‘Choose Who To Believe’: Live and Local with the Shoaldiggers!
Popular local band The Shoaldiggers stopped by Live & Local this week, ahead of the release of their new album “Choose Who To Believe.” Visit Shoaldiggers.com. Classify their music however you like – swampgrass? roots rock? “acousti-lectric bomb squad,” as they sometimes describe themselves? – the Shoaldiggers have built a well-earned reputation as one of the best live acts in the Triangle. And with “Choose Who To Believe,” their fourth album, they’re also expanding their recorded sound into wider ranges and new territories. “One thing we’re really proud of is all the eclectic members we have in the band, and all their expansive influences,” says Daryl White. “It’s that melding of everybody’s influences that make it so wonderful.” The Shoaldiggers are now up to ten members – most recently Kayley Raskin, a vocalist and classical violinist-turned-fiddler who joined the band last year after a chance meeting at the Carrboro Music Festival. “We got done playing our set and Kayley came up with her son and was like, ‘We really enjoyed your music,'” White remembers. “And immediately I said, ‘You play music, don’t you?’ And she said, ‘Yes.’ And I said, ‘You play violin, don’t you?’ And she said, ‘How did you know that?!’ I could just feel it. This week, Aaron welcomes local author Ford Worthy, who’s just published a new book about a personal quest to uncover the details behind a long-buried family story dating back more than 80 years. The book, “In Search of a Boy Named Chester,” begins with Worthy’s father telling him a story about how he’d accompanied a young boy from California to Nebraska while trying to return home immediately after World War II – and Worthy’s decision to try to locate that boy and find out what happened to him. He didn’t have much to go on – an uncertain name, a couple of cities, and a handful of details about the boy’s family – but that was enough to launch a fascinating search that eventually pulled in dozens of fellow seekers online. Stepping ‘Out of Bright’: Live and Local with Megayacht!
The band Megayacht stopped by Live & Local last week, following the release of their new album, “Out of Bright.” Visit MegayachtBand.com. “It’s been amazing,” says Mitch Bennett of the process of recording the album, Megayacht’s first since their 2024 debut “Attacking the Rust.” “We’ve been working on it (since) almost the day after the other album came out, (and) it’s been really fun to work on.” Recorded at the band’s practice space (a double-wide lovingly dubbed the Biltroy), “Out of Bright” shoots out of the gate with the driving guitar of opening track “20B” and races through eleven rocking tracks with lyrics that cover everything from airline seats to alien invasions. Songs from “Out of Bright” have been trickling out for months: album highlight “Good Luck/Bad Luck” was one of 97.9 The Hill’s top 50 local songs of 2025, a full seven months before the release date. “We walk in to practice and just start playing something – and often it’s terrible,” Bennett says with a laugh. “And other times it’ll turn into something good.” Listen to “Out of Bright” and purchase the album on Bandcamp. Now that the album is out, Megayacht is celebrating with an album-release show Saturday, August 15, at Nash Street Tavern in Hillsborough, beginning at 8 p.m. with local legend John Howie Jr. opening. On Air Today: A New Social Work Bachelor’s Program at UNC
UNC’s Board of Governors recently approved a new Bachelor’s of Social Work degree program at UNC-Chapel Hill, set to launch in fall 2027. The program will welcome a cohort of 30 students that year, expanding to 75 by the end of the decade – a significant move by the university to help address a statewide and nationwide shortage of social workers.
