On Air Today: Previewing UNC-Syracuse, with Jones Angell

Voice of the Tar Heels Jones Angell joins Aaron to preview Saturday’s big game against Syracuse in Kenan Stadium. It’s a rare prime-time game on a rare sunny day, and UNC’s in a rare position – actually favored to win, looking to build on a two-game win streak against a team that’s still looking for its first ACC win. But Jones says the Orange are not to be taken lightly: they’ve lost several very close games and they’ve got the talent to win. How can the Tar Heels avoid an upset? Jones says they need to stay the course – and avoid mistakes. 97.9 The Hill WCHL and Chapelboro.com are your headquarters for local news and local voices in Chapel Hill-Carrboro. Date Night: Ice House!

It’s a big weekend for local music, highlighted by a get-out-the-vote concert at Cat’s Cradle’s third venue. So, either tonight or later: what’s a good date-night idea if you’re going to show at that new venue? Brad and Aaron offer different suggestions – based on where you’re parking and which path you take to walk. Are you looking for romantic date-night ideas in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and the greater Triangle community? Memorable restaurants, cultural experiences, special events, great places to get outdoors? Every Friday morning at 8:30, Aaron Keck and his husband Brad Bednar go on 97.9 The Hill and offer their recommendations during “Date Night” on This Morning with Aaron Keck. What’s Trending: Take Me Out to the Negotiating Table

Trending today: the World Series gets underway tonight, and Aaron and Michael Koh are excited. But a question looms: with a major contract fight on the horizon between major league owners and players, is that battle going to be affected at all by the fact that this year’s World Series entries are both small-market, low-budget teams? (Aaron says probably not, but Michael’s not sure.) Also, Michael and Aaron participate in the only American tradition that’s just as central as baseball itself: making fun of the Mets. Also: Thomas Edison invents a working light bulb; a 63-year-old woman goes over Niagara Falls in a barrel; and a physician crosses the Atlantic in a rubber dinghy (for a reason Aaron suspects might have been kinda specious). 97.9 The Hill WCHL and Chapelboro.com are your headquarters for local news and local voices in Chapel Hill-Carrboro. Trending today: a major producer of paper products pours millions into developing a new alternative to wood – and apparently it works? The Kimberly-Clark Corporation is known for making toilet paper, paper towels, Kleenex, diapers, and the like – and they’ve spent years secretly developing a way to produce those products with fibers made from hesperaloe, or “false yucca.” Which, hey, cool, right? Oh, the Humanities: Abigail Dowd on the ‘Ethnography of a Song’

This month, Aaron welcomes singer-songwriter Abigail Dowd, who’ll be speaking and performing at Flyleaf Books Wednesday, October 28. Dowd will be exploring the “Ethnography of a Song,” beginning at 6 p.m. Ethnography refers to an approach to anthropological study, where a researcher will immerse themselves into an unfamiliar culture, without judgment, to try to completely understand it as much as possible; Dowd says that approach can also help in songwriting, when you try to adopt a different perspective or point of view – or, for that matter, when you’re trying to fully articulate your own.
