Ep. 40 - Is Mental Training a MYTH?

As more and more athletes, parents, and coaches pursue the elusive dream of ‘making it’ (whatever that means to them), there has been a proportionate rise in the number of mental training guides and programs for sale online. IS mental training something that can be LEARNED or improved upon from a book/program, or does it matter what the genetic make-up of the reader or watcher is? Listen in or watch as the guys discuss: What people hope to get from mental training? Why it’s especially popular with this generation & in this day & age Whether teaching mental training or mental toughness is even possible The positives & negatives of enlisting in mental training programs Is the fact that we protect our kids too much part of the ‘metal strength crisis’? Of course, the guys come to a consensus, draw pertinent and thought-provoking conclusions, and provide some solid and practical takeaways…and - as always - share a few laughs along the way. ----------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 39 - The BASICS of Beach Volleyball

As more and more coaches and players - and their parents - flock to the beaches and sand courts across the world (often to escape the restrictions, limitations, and politics of the indoor game), we thought it might be wise to help those who are new to the sand understand the key differences between the two versions of the sport and to help alleviate those ‘fears of the unknown.’ So, whether you’re new to the beach, considering adding it to your volleyball repertoire, or have been playing/coaching on the sand for years, sit back, relax, and listen in as the Volleyballogists break down the basics (and the not-so-basics) of beach volleyball in an insightful & hilarious way! ------------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 38 - Team Gossip vs Constructive Criticism

Parents are often placed in an awkward spot and may not know how to respond when their child starts speaking about teammates or a coach in a negative manner. Is it ever okay for parents to engage in such discussions with their children or is it best to avoid these topics so as to not magnify or intensify the problem? Is there a difference between gossip and genuine or valid concerns and - if so - how can parents spot the difference themselves & help steer their child back towards constructive or more productive thoughts? Listen in as Zuby & Erik help parents & coaches navigate the slippery slope and fine line between team gossip and constructive (or healthy) criticism. --------------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 37 - The Problems With Early Re-Signings

More than ever, club teams and players/parents are seeking to ‘lock each other up’ earlier and earlier each season - and often before tryouts have even started. Why do clubs offer players early re-signings in youth volleyball? Why do parents/players agree to sign so quickly? And are these early re-signings causing more problems than they’re solving? Listen in as Zuby & Erik chat in-depth about this recent phenomenon, its likely roots, and whether or not it makes sense in a competitive sporting landscape, where athletes have historically benefited from uncertainty or those good forms of pressure. ___________________ We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 36 - What's the POINT of Youth Volleyball?

We see it in gymnasiums and on sand courts across North America and even the rest of the world. Parents, players, and coaches are working, traveling, training, and practicing more than ever before, and all in an attempt to make it to the next level - or even to the highest level. But as our world has changed, so too have our motives and goals for youth sports participation. While there’s nothing overtly wrong with setting lofty (and quietly held) goals, there is something ‘off’ about wanting the athlete or the team to win at all costs or be miserable. Coaches are benching young players or forbidding certain athletes from doing certain skills; parents are arguing with refs, and are more eager or excited about the game than their children; and even players are viewing themselves as failures when they don’t win the gold or have decent stats in a given game or tourney. Youth volleyball today is sadly not teaching the values and character traits that it did in previous decades and the cause is simple - it seems we’ve collectively lost the whole POINT of youth sports. --------------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 35 - The Ankle Brace Debate SETTLED!

To brace or not to brace - that is the question! The debate has raged on for YEARS in volleyball circles and among coaches and trainers alike. Well, as usual, the Volleyballogists are going to use logic, reason, philosophy, and EVIDENCE to settle this age-old volleyball debate once and for all. Listen in as the guys go over all the arguments for and against ankle braces and come up with the definitive conclusion for players, parents, and coaches! ------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 34 - Why Indoor Players NEED Beach

