School is out, the church hallways are quieter, and the rush of the ministry year has finally paused. For many faithful volunteers, summer is when the exhaustion that has been quietly accumulating finally catches up. Staring at the fall calendar fills them not with joyful anticipation but with a heavy, sinking dread. And somewhere in the stillness of the slower season, a whisper grows louder: I don't think I can do this again in September. I think I'm done. Galatians 6:9 offers a picture drawn from the agricultural world that speaks directly to that weary soul. A farmer plows and plants in the spring, toils through the heat of summer, and waits through the uncertainty of heavy rain and scorching sun — with no guarantee that the harvest will come. But for the believer, the promise is different: at the proper time, there will be a harvest, if we do not give up. Summer exhaustion is not always a sign to quit. It can simply be a sign that too much has been poured out and not enough has been replenished. The summer slowdown is not a barren desert — it is a season where God is at work, quietly restoring what the ministry year depleted. The invitation of this episode is tender and clear: bring the exhaustion to God, receive the holy rest this season is offering, and trust that the harvest is His responsibility to bring — not ours. When the tank feels empty and the thought of returning to service feels heavy, that is often not a signal to walk away permanently but a call to be genuinely replenished before stepping back in. The harvest is God's responsibility, not ours. Unlike the farmer who cannot guarantee a good yield, the believer is promised that faithful doing of good will reap a harvest. We are responsible for the sowing; God is responsible for the fruit. Service that flows from depletion rather than abundance eventually burns out. God never designed His volunteers to pour out endlessly without being refilled. A soul that is not being nourished cannot sustain long-term faithful service. Use this slower season to discern, not just to rest. The quiet of summer is a gift not only for physical rest but for prayerful reflection. Ask God what He is calling you to carry in the next season — and what He might be inviting you to release. The whisper to walk away deserves honest conversation with God, not shame. Bringing our weariness, our dread, and our desire to step back to the Lord in prayer is not a failure of faith. It is exactly what He invites us to do. A Prayer for You Today Lord God, the sanctuary is quieter this month and the schedules have slowed, but in the quiet of this summer season, the exhaustion in my soul has finally caught up with me. As I look ahead to the fall, my heart feels heavy and the tank feels empty. Today I bring my exhaustion to You, asking You to fill me up again. Let these summer weeks be not just a break from the schedule but a holy rest for my soul. Breathe fresh life into my weary heart. Remind me of the promise in Galatians — that at the proper time, a harvest is coming if I do not give up. Help me to see this summer not as a barren desert but as a season where You are at work. Researchers studying genetics have concluded that the evolutionary tree of life does not reflect the facts of biochemistry.By the 1960s, biochemists had concluded that living things could be grouped into two distinct types based on their basic structures and genetic information. Eukaryotes have one or more cells and a true nucleus. Prokaryotes have smaller cells with no true nucleus. They are so different from eukaryotes that researchers concluded that they must have developed separately from non- living matter. By the late 1970s, a third type of life was recognized, the archaea. Archaea favor extreme environments such as undersea vents. Their biochemistry is unlike prokaryotes or eukaryotes.According to evolutionists, life may have had to develop from non-living material three times. Further, to explain the biochemistry of these three types of creatures, biochemists have to assume that at points these separate types had to exchange genetic material with each other, and with a fourth, unknown and extinct type of living thing!One logical conclusion of this new evolutionary approach is that life had to arise from non-life many times. Yet, modern biochemistry still has not explained how life could arise from non-life even once. This is Ken Ham, often a radio- and TV-program guest speaker on the Bible’s authority and reliability. According to evolutionary ideas, dinosaurs went extinct around 65 million years ago. But we find evidence that dinosaurs lived much more recently than that! Over twenty years ago, scientists discovered soft tissue in a dinosaur bone—red blood cells, collagen fibers, and blood vessels in a supposedly 65-million-year-old T. rex femur. We know soft tissue chemically breaks down—it can’t last millions of years! This discovery doesn’t fit with the evolutionary story. But it does fit with the biblical account of history. Sermon Overview Scripture Passage: 1 Peter 3:7-9 God’s plan for marriage is for husband and wife to become one flesh, totally together as one. In order to be this intimate, men and women must have constant, healthy communication. 1 Peter 3 offers four steps to total intimacy and total togetherness in marriage. Husbands must dwell with their wives thoughtfully: “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel...” (1 Peter 3:7). Men and women are equal in worth before God, but they are quite different and do not serve the same function. Neither is better or worse—God put these differences in us to complement each other. Men are designed to be initiators, while women are designed to be responders. Men and women are also different in thought. Generally, men tend to think logically, while women tend to think emotionally. Men tend to be inward thinkers, while women tend to be outward talkers. Men tend to be more goal-oriented, while women are generally more relationship-oriented. We must understand our differences and give thought to the other in our communication. We must also dwell together thankfully; we should be in the habit of expressing appreciation for each other, to each other. Adrian Rogers says, “Happy is the man who learns how to express thanksgiving. Nothing will do more to intimacy in a marriage than for you to recognize those character traits and achievements in your wife and give honor to her.” Couples must also communicate their trust in each other, understanding they are “heirs together of the grace of life” (1 Peter 3:7). Husbands must value their wives’ opinions and transparency, so that their wives may speak into their circumstances without fear of retaliation. One way we do this is by praying for each other, with each other. Finally, we must express tenderness: “Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous…” (1 Peter 3:8). This passage calls wives the weaker vessel—this does not mean they are inferior, rather, that they are more delicate and should be handled with tenderness, physically and emotionally. We must love in the little things, dwell together as one flesh, and allow our homes to become colonies of Heaven. Apply it to your life God’s Word gives practical insight to reach total togetherness in marriage; if we communicate thoughtfulness, thanksgiving, trust, and tenderness, we can reach total intimacy.
