Moments in Time - The Old Bone Grinder

The party known as Collateral Damage is not the only party to try to take on the task of stopping the Constable and his planned destruction of the prime material planes of Granzia, Sloane, and Iwi. Across many timelines and iterations, the Journeyman has formed and tasked different parties to try to save the planes. As seen in Collateral’s timeline, variants and others have failed and joined forces with the Constable. Others haven’t switched sides but failed nonetheless. We'll look at various points, Moments in Time, as it were, during these failed adventures. While they may succeed at the points we view, know that they ultimately met their end before stopping the Constable. Today we look at the Old Bone Grinder in the demiplane of Barovia, where Thane, Vanth, Morsi, Roderick, and Mickey search for missing children in a dilapidated windmill. The Vineyard Vitalis - "Vendetta" pt 1

The Mercurial Avengers prepare for the aftermath of Mistress Vitalis’s death. Kyver hides inside the bag of holding, held by Gilead, Attros’ mechanical owl, and uses repeated jumps in and out of a Bag of Holding to confuse the Son Vitalis’s sense of his location. Meanwhile, Rig, Cereius, and Attros teleport to the Vitalis manor, where they discover the manservant nibbling on the Mistress’s corpse, revealing himself to be a lesser demon disguised as a butler. Rig impersonates Agatha to send him upstairs, allowing the group to plant explosives throughout the manor. The manor is eerily quiet, despite the butler’s claim that a grand celebration awaits outside. Father Vitalis has invited hundreds of guests for a supposed family reunion while preparing a mysterious ritual. In the gardens, Kyver spots Vitalis guards converging on the manor while Drakewood knights head toward the Vineyard. An old guard reveals himself as Malady, who warns Kyver of the Vitalis family’s plans before disappearing. At the manor, Rig, Attros, and Cereius notice guards surrounding the entrances. Father Vitalis welcomes Rig, still disguised as Agatha, and the guests, while a cloaked figure stands behind him. Rig suspects the figure is We’ahqa. As the feast begins, dozens of zombies erupt from the ground. Rig tackles the cloaked figure, confirming it is We’ahqa, but her attempt to teleport them both away sends her alone to the Vineyard’s entrance. Before disappearing, Rig calls for Attros to detonate the charges. The manor erupts into a towering pillar of fire, shaking Nymora’s roots. Attros and Cereius are caught in the panicked crowd as zombies claw and bite at them. When Attros falls beneath a swarm, Cereius rushes to his aid, invoking the Moonweaver and unleashing a brilliant column of light that destroys the surrounding undead. Facing Father Vitalis, the pair see only amusement in his expression. Meanwhile, Kyver’s next jump unexpectedly brings him to the Sabertooth family farm. The Son Vitalis emerges from the forest, and their exchange reveals that his vengeance is rooted in an obsession binding them together. With Kyver’s family now held hostage, their inevitable confrontation draws near. The Son Vitalis departs for the Vineyard, the same place where Kyver once fought as his slave, leaving Kyver to face the coming battle. At the Vineyard’s secret entrance, Rig waits beside the hidden stump as distant footsteps and rustling approach... The Vineyard Vitalis - "The Jig is Up" pt 2

