Dr. Ben Bikman - 'Shrinking Fat Cells: Energy vs. Insulin'

Dr. Benjamin Bikman earned his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. He is currently a professor of pathophysiology and a biomedical scientist at Brigham Young University in Utah. Dr. Bikman's professional focus as a scientist and professor is to better understand chronic modern-day diseases, with a special emphasis on the origins and consequences of obesity and diabetes, with an increasing scrutiny of the pathogenicity of insulin and insulin resistance. He frequently publishes his research in peer-reviewed journals and presents at international science meetings. Dr. Bikman has long been an advocate of a ketogenic diet in light of the considerable evidence supporting its use as a therapy for reversing insulin resistance. His website InsulinIQ.com promotes dietary clarity, healing, and freedom through evidence-based science about insulin resistance. Employing cell-autonomous to whole-body systems, Dr. Bikman's recent efforts have focused on exploring the intimate associations between the metabolic and immune systems. This presentation has been provided by @LowCarbUSA with generous support from @keto-mojo7147 and was recorded at the 'Symposium for Metabolic Health - Boca' in January 2024. Dr. Matthew Phillips - 'Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy in ALS'

Dr. Matthew Phillips is a full-time clinical and research neurologist at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand. His foremost passion is to explore the potential feasibility, safety, and efficacy of metabolic therapies, particularly fasting and ketogenic diets, in creating alternate metabolic states that enhance neuron bioenergetics and may lead to improvements in not only the symptoms, but also function and quality of life, for people with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and a variety of additional neurological disorders. Upon completing his Neurology training in Melbourne, Dr. Phillips realised that he had no interest in going the usual route of further specialising in a particular neurological disorder. He wanted to specialise in a therapy, but no such fellowship existed. Thus, he bought a one-way ticket to the other side of the world and departed the medical system, travelling and working in different places for three years, creating his own self-taught fellowship during which he learned about a variety of therapeutic possibilities that he had never previously considered. Upon completing his 3-year “fellowship” it dawned on him that metabolic strategies, particularly fasting and ketogenic diets, were promising therapeutic options for a range of disorders. He re-entered the medical system by commencing work as a neurologist in New Zealand, where his colleagues have helped him to apply these strategies to a number of humanity’s most difficult neurological disorders so as to determine whether they are feasible, safe, and can make an impact in terms of helping patients. This has resulted in his team conducting a world-first randomised controlled study of a ketogenic diet in Parkinson’s. The Canadian-born, Australian-trained neurologist ultimately wishes to help create a new field of Metabolic Neurology that emphasises applying metabolic strategies in healthcare so as to potentially heal many difficult disorders at their core, with the overarching goal being the improved health and enhanced nobility of humanity. Dr. Paul Mason - 'Dr. Paul Mason vs Prof. Behind Dietary Guidelines'

The Lecture that almost didn’t happen. Dr Paul Mason was invited to present on Nutrition at the prestigious Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Annual Scientific Congress, agreeing to provide a 40-45 minute lecture. Three weeks before the conference, Dr Mason was notified that the offered time allocation had been reduced by half. No official explanation was provided, however there were suggestions in informal discussions that there may have been some ‘behind the scenes’ influence. No evidence was ever provided to support this, and after some intervention from one of the section convenors, the presentation time was restored. Included in his session was Professor Linda Tapsell, who was a key player in the development of Australia’s current dietary guidelines. In her presentation, Professor Tapsell made the point that the Dietitians’ association did not, as claimed by Dr Mason, develop the Dietary guidelines. This rebuttal was correct. Rather, the DAA (now Dietitians Australia) was commissioned by the NHMRC to conduct systematic literature reviews to assist in the development of the dietary guidelines. There were no other significant points of rebuttal raised to Dr Mason’s presentation. Neither Professor Tapsell’s presentation nor the Q+A session which followed have been made available for public viewing (consent of all participants is required). Dr Paul Mason obtained his medical degree with honours from the University of Sydney, and also holds degrees in Physiotherapy and Occupational Health. He is a Specialist Sports Medicine and Exercise Physician. Dr Mason developed an interest in low carbohydrate diets in 2011. Since then he has spent hundreds of hours reading and analysing the scientific literature. For a number of years Dr. Mason has been applying this knowledge in treating metabolic and arthritis patients who have achieved dramatic and sustained weight loss and reductions in joint pain. Dr. Mason is also the Chief Medical Officer of Defeat Diabetes, Australia's first evidence-based and doctor-led program that focuses on the wide range of health benefits of a low carb lifestyle, particularly for those wanting to send into remission pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic illnesses.