What do all coaches and parents, who think beach volleyball teaches bad habits, have in common? That’s right - they’ve almost certainly never played the game! For those who have played both, it’s a ‘no-brainer.’ Beach volleyball gives indoor players a real edge when they come back in the gyms and off the sand. The mental and physical benefits of the game are quite obvious, and - aside from making players better, tougher, stronger, and faster - battling in the sand with no real coach (and having nowhere to hide) means that humility and independence are also valuable gains garnered from playing outdoors. Listen in while Zuby & Erik talk about their own journeys in beach volleyball and why every young player should be lining up to play, learn, and improve form from volleyball on the sand! ------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 33 - The 10 COMMANDMENTS of Club Building

We finally did it! The volleyballogists have put together the ultimate 10 ingredients that each volleyball club needs to set themselves apart from any and all competitors. Parents, players, club directors, and coaches all have opinions regarding what constitutes the perfect or ideal club volleyball program, so Zuby & Erik have organized & condensed all of these into a convenient & digestible 10 COMMANDMENTS of Club Building - or the 10 most important elements any existing/new club could implement to become a top notch and respected volleyball organization. Club directors and coaches will definitely benefit from the nuggets and insights in this episode, but players and parents, too, will want to listen in to help guide future club team selections. ------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 32 - The Power of Humility

It’s fascinating how universal it is that the highest achievers - in ANY walk of life - tend to successfully straddle the very fine line between confidence and arrogance. How do they do it and what’s the key difference? Well - it’s humility, but it, too, has to be tempered or balanced with a genuine belief in oneself. Humility is the secret and elusive ingredient for so many in our culture today and it impedes progress or growth - and manifests its absence in so many ways. Listen in as the guys talk about HOW parents, players, and coaches can actually learn to be more humble and thus open up a whole new channel or passage to greatness - on and off the court! ---------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 31 - HELP! My Kid's Coach is CRAZY!

In this episode, the guys sit down to chat about the difficulties in determining if it’s you or your kid’s coach that is, in fact, a bit crazy (because no one thinks that THEY might be the problem). So, after defining what constitutes a ‘crazy coach,’ the topic shifts towards logical steps players and parents can take on their own and in conjunction with others - because organization and documentation are important keys in helping future kids and parents. So often, parents and players are afraid to act because they fear repercussions with regard to playing time, etc. - but if we never speak up or act (in a calm and polite manner), how will club presidents/directors or even other parents know that there is a problem that needs to be addressed (or even avoided altogether)? This episode is definitely a great one for kids, parents, and coaches alike and features more practical and applicable takeaways for families who are struggling with a tyrant on the bench. -------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 30 - Coping & Bouncing Back From Injury

The dreaded ‘i’ word is a player’s worst nightmare - and isn’t much fun or easy on parents & coaches, either. In this episode, Zuby & Erik chat about the physical and mental struggles caused by injury along with some vital early steps that can help speed up recovery and make coming back that much easier, both physically and mentally. The topic of injury prevention also comes up along with some overlooked and never considered benefits (yes, BENEFITS) of getting injured. Ep. 29 - Do Good Coaches Know About Bad Coaches?

There are a lot of good coaches out there and they often find themselves feeling ‘attacked’ when parents, players, and even other coaches talk about all the ‘bad apples’ out there. But do good coaches know exactly how bad the coaching has gotten on a wider scale over the past 10 to 15 years? If we live within our own lanes, silos, and stories, we might not be aware of what’s happening across the board or with those ‘other coaches’ in our club. In this episode, the guys better define and illustrate what a ‘bad coach’ is by providing clear examples they (and countless other parents/players) have witnessed, seen, and heard in and around gymnasiums over the past several years. The goal is to show parents/players that it isn’t them, they’re not alone, and remind good coaches to maybe think twice before they decide to defend ‘all coaches’ all the time…just as we used to do before gaining a broader perspective (by having our kids play in the system for years). --------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 28 - When Is It Okay To Quit?