Our friends made their way to the Vitalis manor as Rig teleported them there with the aid of the talismans from Agatha. Cereius came face to face with Utholok sitting in the tea garden, as he was also met by the undead visage of his beloved Valencia. This strange figure of Utholok tried to convince him to embrace the power of death, skeletons appearing from the ground, vines creeping ever closer. On guard, Cereius drew his mace and made his declaration that this was not the future that he wanted. However, as their conversation continued, he began to catch on that this wasn’t perhaps Utholok, but another manifestation of the ring, much like the lich Cereius he spoke to before. As he snapped out of the vision, he came to rejoin Rig and Kyver, preparing for their attack on the mistress Vitalis, Leinas. As they reviewed their plan one last time, they saw that she was very much preoccupied with feeding her plants. And just as things fell into place, they were able to inch ever closer in their stealth and make the decisive strike that was needed. Kyver darted towards Leinas and made his assassination strike with his rapier as Cereius began chanting his mantra, using his channel divinity to weaken the demon so that Kyver’s blade would become ever stronger. As the mistress began to falter, she struggled to cast Dominate Person on Cereius, who resisted her last attempt. Kyver only drove his weapon further into her chest as her human visage melted away and her lifeless demon form fell to the ground. After making quick work of her, Rig snatched the pendant that belonged to Agatha’s mother, and the group huddled up together as Cereius used Word of Recall to bring them back to the last sanctuary he had set. As they were on edge, they moved stealthily to avoid being seen by others in the city. With that, they made their way back to the Lion’s Den, where they noticed a small scuffle. As that was soon resolved, the group nervously retreated to their room to discuss the next step. Cereius used sending to send a message to Alma, notifying her of their completed task. As they took time to rest before Alma’s arrival, Rig attempted to delve further into the ring of Mind Shielding she wore. Her mind linked successfully, and she was taken to a faraway land: a battlefield with many fallen knights, corpses of aberrations, spectators, and even beholders. The knights all carried markings of a sigil of the Watchers, paladins who guard against otherworldly enemies. Standing alone before the corpse of a beholder was the silver-haired woman that Rig had seen before. Sorrow wore heavily on her, this warrior of noble lineage who carried a tattered flag with their sigil. But given everything Rig saw, this was a cataclysm that was long forgotten and not one she had heard about before. As far as she could tell, this was just another part of forgotten history that the Constable made sure was forgotten. As the vision came to an end, a name resounded in Rig’s mind: Beola. Attros had come upstairs in the meantime, notifying them that Minnow said there was a guest waiting for them in the lobby. Rig had gone down on her own and made a secret exchange, passing off the pendant to Alma, whereas she received a letter addressed to Kyver. He read the letter aloud, a note from Alma that seemed to express her regrets and the reasons for her actions. Enclosed in the letter was a skeleton key that held the secrets to his past, the torture room where he spent some of the worst moments of his life. In spite of his pondering and the possibility of revisiting it, Rig dissuaded him from it. As Attros finished up the makeshift breathing bubble, he handed it off to Kyver and made final preparations to join them in the final stand. With the final stand against the Vitalis creeping ever closer, Kyver and Cereius took time to bond a bit over some last drinks. The Vineyard Vitalis - "The Jig is Up" pt 1

Continuing from the last time, Rig proposed a plan to negotiate with Agatha Vitalis for her to turn a blind eye to their ambitions of taking down the rest of her family. Agatha agreed, for a price. In addition to giving the group some arcane markers that would scramble the magic ward placed around the manor, she would also not interfere in their affairs, as long as they took down Leinas, the mistress Vitalis. This she-demon wears her late mother’s prized pendant and returned it to Agatha. With this as their best choice, they decided to parlay and move forward to get rid of Leinas. When the time was right, and Leinas would tend to her vineyard, the Mercurial Avengers would set out to take care of her. Meanwhile, Kyver returned to the Lion’s Den Inn and spoke for a bit with Attros, who gave him ideas about using his own location to their own advantage if young Abraxis were to be able to track him. They would do so by jumping into another pocket dimension inside the bag of holding to obscure his location before reappearing in Nymora. Using a scattered method like that with fast travel would certainly make it harder to determine where the group was actually planning to strike, and it could push Abraxis to mobilize to a decoy location. And of course, as time drew closer to catching back up to the present, the group brainstormed various ideas on how to ambush Leinas, and what to do to close off any further distractions or reinforcements. Attros stored the web spell in one of Kyver’s daggers and cast Invisibility on both Cereius and Kyver just prior to them leaving, to give them a short window of time for this plan. As Rig used her bracers to teleport them to the tunnel space near the Vitalis underground garden, a strange ripple of magic reverberated through Cereius. Cereius ended up in the tea garden outside the manor, where he stood at the back of his old mentor-turned-foe, Utholok. Rig was not present where Cereius, cloaked in invisibility, stood. Field Reports 3: Traces

