The Emerald Tablet is only a few cryptic lines long, yet it became one of the most influential texts in alchemy. Traditionally credited to Hermes Trismegistus, it was said to have been found by Balinas in a subterranean chamber, inscribed upon an emerald tablet and preserving the secret operation of nature itself. The surviving evidence tells a different, but still remarkable, story. No authenticated emerald object has ever been examined. The earliest securely documented forms of the text appear in medieval Arabic recensions, especially the Book of the Secret of Creation, from the late eighth or early ninth century. From there, related versions moved into Latin Europe, where translators, scribes, and commentators gave its language new forms and new meanings.
