Examining the Skeptics Dictionary Critique of Dean Radin

Tracking Wisdom Episode 46 Examining the Skeptics Dictionary Critique of Dean Radin Recorded - 08/31/26 DESCRIPTION In this follow-up to our discussion of Dean Radin, we turn to the other side of the debate through Robert Todd Carroll’s Skeptic’s Dictionary critique of Radin’s 1997 book, The Conscious Universe: The Scientific Truth of Psychic Phenomena. Carroll raises substantial questions about how Radin interprets experimental results, uses meta-analysis, accounts for alternative explanations, and moves from statistical anomalies to claims about psi phenomena. We examine where those criticisms appear strongest, including concerns about methodology, error, fraud, and the distinction between evidence for an unexplained effect and proof of a particular explanation. But we also turn the same critical lens toward the critique itself. Where does legitimate skepticism become rhetoric? Does identifying weaknesses in Radin’s arguments justify dismissing the larger body of research? And how should a non-expert navigate a debate in which both proponents and critics can selectively emphasize the evidence most favorable to their position? The conversation ultimately becomes less about deciding whether Dean Radin is right or wrong and more about a difficult problem we all face: how do we remain appropriately skeptical without allowing skepticism itself to become certainty? We discuss: Robert Todd Carroll’s major criticisms of Radin’s work Evidence, proof, and alternative explanations Meta-analysis and statistical anomalies Methodological concerns, error, and fraud The rhetoric used by both proponents and skeptics The limitations of critique as a form of refutation Confirmation bias and our tendency toward black-and-white conclusions How non-experts can think critically when evaluating competing scientific claims This episode is intended as a companion to our previous discussion of Dean Radin and as an exercise in engaging seriously with arguments that challenge our own assumptions. Exploring The Science of Magic - Dean Radin

Tracking Wisdom Episode 45 Exploring The Science of Magic - Dean Radin Recorded - 04/13/26 DESCRIPTION In this episode, we present Dean Radin: a scientist with training in engineering and psychology who has spent four decades studying psi phenomena. We discuss his role at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and his academic positions. We outline his core claim that small but statistically robust effects appear in controlled experiments. We note his distinction between existence and efficacy: the phenomena show statistical reality in lab tests but often lack strong practical power there because ethical and contextual constraints prevent replication of high‑stake, emotionally charged conditions found in real life. We summarize several of his empirical studies, including the chocolate trial, where intention appeared to change mood scores in a double‑blind test. We recount water freezing and ice crystal aesthetics, the random number generator research including retrocausality findings, and how validated radioactive decay generators were used. We also mention his past work linked to Project Stargate and his role translating anomalous findings into testable protocols. The summary closes by noting his new book, Science of Magic, and the hosts’ interest in its data‑driven approach. Takeaways: Dean Radin distinguishes existence from efficacy, showing small lab effects but real statistical significance. Experiments where intention altered outcomes, including blessed chocolate improving mood in double blind trials. Water ice crystals showed aesthetic differences when influenced by positive or negative thought under blinded conditions. Random number generators and radioactive decay measures revealed small but repeatable effects of attention and intention. Retrocausality results where prerecorded random data could be influenced similarly to live tests, which surprised us. Translational limits, arguing practical efficacy often requires high emotional stakes that cannot be ethically reproduced in laboratories. Broader scientific acceptance is growing and that understanding interconnectedness may foster cultural evolution toward greater harmony. Between Conformity and Creativity: Does Science Need More Imagination?