The Mercurial Avengers arrive in Grimdale, where they investigate a spreading blight traced to the Abyss and poisoned roots feeding into the river. A guard named Rubin points them toward Nymora’s darker dealings, while Rig discovers merchant records connecting the corruption to the city’s black-market Vineyard. During their travels, they encounter Pancho Vagabond, an old associate of Kyver’s who reveals information about the Vitalis family. That night, We’ahqa begins hearing the ominous voice, “One of four must die,” and later disappears. When Pancho heads toward a nearby caravan, a mysterious beast snatches him away, prompting the party to search for We’ahqa. After fighting blighted creatures in a bog, they reunite with him, though his behavior has become increasingly disturbing. When panthers attack their camp, Rig teleports the group to the outskirts of Nymora, where they witness Abraxis Vitalis entering the city. Disguised as nobles and bodyguards, the party enters Nymora and witnesses another attack by mutated beasts, aided by a young warrior named Arnable. At the Cat’s Cradle Inn, We’ahqa gives in to the voice urging him to kill and attacks Pancho, who escapes after critically wounding him. Arnable finds and cares for We’ahqa, while the rest of the party later reunites with Pancho and learns that We’ahqa tried to kill him. During the ensuing chase, Kyver pulls We’ahqa away while Rig and Cereius calm him down. Meanwhile, Kyver reconnects with his old Royal Vagabonds associate Robin Lynxley, who reveals that their friend Little Don has been captured and forced into the Vineyard’s underground fighting circuit. Kyver convinces Robin to help infiltrate the Vineyard. Cereius also uses the Puppetmaster’s Ring and Speak with Dead to uncover that a spirit attached to We’ahqa holds a grudge against four people responsible for its death, with Pancho somehow connected. The group agrees to rescue Little Don while investigating the Blight Fiend, but strange occurrences, including a mysterious green Tabaxi who seems not to exist and Rig’s strange sense of déjà vu, leave them with even more questions. With plans finalized and Robin preparing to meet them at the Vineyard, the party begins preparing for their next dangerous mission. The Vineyard Vitalis - "Diplomacy"

On the way back to the Lion’s Den, Rig, Kyver, and Cereius discussed other possible avenues of approach for taking down the Vitalis family. Rig proposed the idea of working with Agatha and getting her to look the other way so that they could get past the wards on the manor and set up the explosives as part of their operation. Piecing together the clues, they were able to determine that Abraxis was more than likely a revenant, and that he was able to sense Kyver all along, ever since he was brought back from the dead by his father through a dark ritual of sorts. The vendetta that is now keeping him alive was not affected by the amulet against proof and detection. This much was made sure when Abraxis sent him an old yarn ball that Abraxis would keep in Kyver’s cell with him during his time of slavery. The group decided to gather their thoughts and rest for a bit, but Rig sensed a strange presence in the room, as if she was being watched. As she investigated further, Rig took notice of a silver-haired noble woman’s reflection in the window, and a power that emanated from the ring of mind shielding she wore. As she tried to delve deeper into it, it triggered a strange event where she linked senses with Kyver and Cereius and was able to see through their eyes for a mere moment. Sizing up the opponents that they would have in the near future, the party came across a procession through the city with the mother of the Vitalis, Agatha, and her brother, Abraxis, followed by their guards as the people cheered them on. As they confirmed that Abraxis knew of Kyver’s whereabouts, the group decided to split as Kyver headed back to the Lion’s Den, whereas Cereius and Rig headed to the Cat’s Cradle to meet with Agatha and Alma for further discussion. As Kyver was leaving Sammi’s Salami, the nearby meat shop with a bucket of entrails for Audrey-3, his flesh-eating plant companion, he spotted Abraxis Montgomery IV at a nearby cafe with his guards. Kyver got the hint and sat across from him, sharing a heated conversation with his previous master that stirred up many dark emotions. But with a promise to kill him, Kyver walked away as the son, Vitalis, let him go. And now, we cut back to Cereius and Rig, who have been sitting in the lobby of the Cat’s Cradle Inn, where they’ve noticed people have stopped coming and going out of the lobby for the short duration of time that they’ve been there. As a hooded figure sits down at the table, she looks to Rig, asking why they’ve decided to seek out both her and Agatha at this time. The Vineyard Vitalis - "Revenant"

