Talking Culture: ‘Looking Back’ on Chapel Hill’s Civil Rights Era, with Barbara Tyroler and Carter Minor

This Saturday, August 29, you’re invited to the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill for an opening reception from 2:00-4:30, celebrating a new photography exhibition called “Looking Back: Where Memory Takes Root.” Photographer Barbara Tyroler captured beautiful pictures of local neighborhoods and residents, all with an eye to local history: each of the photos has a connection to the memory of the civil rights movement and the fight for racial integration in Chapel Hill. The photos are just the start of the exhibition: Tyroler also partnered with the Marian Cheek Jackson Center to include oral histories from residents who lived through the civil rights era, accessible from QR codes in the gallery.
