Stigmata of Francis
Saint Francis of Assisi Feast Day (October 4) honors the moment Francis received the stigmata—bodily marks resembling the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. St. Francis received the wounds in September 1224 while praying and fasting on Mount La Verna in Tuscany, Italy. Francis is the first historically recorded person to bear the stigmata. The event signifies a deep spiritual union with Christ's passion and love. Saint Francis (1181-1226) was an Italian mystic, poet and mendicant friar who founded the religious order of the Franciscans in the early 13th century. E366.