With the trio finally moving in through the tunnels to get below the Vitalis manor, they creep ever closer to the heart of where dark magic and the smell of death has embedded itself. Eerie plants that make themselves home to the root of a vineyard cover walls and weave together piles of bodies that had been discarded beneath the manor through metal chutes. These bodies had been subjected to various forms of torment, as it were. While they snuck quietly through the passageway, through slots, they were able to tell that a conversation was being held in secrecy on the other side in the basement dwelling of the Vitalis manor. The lord of the Vitalis, as well as his esteemed guests, were having a discussion about their plans, and even Father Utholok was in attendance. To add more to the surprise, Cereius met with a visage of his future Lich self. In that exchange, that future self tried to convince him that life was a curse, and to embrace the power of the dead, to embrace death, and his true calling. But Cereius shook it off, coming to his senses in the tunnel with the other two trying to snap him back to reality. The group continued to press forward, referring to the map from Joe Bronco, realizing that this was the marked area for clean-up with all of the bodies strewn about. As they found themselves upon a metal door into the basement, an attendant of the Vitalis family spoke with them and directed them towards the back area where he mentioned cleaning up. During that time, they sized up the structure and the various entrances and exits in this old human architecture in Nymora. They would later use this knowledge to their advantage in the placement of the explosives. As they were given some gruesome details about this being the garden that belongs to the mistress, they were directed to help trim and clean up some of the bodies and place them in a storage house of some sort beyond the threshold of the cavern. This area was a massive opening in the cavern that had been thoroughly excavated and was more like a large forest beneath the earth, swarming with hundreds of zombies. Even among them were zombies in overalls of the Joe Bronco’s agency, cleaners who had come before them. Rather unnerving as it was, the group decided not to take action for now and decided to head back without saying a word to the attendant. Unfortunately, as they tried to head back quietly, they accidentally drew the attention of one of the corpse flowers and engaged in a quick scuffle. Making a break for it, they turned to the sounds of a zombie being regurgitated from the flower and gave chase to them. Cereius used Entangle to buy them time as they escaped and made their way safely back to the Lion’s Den Inn. Field Reports 2: Blightfiend

Mr. Bell chronicles the formation of the Mercurial Avengers. Attros and We’ahqa were displaced into strange regions of the Astral Sea, the Lattice of Echoes and Shattered Girdle, while Rig’s actions ultimately reunited them with Kyver and Cereius. Believing their independent goals could create the ripple effect needed to stabilize the timeline, Mr Bell recruits Rig by offering information on We’ahqa, her future connection to Shanks, and the possibility of escaping the Constable’s control. Rig agrees to help the four complete their unfinished goals in exchange for the chance to find a new family and community. The group reunites despite lingering distrust and agrees to pursue their objectives together, beginning with Cereius’s need for a piece of the Heartwood to save Valencia. Their first mission takes them to the Heartwood on Sloane, where they meet Amina, an Unillum, and the Arbiter, who asks them to find the bard Aldis “Sleight Hand”, who could help defend the region from destabilizing forces. Using a mysterious tome, the group opens a portal to an idyllic village whose inhabitants are secretly constructs. Following clues to a nearby manor, Rig and Kyver infiltrate while Attros, Cereius, and We’ahqa create a distraction. Inside, they encounter Aldis and a Beholder, only to discover through We’ahqa’s mind-reading that Aldis is actually an illusion. A battle follows, and the party defeats the Beholder before discovering a magical doorway hidden within a painting. The real Aldis is eventually found, and clues within the tome reveal a crystalline dagger capable of curing his affliction. Rig uses it to restore him, and the party returns Aldis to Amina. In exchange, she gives Cereius a piece of the Root of the Heartwood, binding it to his rings, and points them toward Nymora as their next destination. The Vineyard Vitalis - "Clean Up"