Tracking Wisdom Episode 44 Between Conformity and Creativity: Does Science Need More Imagination? Recorded - 03/16/26 DESCRIPTION What role does creativity play in how we understand reality—and what happens when the institutions responsible for expanding human knowledge become increasingly structured around collaboration, specialization, and consensus? In this episode, we reflect on a conversation about art, innovation, and the nature of creativity before turning to a broader question: does modern science leave enough room for genuinely original thinking? We explore the distinction between art and innovation, and consider whether creativity might be more than a uniquely human act. From there, the conversation moves into the structure of modern science itself. Large institutions, collaborative research, peer review, and increasingly resource-intensive projects have made extraordinary scientific achievements possible—but those same structures can also create incentives toward conformity, specialization, and lower-risk research. Drawing on ideas raised by Iain McGilchrist and others, we consider the tension between individual insight and collective knowledge. Committees may be effective at evaluating, refining, and combining ideas, but where do genuinely new ideas originate? And how do we preserve space for unconventional thinking without abandoning the empirical rigor that makes science valuable? The question isn't whether science needs less structure or less collaboration. It is whether a mature scientific culture can preserve both: the discipline required to test ideas and the imagination required to generate new ones in the first place. Takeaways: Creativity may be worth considering as more than artistic expression, particularly when examining innovation, discovery, and consciousness. Modern scientific collaboration enables work that individuals could rarely accomplish alone, while institutional incentives may also discourage unconventional or high-risk ideas. Original insight and collective evaluation serve different functions; scientific progress may depend on creating room for both. Philosophy, intuition, and imagination can contribute to generating hypotheses without replacing empirical testing. Preprints, broader critique, and more open exchange of developing ideas may provide ways to expose unconventional thinking to scrutiny without requiring immediate institutional consensus. Scientific institutions are tools for producing knowledge—not knowledge itself—and can be examined and improved like any other human system. Reflecting on 'Why I'm Not Excited About Nonduality Anymore' - Rupert Spira

Tracking Wisdom Episode 43 Reflecting on 'Why I'm Not Excited About Nonduality Anymore' - Rupert Spira Recorded - 03/02/26 DESCRIPTION We listen to a short Rupert Spira clip and then respond together. The clip asks why the initial excitement about nonduality can fade. Rupert explains that what once felt like elation often becomes a steady ease. He points to peace or quiet joy rather than ecstatic happiness. We reflect on that distinction and find it true in our lives. I describe a shift from constant practice to living meditation. I use brief, simple practices to return to peace when reactivity arises. Peter notes that studying theories can distract from organic beingness. We agree that talking about the experience and being in community help maintain clarity and connection. Takeaways: The initial excitement about non-duality often fades into a calm, ordinary peace. Value of quiet joy and peace rather than seeking constant elation or dramatic experiences. We described living meditation as brief, practical moments of return to peace during daily life and activity. How talking openly with peers and teachers about suffering helps one feel connected and less isolated. Discussing Dr. Srini Pillay on 'Your Mind Predicts Reality'

Tracking Wisdom Episode 42 Discussing Dr. Srini Pillay on 'Your Mind Predicts Reality' Recorded - 02/02/26 DESCRIPTION This discussion occurs in the context of an interview with Dr. Pillay on the Lottery, Dreams and Fortunes channel by Timothy Schultz. We foreground the principal contention advanced by Dr. Srini Pillay: that cultivating an unfocused, default‑mode state of mind—through practices such as daydreaming, doodling, and intentional openness—optimizes the brain’s predictive apparatus and thereby increases the likelihood of realizing intended outcomes. We discuss our ambivalence about the presentation of these ideas within manifestation and lottery narratives, and we register caution regarding the facile conversion of anecdote into authoritative claim. We examine Pillay’s emphasis on whole‑body psychology and neuroplastic brain training, noting his references to the hypothalamic‑pituitary‑adrenal axis, mirror neuron phenomena, and the default mode network as mechanisms by which internal states influence external events. We acknowledge his non‑dogmatic posture, his admission that many cited studies are preliminary, and his insistence that openness must be coupled with persistence and concrete effort. We also consider methodological constraints, the difficulty of quantifying “luck,” and the risk that scientific shorthand may be misappropriated into pseudoscientific rhetoric. Ultimately, we found the discussion instructive and pragmatic, and we invite disciplined and skeptical engagement with the practices Pillay proposes, including his eight‑week program and subsequent twenty‑one‑day challenge. Takeaways: Dr. Pillay's non-dogmatic stance and his encouragement of open inquiry and skepticism. We think training the brain through unfocused states like daydreaming, doodling, and calm openness can improve creativity and problem solving. Caution about how scientific findings were presented and I worry about name dropping without detailed explanation. We observed that anecdotes and small studies warrant open curiosity but do not prove broad claims about manifestation. How the body informs the mind and that whole body psychology matters for emotion and health outcomes. We noted the importance of hard work and persistence alongside openness, rather than treating luck as the sole cause of success. A discussion of consciousness frameworks and the interface metaphor useful for reframing perception and reality in clear, practical terms. Mindfulness - Cultivating Presence in Everyday Life

