    Orthodoxy Before it was Cool w/ Herman Middleton

    Herman Middleton was a pathfinder in his generation for bringing Orthodox Christianity to the English speaking world. Converted in the mid-90's, he studied theology in Greece at the University of Thessalonica. He started the publishing house Protecting Veil when he authored his first book Precious Vessels of the Holy Spirit, which examined the lives of contemporary elders in Greece. He has done extensive work on YouTube publishing interviews on his channel Protecting Veil and more recently has begun work with his new channel Herman Middleton, which is associated with his work at the Gadfly Academy.In today's interview we get to know Herman and his background before beginning a discussion about Orthodoxy before it was cool.     The modern practice of fasting in the Orthodox Church has become synonymous with following a vegan diet. Many Orthodox are unaware that there is a long tradition in the Orthodox Church of dry fasting, which is the practice of going for a period of time without food or water. This practice goes back to the earliest of times in the Church and has its origins prior to the day of Pentecost. Fasting as a spiritual practice is as old as humanity, and early Christians would have understood fasting as abstinence from both food and water. This kind of fasting is a discipline that the Saints practiced, even up to our own times, and one way modern Christians can join themselves to the experience of the Saints is to practice it themselves.Nathaniel has extensive experience with the practice of dry fasting, going as long as 9 days without food or water. He has not only incorporated dry fasting into his own spiritual practice but also teaches others how to do it.     On Relationships w/ Fr. Christian Siskos

    Fr. Christian is a priest in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America serving at St. Mark Orthodox Church in Bellevue Florida. After nearly becoming a monk on Mt. Athos, due to life circumstances, he ended coming back to the US and getting married. He observes that before you get married or become a monk everything in life is potentiality, but aftewards everything becomes actualized. Relationships between men and women have never been more strained than they are now. The percentage of adults who are married are at all time lows and divorce rates are sky high. In the church we also have the extremely difficult situation where the ratio of male to female converts is estimated to be about 9:1. Moreover, the economic situation makes it increasingly difficult for men to establish themselves financially to be able to support a family, which makes it even more difficult for them to find a spouse. What can be done? Fr. Christian has been counseling people in these difficult circumstances, and he will share with us some guidance that he has to give in this interview. Fr.     Objections to the Glorification of Fr. Seraphim Rose w/ Archimandrite Nicanor

    Archimandrite Nicanor is the Abbot of Tsarnogorsky Monastery "Holy Wonderworkers Kosma and Damian" in Bulgaria. He himself has a high regard for Fr. Seraphim Rose, however he has some reservations regarding the ongoing process of his glorification. On this channel we have for a long time been advocates for Fr. Seraphim's formal Glorification, but we are not biased by church politics; we want to hear all sides of the story. For that reason we have brought on Fr. Nicanor to hear a viewpoint that many have not considered. There is nothing wrong with discussing these issues, and in fact we SHOULD talk about them before going through with the process of glorification. Among the objections Fr. Nicanor brings up are the questioned canonical status of ROCOR at the time, how Fr. Seraphim would have viewed the reunification of ROCOR with the MP, and his controversial book on the tollhouses. We end the interview with a discussion of Fr.     Documenting Withdrawal from Seroquel

    I've been taking the antipsychotic medicine Seroquel for over 20 years. This drug has severely impaired my ability to function in life. The side effects have gotten so bad that I'm not sure which is worse, the symptoms of the disease or the side effects of the medication. Because the side effects have gotten so bad my hand was forced to try and find an alternative treatment, and I have been using Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy as a way to treat my illness in an attempt to get off these medications.     We are bringing back Nathaniel onto the channel. In his last appearance we discussed the time he spent on Mt. Athos. Touching on a similar theme, today we will be discussing the process of discerning for oneself whether they have a monastic vocation. Both Nathaniel and I have gone through this process and we both have an enduring love for the monastic habit. Nathaniel has had close contact with the monks on Mt.
