HIV: What You Need To Know in 30 Minutes

HIV is still a scary term for many LGBTQ people today. The goal of this episode is to explain HIV in a practical, easy-to-understand way without being overly scientific. HIV has changed dramatically over the past few decades, but many of the beliefs and fears surrounding it haven't changed at the same pace. In this episode, we break down what the science actually says about HIV today. We cover the difference between HIV and AIDS, modern HIV treatment, viral suppression and U=U, how effective PrEP is, and what to know about PEP after a potential exposure. We also look at the psychology of HIV stigma, including how it shows up in dating and why outdated ideas about HIV can persist even when the actual risk has changed. Gay Voice and the Psychology of Sounding Gay

Why do some gay men “sound gay”? And can people actually tell someone’s sexuality just by hearing their voice? In this episode, we look at the psychology and science of the “gay voice,” from auditory gaydar and the vocal characteristics researchers have studied to where these speech patterns might come from. We also explore what happens when your voice can reveal something about you before you’re ready to say it yourself, why some gay men learn to monitor the way they speak, why “you don’t sound gay” can feel like a compliment, and what research says about voice and attraction. We also look at why your voice might sound different around other gay people, and how something you once tried to hide can eventually become a way of expressing identity and belonging. The Psychology of Gay Hookup Culture

Hookup culture is one of the most visible, debated, and misunderstood parts of gay male culture, but what does psychology actually tell us about it? In this episode, we explore the psychology of gay hookup culture, including how it developed, why gay male hookup culture is unique, and the psychological processes that can shape our experiences with casual sex. We look at sexual motivation, dopamine and novelty, reinforcement learning, attachment, minority stress, and the lasting influence of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We also separate popular assumptions from what the research actually says: Are hookups bad for your mental health? Does casual sex make relationships harder? Are people hooking up because they're afraid of commitment? And is everyone really having as much sex as it seems? Rather than deciding whether hookup culture is good or bad, this episode takes a research-informed look at why it exists, how it works, and why the same experience can mean something very different from one person to another. Gay Men and the Almost Relationship

This episode, we explore the psychology of what I'm calling the "almost" relationship. An almost relationship is a connection that became psychologically significant before it became clearly defined. It had enough reality for your mind to begin organizing around it, but ended before it developed into an established relationship. Drawing from cognitive psychology, we explain why unfinished relationships can remain mentally active long after they're over, why we replay conversations and search for answers, and why uncertainty can be so difficult for the mind to organize. Rather than focusing on closure, this episode examines what happens when a relationship ends before our minds have finished making sense of it. Whether you've spent weeks or years wondering what happened with someone you barely dated, this episode offers a different way of understanding why almost relationships can occupy so much mental space. Gay Men and Compartmentalization

Have you ever felt like different parts of your life are separate from each other? Like how you are with your friends is wildly different from how you are with others? In this episode, we explore the psychology of compartmentalization through the lens of gay male development. Why do so many gay men feel like different people around family, at work, on dates, or in relationships? How do concealment, minority stress, and years of adapting to different environments shape the way we organize ourselves? And when does a strategy that once protected us begin to limit us? Drawing on psychological research and clinical theory, this episode examines why compartmentalization develops, how it shows up in everyday life, and what it looks like to begin bringing those separate parts of ourselves back together. *Correction: Dr. Donald Winnicott was an English pediatrician not a psychiatrist. Gay Men and the Confusion of Friendship and Romance

Many gay men have experienced this question at some point: Do I actually like him, or do I just feel close to him? In this episode, we explore why it can be surprisingly difficult to distinguish friendship from romance, and why this confusion may be especially common among gay men. We examine how our early experiences of attraction, friendship, and belonging often become intertwined, how emotional intimacy can be mistaken for romantic attraction, and why some relationships that begin as dating ultimately feel more like friendship. Along the way, we discuss the role of sexual attraction, community, loneliness, and belonging, offering practical questions to help you better understand what you're actually feeling. Gay Men and the Obsession with Pop Stars

Why do so many gay men have “their” pop star? From Britney and Madonna to Gaga and Beyoncé, pop stars have occupied a unique place in gay culture for decades. This episode goes beyond music, fandom, and stereotypes to explore the psychology behind those attachments. Why do certain artists become so important to us? Why do we defend them so fiercely? Why do so many gay men connect with female pop stars in particular? And what does it mean when a celebrity becomes attached to some of the most formative moments of our lives? In this episode, we explore identity development, belonging, self-expression, parasocial relationships, reinvention, and the role pop stars often play in helping gay men imagine who they are allowed to become. Grindr is one of the most psychologically fascinating spaces in the modern gay community. Within minutes, a person can experience attraction, rejection, validation, excitement, disappointment, hope, and loneliness. In this episode, we explore the psychology behind Grindr and other hookup apps. Topics include intermittent reinforcement, anticipation, fantasy, social comparison, attention, connection, and the power of possibility. Why do these apps capture so much of our attention? What keeps us coming back? What happens in the brain when desire, uncertainty, and connection are concentrated into a single environment? This episode examines the psychological forces at work beneath the surface of modern gay hookups and offers a deeper understanding of how these platforms shape our experiences of attraction, belonging, and intimacy. Gay Men and the Weight of Longing

