actual math were involved in the making of this podcast ;)

How to follow the curriculum without selling your soul

Send us a text! (US messaging rates apply) Over the summer, Vanessa recorded our first interview with an actual real life audience when she sat down at a conference with Chase Orton for an unfiltered and tense conversation. Among many hot topics debated, they discussed the challenges teachers face in wanting to make changes in their students' lives while having to closely follow curricula and standards - and one clip went VIRAL online with teachers all over the continent weighing in! Even months later, Vanessa is convinced that there MUST be some middle ground, so today she explores 5 strategies teachers can use to seek balance between the extremes by finding the "middle path": if you can't move the mountain, move a stone use the curriculum, don't let it use you protect the first 5 minutes of your class build your community redefine "success" Links mentioned: The Math Therapy episode with Chase Orton that started it all and the clip that went viral on TikTok with 200 comments 3 things every math teacher should do from Day 1 Episode on redefining "success" Contact us: Vanessa Vakharia: Instagram, TikTok, Email Math Therapy: Text the Podcast More Math Therapy: Get the book: Corwin, Amazon Audiobook: Audible, Spotify Merch store: Shop here

Before & After Pt. 1: How Math Therapy changed Lauren Keeling's life (May 2026)

Send us a text! (US messaging rates apply) Today we bring you part 1 of 2 of our first ever Math Therapy Makeover "Before & After"! When Vanessa first met Lauren Keeling earlier this year, being "not a math person" defined her entire life. Visiting Vanessa's tutoring centre in Toronto with her team from Imagine Learning's Heart Work podcast, Lauren was dreading her IRL math therapy session - literally terrified that Vanessa would ask her to do math with the mics on and cameras rolling! But what actually happened was magic; the two unpacked the roots of her icky feelings around math and talked through how to flip the script. The 2nd episode of Heart Work's 3-part series on math anxiety included portions of that session, but Imagine Learning graciously allowed us to share the FULL convo with Math Therapy listeners! And what makes this EXTRA special is that Vanessa interviewed Lauren 4 months later to find out what changed - and we'll be airing THAT episode NEXT week! Fluency & Flexibility aren't the math F-bombs you think they are w/ Christina Tondevold

Send us a text! (US messaging rates apply) One of the most misunderstood words in math ed right now is "fluency", so Vanessa invited an expert on the podcast to demystify it: educator Christina Tondevold. Christina calls herself a "recovering traditionalist" - she committed to stop teaching students in the same ineffective ways she was taught as a student. They discuss a ton of practical strategies you can bring to your classroom, such as: showing students how connected math is (in class and in their lives) building fluency on 3 balanced pillars: efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility teaching students to learn math by teaching them to be problem solvers If you enjoy this conversation, sign up for Christina's free 3-day virtual summit August 10-12, 2026 featuring Vanessa and a ton of other incredible speakers! Register here for the FREE "Build Math Minds Thinking Summit" About Christina: (Website) Christina Tondevold is a Recovering Traditionalist - she previously taught mathematics traditionally and expected the students to parrot back what she taught them. Now she gets to work with teachers in developing students’ mathematical understandings in a balanced way by developing conceptual understanding while working on procedural fluency through her site BuildMathMinds.com where you can get PD at Your Fingertips. Why math class might be more stressful than air travel w/ Cathy Marks Krpan

Send us a text! (US messaging rates apply) Prior to spontaneously recording this convo between sessions at CAMT in Fort Worth, TX recently, Vanessa and today's guest Cathy Marks Krpan had only really spent time together while frantically travelling through airports trying to make their connections. And in between panicked pleas to airport golf carts and documenting every detail on Instagram, one thing kept coming up - how the stress and uncertainty of air travel held so many parallels with the anxiety we feel in math class. Cathy has an incredibly warm & empathetic approach to teaching and shares inspiring insights on: sitting with the unknown empowering people with choice & agency treating students like the complex, emotional humans they are About Cathy: (Website, Instagram) An award-winning author and former classroom teacher, Cathy Marks Krpan is a professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, at the University of Toronto, where she teaches graduate courses in mathematics education. What 3 viral trends tell us about math trauma in 2026

