The Secret Name of Ra: The Word Said to Grant Power Over a God
In a Ramesside Egyptian healing spell associated with Deir el-Medina, the creator god Ra is poisoned by a serpent made from his own saliva and earth. The goddess Isis alone can cure him. But before she acts, she demands something Ra has guarded even from the gods: the name concealed within him. The surviving composition, often called Isis and the Name of Ra, is preserved in sources including Papyrus Turin 1993. Its setting is not simply mythological. The narrative formed part of ritual treatment for venom, drawing a connection between Ra’s ancient affliction and the danger faced by a human patient. Isis’s cure could become a divine model for the healer’s cure. Modern retellings often claim that Isis obtained complete control over Ra, or that the god’s secret word has survived in occult traditions. The Egyptian text supports a more precise but still remarkable picture. Isis gains privileged knowledge and exceptional ritual leverage, yet the spell does not record the hidden name for its readers. It tells the story of a secret being transferred while preserving the secret itself. This episode examines Egyptian ideas about names, identity, heka, healing speech, restricted ritual knowledge, divine vulnerability, and the difference between Ra’s many public names and the concealed name Isis demanded. Did the story preserve a lost formula of command, or did it dramatize the ritual force of genuine divine knowledge without ever giving that knowledge away? This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration.