Tracking Wisdom Episode 38 Mindfulness - Cultivating Presence in Everyday Life Recorded - 10/27/25 DESCRIPTION Mindfulness, defined as focused attention on the present experience, is the central theme of our discourse today on the Tracking Wisdom Podcast. We engage in an enlightening conversation with our esteemed mindfulness instructor, Peter, who shares his personal journey into mindfulness and elaborates on the misconceptions surrounding the practice, particularly the notion that one must "empty the mind." As we delve into the intricacies of mindfulness mediation, we explore the significance of observation and kind attention, emphasizing that the essence of meditation lies in recognizing the wandering mind rather than striving for an unattainable stillness. Through this exploration, we aim to provide insights that can enhance your understanding of mindfulness and its applicability in daily life. We invite you to join us on this profound journey towards cultivating presence and awareness in our everyday experiences. Takeaways: Mindfulness is defined as the focused attention on the present moment's experience, which facilitates greater awareness. The misconception that meditation's goal is to empty the mind is a misunderstanding of its true purpose. Mindfulness meditation involves observing one's thoughts and feelings without judgment, fostering a kinder approach to oneself. Establishing a consistent meditation practice can be beneficial, but it is essential to adapt it to individual needs. The Consciousness Stack – Mapping a Substrate Model of Existence

Tracking Wisdom Episode 35 The Consciousness Stack – Mapping a Substrate Model of Existence Recorded - 09/01/25 DESCRIPTION The salient point of our discussion centers on the conceptual framework we refer to as the "consciousness stack," which emerged from a dialogue involving artificial intelligence. We delve into the intricate layers that constitute our understanding of reality, positing that consciousness serves as the fundamental essence from which all material experience arises. Throughout our discourse, we explore the interplay between intellect and mystical experience, asserting that while intellectual exercises can enhance our understanding, they may simultaneously obstruct direct engagement with the mystical dimensions of existence. The conversation further traverses various philosophical paradigms, including those articulated by Tom Campbell and Donald Hoffman, as we attempt to delineate the mechanisms by which consciousness manifests into the tangible world. Ultimately, we invite our listeners to contemplate the profound implications of these ideas on their own experiences and perceptions. Takeaways: In this episode, we explored the concept of a 'consciousness stack', which presents a theoretical framework for understanding the relationship between consciousness and reality. We discussed how intellectual understanding can sometimes act as a barrier to experiencing mystical states, emphasizing the need for openness to transcend beyond conventional thought. The podcast highlights the importance of engaging in thought experiments to expand our perception and understanding of consciousness and existence. We examined the layers of reality, from pure awareness to the manifestation of matter, illustrating the complexity and interconnectedness of our experiences and perceptions. The conversation touched upon the significance of personal experience in shaping our understanding of consciousness, highlighting the value of both intellectual and experiential knowledge. Finally, we reflected on how our individual learning contributes to a collective evolution of consciousness, underscoring the fractal nature of existence and the pursuit of lower entropy. We explore the scientific underpinnings of this experience, highlighting studies that indicate the activation of the prefrontal cortex during lucid dreams, thereby suggesting a level of consciousness typically absent in conventional dreaming. The discussion extends to the historical and cultural significance of lucid dreaming, particularly in spiritual traditions such as Tibetan Dream Yoga, where practitioners intentionally cultivate this state for personal growth and insight. Additionally, we reflect on our personal encounters with lucid dreams, examining both the exhilarating sense of control and the moments of fear that can accompany such experiences. Ultimately, we aim to illuminate the broader implications of lucid dreaming in relation to consciousness, awareness, and the quest for deeper understanding within the human experience. Takeaways: The episode articulately elucidates the concept of lucid dreaming, defining it as a conscious awareness of the dream state. Various historical and cultural practices surrounding lucid dreaming, such as Tibetan Dream Yoga, are explored in depth during the discussion. Lucid dreaming is distinguished from regular dreaming by the presence of metacognition, enabling self-reflection within the dream. Listeners are advised that engaging in practices to induce lucid dreaming can enhance one’s ability to experience this phenomenon purposefully. Exploring Tom Campbell's Theory of Everything