Quitting is usually considered to be a negative in our culture, but are there times when quitting (or leaving a team/club) is actually the harder and more useful option? While there’s value in struggle, and facing adversity can teach us important lessons, parents also need to be mindful of the benefits gained from staying or leaving and - more importantly - of the messages our children are receiving about tolerating or remaining in unproductive situations/relationships. As usual, the guys discuss this complicated issue from a variety of angles and help parents and players weigh key factors to help better decide if their situation is worth staying in or one from which they need to free themselves. -------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 27 - How Coaches Lose Teams

Most of us have seen it. The coach is talking & ‘selling’ but the team isn’t listening & ‘buying.’ This is a coach who has ‘lost’ their team and it’s virtually impossible to get the players back. So, why does it happen? Well - there’s the easy answers, like the coach is a ‘screamer’ or doesn’t really offer constructive or helpful criticism, but there are also less obvious things that coaches do everyday that undermine the faith and trust their players have in them. Listen in or watch as Zuby & Erik discuss the deeper causes behind why and how coaches lose the attention of their players and why athletes might be ‘checking-out’ mentally as the season drags on. Aside from the negatives to avoid, the guys also address practical positive things coaches can implement today to help ensure that players are all feeling valued and ENGAGED throughout the long club season…and will run through a brick wall for you! Ep. 26 - How Should Parents Cheer?

Erik is finally back from vacation and sits-down with Zuby to chat about the often controversial (and hot-button) topic of how parents should cheer. As usual, they offer up a few unique insights and take-aways and come at the issue from a variety of perspectives. It’s true that sometimes parents forget that these are, in fact, children on the courts…but if kids are shielded from tough or even unfair things then how will they ever manage to build up resilience and tolerance to such things? The guys also discuss whether parents treat young male players differently than their female counterparts and - if so - is that rooted in sexism? As usual, the guys will have you laughing, crying(?), and - most importantly - thinking about these and other topics in an entirely new light…we hope you enjoy! ----------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 23 - The Secret to a Better Season (& LIFE)

Join Zuby & Erik as they discuss the secret to a better season - and a better LIFE. It’s the art of being GRATEFUL, of course, learning to not take the little things for granted - and even seeing the ‘bad’ things as positives in the long run. Sometimes, we forget that we’re lucky to have the problems we have and that, in actuality, our outrage or misery over a given situation is, in large part, because we have nothing else to worry about. As usual, the guys go DEEP, into a philosophical discussion regarding how, even the seemingly worst things (in a season or in life), can ultimately be or lead to something amazing or start us on an unexpected or previously unconsidered path. Ep. 22 - Managing Toxic Parents

Some people think it’s the greatest problem in all of youth sports. While there are definitely toxic players and coaches, something that all players, coaches and parents themselves can agree on is that there are a lot of toxic PARENTS out there, today. Whether it’s demanding more playing time when it’s not warranted for their child, feeling threatened or triggered every time their son or daughter faces adversity, or even verbally abusing players, coaches, or other parents over things they don’t understand, there are strategies to employ to minimize the headaches and the hassles from such parents. Join Zuby & Erik, once again, as they delve deep into this important topic and discuss not only the root causes of toxicity in parents, but also why it’s on the rise (across society) and how coaches, players, and the truly GREAT parents can help minimize its impact and even turn these foes into allies from the first day of the season! --------------------- We hope you enjoy this podcast & all the FREE content created by the former pro players, coaches - and current volleyball parents - at VOLLEYBALLOGY. Ep. 21 - Handling Toxic Teammates

Listen in as Zuby & Erik discuss the growing problem of toxic teammates in volleyball. As usual, the guys don’t take the superficial approach, but instead examine the - often overlooked - root causes behind these behaviors so players, parents, & coaches can FIRST understand the source (vital) before attempting to address the issue in a meaningful, practical, and thoughtful way. This episode will specifically explore: The various forms that toxic behavior can take on Why players attempt to blame and exclude others Practical approaches for players, parents, and coaches to adopt Specific techniques players can use TODAY to nullify, neutralize, and ultimately end toxic teammate behavior directed at them Why it might even be a positive thing for your young athlete to encounter toxic teammates as early as possible The guys even discuss whether bullying is a natural phenomenon (i.e. from tribal times) or whether it is more a product of our modern world of convenience and leisure time.
