    384. North American Martyrs

October 19 is the annual feast day of the North American Martyrs. In the United States, this feast day is celebrated on October 19 where the group is officially referred to as St. John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, and Companions, but they are commonly known as the North American Martyrs. The date of October 19 was selected because it closely follows the martyrdom date of St. Isaac Jogues, who was killed on October 18, 1646, in present-day Auriesville, New York. Jesuit missionaries from Sainte-Marie among the Hurons were ritually tortured and killed on various dates between 1642-49 in Canada, in what is now southern Ontario, and in upstate New York, during the warfare between the Iroquioan tribes the Mohawk and the Huron. They have subsequently been canonized and venerated as the North American martyrs by the Catholic Church (René Goupil, Isaac Jogues, Jean de Lalande, Antoine Daniel, Jean de Brébeuf, Gabriel Lalemant, Charles Garnier, Noel Chabanel). Jesuit Martyrs. September 26 is the annual feast day of the Canadian Martyrs. HNAe370. Luke the Evangelist

October 18 annually celebrates the feast day of Saint Luke the Apostle and Evangelist in the Western (Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant) traditions. He was a first-century physician from Antioch, a companion of St. Paul on his missionary journeys, and a Gentile convert to Christianity. He is the patron saint of physicians, surgeons, artists, bachelors, and butchers. He is typically represented by a winged ox or calf. Tradition credits him with painting some of the earliest icons of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. In many regions, the warm, sunny days around mid-October are historically referred to as "St. Luke's Little Summer". The third of the New Testament's four canonical Gospels is Luke. It tells of the origins, birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. The author is anonymous but the traditional view that Luke the Evangelist was the companion of Paul is still put forward. The most probable date for its composition is around AD 80–110, and there is evidence that it was still being revised well into the 2nd century. Jesuit Missionaries (World Mission Sunday)

World Mission Sunday is a day set aside by the Catholic Church throughout the world to publicly renew its commitment to the missionary movements through prayer and donations. It is celebrated by the Church around the world every year on the second-to-last Sunday of October. The Company of Jesus (to indicate its military spirit) also called "The Society of Jesus", were linguists, explorers and ethnographers. They learned New World Indigenous languages and customs, developed dictionaries and grammars, translated and preserved much of the history and traditions in their documents—which include details of their missions and activities and both the successes and failures of the Jesuits in their attempts to convert Indigenous peoples. In North America, their goal was to bring lost souls to Christianity and they were willing to endure hardships and to shed their blood to succeed. Ee195. 380. Marguerite d’Youville

Born in Varennes, New France (Quebec), Saint Marguerite d’Youville (1701-71) was marked early by loss and poverty, trapped in an unhappy marriage, then widowed young and left with debt and children to raise, including the heartbreak of losing four of them. Instead of turning bitter, she turns outward. Her radical trust in divine providence becomes practical charity, and that charity grows into the Sisters of Charity of Montreal (aka Grey Nuns founded in 1737), serving the sick, the poor, the elderly, and the forgotten. 379. Teresa of Avila

October 15 is the annual Feast Day of Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-82) — a Carmelite nun, prominent Spanish mystic and spiritual reformer. Active during the Counter-Reformation, Teresa became the central figure of a movement of spiritual and monastic renewal, reforming the Carmelite orders of both women and men. Her reforms met with determined opposition and interest from the Spanish Inquisition, but no charges were laid against her. The Carmelite order split as a result. The movement was later joined by the younger Carmelite friar and mystic Saint John of the Cross, with whom she established the Discalced Carmelites. Teresa was proclaimed the first female Doctor of the Church in recognition of her centuries-long spiritual legacy.