Tracking Wisdom Episode 32 Exploring Tom Campbell's Theory of Everything Recorded - 07/07/25 DESCRIPTION Today, we delve into Tom Campbell's Theory of Everything, which posits that consciousness is the fundamental basis of reality, opposing the traditional materialist perspective. Campbell, a physicist with extensive experience in both physics and consciousness exploration, articulates that our physical universe serves as a learning laboratory for consciousness, where the ultimate aim is to evolve towards love and reduce entropy. In our discussion, we explore how Campbell's insights resonate with perennial wisdom and contemporary scientific inquiries into consciousness, particularly through the lens of quantum mechanics. We also reflect on the implications of these ideas regarding the interconnectedness of all conscious agents, emphasizing that our perceived separateness is an illusion. Through this episode, we aim to illuminate the profound intersections between science, spirituality, and the human experience, inviting listeners to contemplate their own understanding of consciousness and reality. Takeaways: The fundamental premise of Tom Campbell's theory posits that consciousness is the primary reality, fundamentally rejecting materialism in favor of idealism. Campbell's theory suggests that our physical universe operates as a learning laboratory for consciousness, emphasizing the importance of growth and development through experiences. The concept of 'decision space' illustrates the limitations of free will, indicating that our choices are constrained by the circumstances and knowledge we possess. Campbell's assertion that consciousness computes reality implies that our existence is akin to a simulation, where we interact as conscious agents within a structured rule set. The relationship between love and lower entropy is pivotal, suggesting that moving towards love reduces chaos, which is a central theme throughout Campbell's teachings. The intersection of science and spirituality in Campbell's work reveals a growing awareness of interconnectedness, echoing ancient wisdom traditions that emphasize unity and collective experience. The Ten Commandments: Signs of Progress on the Spiritual Journey

Tracking Wisdom Episode 30 The Ten Commandments: Signs of Progress on the Spiritual Journey Recorded - 06/23/25 DESCRIPTION: The primary focus of our discourse today revolves around a profound reexamination of the Ten Commandments, which we contemplate not merely as divine edicts but rather as commitments that foster a deeper understanding of our relationship with the divine and one another. We engage in a critical analysis of the traditional interpretations that imbue these commandments with a sense of punitive consequence, juxtaposing this with the notion of an all-loving God who grants humanity the gift of choice. This exploration leads us to consider the commandments as signposts or waypoints on a spiritual journey, rather than immutable decrees intended to incite fear and guilt. We assert that true alignment with these principles manifests not through compliance, but through an intrinsic transformation that reflects our inner peace and harmony. Ultimately, we aim to elucidate how these commitments can serve as guiding principles that enrich our lives and foster a more profound sense of communal and personal well-being. Takeaways: The episode delves into the reinterpreted understanding of the Ten Commandments as commitments rather than obligatory dictates of divine law. Both hosts express a significant friction with the traditional portrayal of an angry God juxtaposed against the concept of unconditional love. The discussion emphasizes the importance of personal inner peace over compliance with external rules, suggesting a deeper alignment with one's true self. The notion of commandments as signposts on a spiritual journey is proposed, highlighting the importance of personal choice and freedom in spiritual development. The conversation explores the relationship between external harmony and internal peace, suggesting that both aspects can mutually influence one another. The hosts reflect on the idea that traditional religious teachings may sometimes foster guilt and fear rather than the intended inner peace. The Illusion of Separation: Sin, Forgiveness, and the Divine Within

Tracking Wisdom Episode 29 The Illusion of Separation: Sin, Forgiveness, and the Divine Within Recorded - 05/12/25 This episode delves into the profound and often contentious themes of sin and forgiveness within the context of contemporary spirituality. Ryan and Peter engage in a critical exploration of how traditional Christian interpretations may inadvertently perpetuate a sense of guilt and separation from the divine. They propose an alternative framework, wherein sin is viewed not as a mere list of wrongdoings but as a manifestation of the illusory separation created by the ego. The discussion emphasizes the importance of recognizing this separation as the source of suffering, advocating for a paradigm shift towards understanding repentance as a movement towards unity and love. Furthermore, the speakers articulate that forgiveness is an internal process rather than an external decree, suggesting that true grace arises from self-acceptance and the acknowledgment of one's intrinsic divinity. This enlightening conversation encourages listeners to transcend rigid moralistic views and embrace a more holistic understanding of their spiritual journey, fostering a deeper connection with themselves and the divine. Exploring Perennial Wisdom: Universalist vs. Traditionalist Perspectives