Why do some of us spend so much of our lives longing for what they don't have? In this episode, we explore the psychology of longing. From relationships and belonging to future possibilities and unlived experiences, longing is one of the most common yet least discussed parts of being human. Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, and LGBTQ development, this episode examines why longing exists, why it can become so powerful, and why many gay men may become especially familiar with it. Topics include daydreaming, anticipation, attachment, imagination, and the emotional pull of what we don't yet have. Gay Men and the Parallel Life

Many gay men do not simply grieve relationships, opportunities, or experiences. Sometimes we grieve entire developmental pathways: The city you never moved to. The relationship that almost happened. The friend group you thought you would find. The version of yourself that might have emerged if you had come out sooner. Drawing on research in counterfactual thinking, narrative identity, ambiguous loss, and queer development, this episode explores why certain possibilities stay with us long after they have passed and why this experience may carry particular weight for many gay men. What if the question is not whether we chose the right path, but what those unrealized paths can teach us about who we are and what we still value? and PS.... happy pride! Gay Men and the Fantasy Relationship

Have you ever been devastated by someone you barely dated? Found yourself unable to stop thinking about a situationship, an emotionally unavailable partner, or a relationship that never fully became real? In this episode of boy meets therapy, we explore the psychology of the fantasy relationship and why connections built on possibility can feel so emotionally powerful. This conversation dives into the unique kind of longing many gay men experience, especially after spending years watching relationships happen around them before getting the chance to participate in one themselves. We unpack why shorter relationships, mixed signals, and “what could have been” dynamics can leave such a lasting impact, and why grief in these situations often feels bigger than we expect. Drawing from psychology and research, this episode explores concepts like limerence, intermittent reinforcement, projection, idealization, and repetition compulsion to better understand why some relationships become psychologically consuming. This is not a conversation about being “delusional” or dramatic. It is a conversation about longing, attachment, hope, and the emotional meaning we assign to possibility. The Psychology of Gay Aging

What does aging mean in a community that often feels organized around youth, desirability, and reinvention? In this episode, Dustin explores the psychology of aging in the gay community and why it can feel different for many gay men. From “twink death” jokes and body image pressure to loneliness, chosen family, delayed development, and the fear of running out of time, we unpack what may actually sit underneath anxiety about getting older. Dustin also explores research on minority stress, LGBTQ+ aging, body image, and resilience, while discussing why many gay men feel simultaneously younger and older than they are, the psychological impact of coming out later in life, and what happens when desirability begins to shift. This episode is not just about aging. It is about identity, grief, friendship, reinvention, and what it means to build a life that can hold you over time. Beyond Coming Out: What Happens Next?

It's PRIDE month! If you've ever wondered about the origins of Pride month in June, I'm gonna give you the shortest, most followable explanation. After, we're jumping right into coming out! For many Gay and Queer people, coming out is sold to us as the moment everything finally clicks. You stop hiding, become confident, find your people, start dating, and finally feel like yourself. But what happens when that is not the experience? In this episode, we explore the emotional reality that often comes after coming out. Why do so many LGBTQ+ people still feel lonely, disconnected, awkward, or behind even after finally being honest about who they are? Why can coming out feel freeing and confusing at the same time? I'm also going to introduce a new concept to you that I am calling The Gray Zone. This is a period of the realization that you can no longer live inauthentically, but you haven't formed a true sense of Self to return to. If you have ever wondered, “Why do I still feel lost even after coming out?” this episode is for you. The Psychology of Gay Code-Switching

What is code-switching, and how does it affect your mental health? In this solo episode, host Dustin explores the psychology of code-switching, the process of adjusting your behavior, personality, or identity depending on your environment. Using research from Minority Stress Theory and studies on identity and authenticity, we break down why people code-switch and how it can lead to stress, burnout, and a fragmented sense of self. We also discuss how code-switching shows up in LGBTQ spaces, including the pressure to perform masculinity and fit into social hierarchies within the gay community. If you’ve ever felt like a different version of yourself in different rooms, this episode will help you understand why and what it might be costing you.