Send us a text! (US messaging rates apply) As her Screen Time app will confirm, Vanessa spends way too much time online - so when trends involving math pop up, you can be sure she has commented, shared, ranted, and made her own version. Sadly, most of these “trends” involve negative stereotypes around math ability. These cliches are also extremely gendered, specifically directed at women and girls. So today she discusses 3 recent viral trends and what we can do to flip the script (click the links for examples): “I'm creative ... bc I suck at math" "I'm just pretending to do math - you’re the smart one" "I'm too pretty to do math" Contact us: Vanessa Vakharia: Instagram, TikTok, Email Math Therapy: Text the Podcast More Math Therapy: Get the book: Corwin, Amazon Audiobook: Audible, Spotify Merch store: Shop here

The unexpected text that turned my day around (and may turn yours around too)

Send us a text! (US messaging rates apply) Last week Vanessa ended her episode saying the podcast would be taking this week off while she was on vacation, but it might not surprise you that she is not exactly "good" at vacation .. so while she's definitely taking some much needed time off, she also could not resist recording this short episode after receiving a very unexpected and beautiful text from Timothy Jones, an inmate with the Prison Mathematics Project. Our podcast is available through prisons across the US, and Timothy was moved to write in to Vanessa through their messaging system after listening to her recent "tax season meltdown" episode. He shared some beautiful words of affirmation that we can all tell ourselves daily, which stem from his own journey getting to know his true self and rewriting the false stories he was told about himself in childhood. How I talked my way out of an anxiety spiral

Send us a text! (US messaging rates apply) Vanessa reflects on her recent self-described "meltdown episode" in which she talked herself down from a panic spiral. She was nervous to share something so messy & vulnerable, but the response was incredible - so many of you identified completely with her feelings. (Turns out tax season is a real trigger for us all!) Today, she shares some of her own observations once she had de-escalated, as well as some of the feedback and perspective she received - and most importantly she details what helped her actually get organized as opposed to just spiralling over the fear of being disorganized. Also, we got over 100 entries for last week's Texas Instruments "Oh My Math" Box giveaway! The winner has already been contacted, but if you didn't hear from us don't despair - we'll be giving away one box every month for the rest of the summer, so stay subscribed to Math Therapy so you don't miss your next chance to win. With the help of her calculator stuffie and her trademark stream of consciousness outer processing, she talks herself down from a panicked state and explores: what an anxiety spiral looks like and what's actually behind it negativity bias + confirmation bias = catastrophization! how therapy tools like a gratitude practice can help what this all has to do with math education If you can relate, or just want to give Vanessa a pep talk, send us a text! Math is a spiritual practice & here's the proof w/ Edward Doolittle

Send us a text! (US messaging rates apply) 500 BC: Pythagoras may not have even existed, but a number-worshipping / bean-hating (yet vegetarian?!) cult definitely did. 1600 AD: Johannes Kepler lays the mathematical foundation for Newton's theory of gravity while innovating in both astronomy and astrology (and also inventing the genre of sci-fi in his spare time). April 2026: Vanessa learns these stories and more watching Dr Edward Doolittle deliver a fascinating keynote in Saskatoon and impulsively convinces him to be on Math Therapy! So they sat down the next day to discuss topics like: how spirituality (in any form) can help us bring our whole selves to math what the whole world can learn from Indigenous understandings of math the power of storytelling in learning About Edward: Dr. Edward Doolittle, (Kanyenkehake [Flint Nation = Mohawk] from Six Nations in southern Ontario) is Associate Professor of Mathematics at First Nations University of Canada, a federated college of the University of Regina. His interests range from probability (particularly in relation to partial differential operators) to Indigenous mathematics and the educational possibilities afforded by those different views of mathematics.