Tracking Wisdom Episode 28 Exploring Perennial Wisdom: Universalist vs. Traditionalist Perspectives Recorded - 04/19/25 The salient point of this podcast centers on the exploration of perennial wisdom through two distinct schools of thought: the universalist perspective and the traditionalist perspective. We engage in a detailed discussion about the essence of perennial philosophy, positing that it embodies a shared core truth found within all religions and philosophical frameworks. The universalist perspective embraces the notion that various religious traditions are mere pathways leading to a singular truth, emphasizing personal mystical experiences over established doctrines. Conversely, the traditionalist perspective asserts the uniqueness and divinely inspired nature of each religion, advocating for the preservation of sacred teachings and cautioning against the dilution that may arise from syncretism. Throughout this discourse, we reflect on our own positions within this dichotomy, acknowledging the merits and criticisms inherent to each viewpoint while seeking deeper understanding of the implications they hold for spiritual seekers. Takeaways The perennial philosophy posits that all religions share a foundational truth about reality and humanity. Universalist perennialism emphasizes the mystical experience as a unique path to understanding underlying truths. Traditionalist perspectives argue for the preservation of religious purity against the dilution that comes from syncretism. Critics of traditionalism point out that rigid adherence to doctrine can lead to exclusion and a failure to adapt to modern spiritual needs. The discussion highlighted the importance of discernment when choosing a spiritual path or teacher. Both perspectives, universalist and traditionalist, offer valuable insights into the nature of spiritual exploration and understanding. Revisiting Our Core Thesis on Spiritual Teachings

Tracking Wisdom Episode 27 Revisiting Our Core Thesis on Spiritual Teachings Recorded - 04/19/25 The fundamental thesis of this episode centers on the exploration of perennial wisdom, a concept which posits that all spiritual teachings share an underlying truth that transcends time and culture. We delve into the origins of our inquiry, tracing back to our initial motivations for this podcast, as well as our encounters with various philosophical and scientific perspectives, including Donald Hoffman's interface theory and the insights of Joseph Campbell. Throughout our discourse, we elucidate the core elements of perennial wisdom, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all existence and the illusory nature of the ego. We also reflect on our personal journeys of awakening and how these experiences resonate with the broader teachings we discuss. Ultimately, we invite our listeners to recognize the pervasive nature of this wisdom in diverse contexts, fostering a deeper understanding of its significance in our shared human experience. Takeaways The concept of perennial wisdom highlights the interconnectedness of all spiritual teachings, revealing a central truth that transcends cultural and institutional boundaries. We explored various philosophies and scientific theories, such as Donald Hoffman's interface theory and Ian McGilchrist's split brain theory, to deepen our understanding of perennial wisdom. The journey of awakening is not solely about the teachings but rather the experiential recognition of universal truths that resonate across different traditions. The distinction between ego and true self is crucial, as it underscores the illusionary nature of the ego while pointing to an underlying, authentic self that embodies compassion and wisdom. Our cultural context often obscures the awareness of perennial wisdom, leading to a disconnection from the fundamental truths that are inherently present within us all. We are committed to exploring how the principles of perennial wisdom manifest in various realms, including psychology, theology, and the arts, as we continue our discourse. Unlocking Interpersonal Harmony: Exploring the SEW Technique

Tracking Wisdom Season 1 Episode 26 Unlocking Interpersonal Harmony: Exploring the SEW Technique Recorded - 03/17/25 In this podcast episode, we delve into the S.E.W. technique, a method for enhancing interpersonal communication and resolving conflicts, as introduced by Dr. Julia B. Colwell during the Time to Rise Summit. I present a comprehensive overview of this approach, emphasizing its reliance on inarguable truths to foster understanding and mitigate defensiveness in discussions. The S.E.W. technique involves three critical components: Sensations, Emotions, and Wants, each serving to redirect conversations from blame to personal accountability and clarity of needs. By articulating sensations and emotions without casting blame, participants can cultivate a deeper connection and mutual comprehension. We explore not only the steps involved in this technique but also its implications for personal growth and relationship dynamics, advocating for its practical application in everyday interactions. Takeaways The S.E.W. technique, developed by Dr. Julia B. Colwell, focuses on fostering interpersonal communication through inarguable truths. This method encourages individuals to express sensations, emotions, and wants in a non-judgmental manner during conflicts. By emphasizing personal responsibility, the S.E.W. technique helps to shift conversations from blame to understanding and connection. Implementing the S.E.W. technique may require practice, as identifying physical sensations can be challenging for many individuals. The technique promotes improved communication, clarity, and reduced misunderstandings in interpersonal relationships. Integrating the S.E.W. technique with active listening can enhance its effectiveness in managing conflicts.
