    A Word With You - Carrying the Burden No More - #10324

    I was speaking at a Christian workers' conference in Alaska, and a veteran missionary approached me afterward with some intriguing information. She and her husband have worked for many years with an Indian tribe in Alaska - a tribe that has an interesting custom, according to the missionary. If you're from that tribe, they said you grow up learning about your backpack. It's not a real backpack, but it's a symbol of a very real human experience. The idea is that whenever you do something wrong, a rock goes in your backpack and you carry on your back all the weight of all your mistakes all your life. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Carrying the Burden No More." When I heard about that, I couldn't help but think what an accurate image that is no matter what tribe you are from. In a sense, we really do carry around with us the weight of the things we've done wrong, the people we've hurt, the failures, the sins. With our backpack comes this feeling of guilt, and shame, and regret. Many people carry their backpack till the day they die, but you don't have to be one of them. In our word for today from the Word of God, there is a very moving statement of what God has done to liberate us from the load of a lifetime of our sin. Speaking of Jesus, the Bible says in Isaiah 53:4, "Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows . . . He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our inequities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him." God says that Jesus, His one and only Son, took the backpack that was full of my sin, put it on Himself and carried it all the way to an old, rugged cross. He carried yours, too. If He hadn't, there would be absolutely no way you or I could have a chance of going to heaven. After all, when the Bible describes heaven, it says, "Nothing impure will ever enter it" (Revelation 21:27). You can't get into heaven if you've still got the backpack of your sin. Some of us hope we might be good enough to get into heaven. Right? That's probably the main reason we get involved in our religion and our church. But the Bible makes two things very clear: One, every one of us has this backpack called sin. It says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Two, there is no good we can do that will pay for our sin. In God's own words now, "He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy" (Titus 3:5). God's bottom line is this statement, Hebrews 9:22: "Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness." That's why Jesus allowed Himself to be pierced, and crushed, and nailed to a cross, to pay the penalty for every sin you and I have ever done, so we don't have to. I've been with a lot of people the day they finally put their total trust in Jesus to forgive their sin and make them right with God. And often they have described the feeling this way. They'll say, "I feel like a hundred pound weight's been lifted from my back." Well, it has. The deadly backpack of sin is gone. Yours can be, too, today, if you will, in your heart, make your way up that hill where Jesus died and leave your backpack, full of the sins of a lifetime, at the foot of His cross. If you don't belong to Jesus, and you want to, oh for goodness sake, today, tell Him, "Jesus, I'm Yours." You don’t look very happy.” Noah walked over to talk with him. “My friends are all mad at me,” he said. “Some of my school friends told some of the kids at church that I said bad things about them.” “And did you?” Mr. Davis asked. “Well, the kids at school are always gossiping about people they know, so I started doing it too.” Noah wiped a hand across his eyes. “I didn’t want them to tease me for not joining in, so I told a few stories about the kids at church. The thing is, I didn’t even like it—I felt bad because they’re my friends and I knew it was wrong—but now they say I’m two-faced, and no one likes me anymore.” Mr. Davis sighed. “Noah, you remind me of a chameleon—a lizard that changes colors. When it’s against the bark of a tree, it turns brown. When it’s against a leaf, it turns green. Now, God intended for chameleons to be that way so they could protect themselves from predators, but He didn’t intend for Christians to be like that. He wants us to show our true Christian colors all the time.” “But it’s hard to be so different from the other kids,” Noah said. “Well, Jesus never said it would be easy to follow Him. The Bible tells us that being a Christian often means people will make fun of us for loving Jesus and obeying Him. After all, Jesus was mocked by the very people He set out to save, and sometimes we’ll be treated badly too. That’s why we need to depend on Him for the strength to show our true colors instead of trying to blend in. When you refuse to join in your school friends’ gossip, you’re showing them how Jesus is helping you love others and treat them with kindness.” Noah sighed. “I guess I should apologize to both my school friends and my church friends, huh?” “I think that would be a good place to start,” Mr. Davis said. “And tell Jesus you’re sorry too. He’ll forgive you and help you show your true colors so others will know you belong to Him.” –Barbara J. Westberg How about you? Are you like a chameleon—trying to blend in with those around you? Depending on who you’re with, do you sometimes tell mean jokes and make fun of people, and other times act in a kind, loving way? As a Christian, Jesus wants you to show others His love all the time, not just when it’s convenient. Trust Him to help you let your true colors stand out.     Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer When Your Daily Routine Feels Meaningless

    When the answer to "what are your plans for tomorrow?" is the same as yesterday — laundry, dishes, write an article, you know, this and that — there are days when that answer brings tears to the eyes. Not from ingratitude, exactly, but from the quiet weight of monotony. Sort. Wash. Dry. Fold. Put away. Again and again. Day after day. And somewhere in that repetition, the temptation grows to reach for distraction — social media, movies, anything that makes the hours feel less like they are disappearing into nothing. But distraction is the enemy of the soul. The real need is not to escape the routine but to embrace it differently. Colossians 3:23-24 reframes every ordinary task with a single shift of perspective: whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord. Not for the applause of others, not for the feeling of significance, but for Him. A day spent doing dishes and laundry with a focus on God is a day well spent. When we worship, pray, and praise through the monotonous everyday stuff, intimacy with God deepens, faith grows, and what felt meaningless becomes sacred. The routine day has never been the problem. Living it on autopilot, disconnected from God's presence, is what hollows it out. When perspective shifts and the Lord is at the center, the soul refills. And a soul that is full will never describe its life as meaningless. Bible Verse "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." — Colossians 3:23-24, NIV Ponder Today Nothing done for the Lord is meaningless. When our ordinary tasks are offered to Him as an act of worship, they are transformed. The significance of a day is not determined by its drama but by its orientation toward God. Living on autopilot is what makes routine feel empty — not the routine itself. When we move from sunrise to sunset without becoming fully present to what God is doing in and around us, we miss the moments that will never pass our way again. Busyness and productivity do not fill the soul. A schedule can stay full while a soul stays empty. Doing does not equal being, and a life crammed with activity can still feel utterly meaningless if God is not at the center. Routine days are where faithfulness is quietly built. The repeated, ordinary steps are what enable us to walk through the fire when that day comes. Life becomes faithful and full in the ordinary, not despite it. Perspective is a self-fulfilling prophecy. When we choose to see each day as a stewardship from God — significant, meaningful, and filled with His presence — that is the life we will experience. When we choose meaningless, that is what we get. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, thank You for the dailiness of life. Even in the routine and mundane activities, You are there. May we be ever reminded of Your faithful presence and work in our lives. And whatever we do, may we do it with You in mind and for Your glory. In humble gratitude for this day, Amen.