After our friends completed their business transaction with Lucy, the local spore druid in Nymora, they went along to the Murky Armadillo bakery for a wonderfully adorable breakfast with coffee and all the cute baked goods and red panda host, Sen. Rig just about died of happiness from the cuteness overload as she continued to stuff her face. Afterwards, they discussed more about the dream that Cereius had while raising Attros from the dead. The power of the Puppet Master’s ring that pulled at Cereius may or may not have had an influence, but the presence of the Dream Eater certainly made the group wary. They also discussed the feasibility of finding this dream realm and getting there to save Valencia. When Kyver and the others made it back to the Lion’s Den, the flesh-eating plant named Audrey-3 made itself known as it bashed around in Kyver’s bag, letting him know it was quite hungry. So Kyver headed out to find a butcher shop to get entrails to feed Audrey, and ended up getting a bucket of mystery meat and a large stick of their delicious signature salami. That aside, they also continued their discussion about the Dream Realm, but with Attros, who told them about Damare and the legendary dream demons that made their appearance in the battle on Granzia ten years prior. However, without more information, any chance of teleporting to a new place with a possibility of going into limbo was too risky. Rig did begin to think about the logistics of bringing in all the explosives and setting them around the underground of the Vitalis manor before blowing it sky high. But to make the best use of it, they needed to confirm what they had seen on the map, and that they could block off any exit routes, as well as make sure that the Vitalis family was not aware of their current plans. So to do that, the party donned their dirty overalls and headed to the underground passageway to start their cleaning job and inspection. The Vineyard Vitalis - "Pastries and Planning"

After the incident following Malady’s appearance, our friends found themselves trying to regain their composure and figure out his motives. As far as Rig could tell, this was merely one of his standard antics, popping in to shake things up and rattle everyone for his own amusement. Cereius, as he continued to cast the Raise Dead spell, saw visions, not only of Attros walking in on Malady having a meeting with Agatha and Alma, but ventured into a dream-like world that existed far out of the ordinary material plane. While there, he saw scriptures and remains of an old civilization, warriors with bluish skin and demon-like horns that moved like shadows. As he ventured further in, he could hear the voice of his beloved Valencia, and her warmth wrapped around him as he got closer. However, the moment was short-lived as a great cloud of darkness called a Dream Eater came from behind and ensnared her in chains as she pushed him away, and he woke up to Rig standing beside him. Exhausted, the group deliberated on their next plan of attack now that it seemed that the element of surprise may be lost. Rig also realized that Malady had snatched away the concentrated elixir of Blight Fiend from her. They could only speculate what his use for it was. So for now, they rested until they woke and headed into town to get the wolf totem from Melons, down at the Devil’s in the Details. Afterwards, the group decided to head to get breakfast at the Murky Armadillo, run by a Red Panda named Sen. But before that, Minnow was able to inform Kyver of a specialist named Lucy, a crazy spore druid who is a mushroom farmer out in the Hydra's Ward of Nymora with her skeletal pet rat, Fester. After a strange interaction, Kyver somehow purchased a young mantaker mushroom plant from Lucy along with a few antitoxin mushrooms. So now, as they continue their journey this morning for a fulfilling breakfast, they are accompanied by a telepathic, flesh-eating mushroom jellyfish named Audrey 3. The Vineyard Vitalis - "Certain Uncertainty"

