The Bears in the Community
For Wuikinuxv First Nation councillor and environmental researcher Jennifer Walkus, living alongside grizzly bears is a way of life shaped by respect, knowledge and coexistence. In this episode of Wildest Moments, host Ben Fogle speaks with Jennifer about her experiences in coastal British Columbia - from witnessing powerful moments between a mother bear and her cubs to the everyday reality of sharing space with one of the world's most iconic predators. Joining the conversation is Whipsnade Zoo zookeeper Sarah McGregor. Together, they explore what makes bears so remarkable - from their intelligence and complex behaviours to their seasonal rhythms - and reflect on how both communities and conservation zoos can play a vital role in protecting them. From Indigenous knowledge to modern conservation, they discuss what it truly means to live alongside wildlife, and how respect and understanding can shape a more balanced relationship between people and the natural world.