After meeting with Arnable at the Vineyard, the party returns to the Lion's Den Inn to finalize plans for infiltrating the Vitalis Manor. In their room, they discover Attros has been busy gathering supplies. Hidden beneath the beds are explosives, maps detailing where to place them beneath the manor, samples of the Blight in various stages, and what appears to be a potential antitoxin. Later that night, Attros seemingly returns carrying another large bag, explaining he hid everything under the beds after spotting a suspicious figure leaving their room. While Kyver and Cereius step out to investigate, Rig helps unload the bag, only to discover a hand identical to Attros'. She realizes too late that the man she's been speaking to is Malady, disguised as Attros. Malady reveals his plan with Elrin, also known as Arioch, to create a new realm of chaos beyond time and space. When Rig rejects his offer to join him, Malady threatens the room full of explosives with a green-flamed sword. Kyver and Cereius return just as Malady calmly heads for the door, revealing himself to Cereius as Kaela, the elven wizard who betrayed his former adventuring party years ago. Chaos erupts as the Verdan flees down the stairs. Malady hurls a bead from a Necklace of Fireballs toward the room, but Cereius dispels it before it detonates. Downstairs, Rig and Kyver engage Malady in a brief but fierce battle, landing solid blows before narrowly surviving his empowered green-flame strike through Rig's time magic and Kyver's shield spell. Wounded, Malady escapes into the night. Back upstairs, Cereius discovers Attros' lifeless body hidden in the bag and immediately casts Raise Dead. As he does, the Puppetmaster's Ring urges him to let it consume Attros' soul, but he refuses and completes the spell. In the process, Attros' final memories flood Cereius' mind, revealing Malady meeting with two figures in the moonlight: Agatha and the drow warrior Alma, confirming they are working together in some capacity. The Mercurial Avengers continue on their way after meeting up with their new ally, Arnable. As they head towards the Vineyard, they travel down the secret passage and, for the first time, take notice of faded markings and scriptures of something on the walls. Cereius, using his knowledge from the books that he has read in Utholok’s old study, sees a tale woven by the tabaxi ancestors in the tunnel that seems to predate the vineyard itself. This tale showed a greater red demon with a skull mask, the Blood Lord, a being that the Nymoran goddesses fought off. The visage of plants that sprouted forth from a river of death from the feet of the throne in the scriptures resembled the blight fiend. This very plant of the Blood Lord was once brought to this plane, and bits of it remain, but the fragments of the goddess's power still remain in effect as well in large crystals scattered throughout the lands, as some of them remain asleep. Weaving together bits of the plot of Utholok and the Vitalis, they were able to determine that Orcus, lord of the undead, was somehow involved and that they were seeking to use his power to create a lich. As the group continued with Arnable, they entered the vineyard and saw the marketplace in its entirety throughout the various levels. To no surprise, Arnable was shocked and appalled by the selling of people, illegal and stolen items, body parts, and various other things in the black market. As they came to the lower levels where the auction house was, they witnessed the selling of a young white tiger tabaxi that the son of the Vitalis family would later purchase. Shortly after, they went to the fighting arena where they made it just a few hours before their past selves could get there, and saw in person the Master of Cruelties, the mistress of the Vitalis, and a huge proprietor of the Vineyard itself. Her demonic-like appearance was none in the least surprising, as her striking beauty and charm captured the hearts of the audience and worked them up into a fervor for bloodlust in the arena. Eventually, the group decided to leave, taking Arnable back with them to the topside and planning to reconvene at another time. Lastly, before they parted with Arnable, he recounted a tale of how Malar, a powerful tabaxi entity, feuded with his sister Aphy, one of the Cat goddesses, as he was driven mad by the blight fiend. The effects of the blight fiend have been deeply rooted in the history of Nymora, as it would seem, even after the battle against Orcus. As Cereius spoke with Arnable, they were able to come to an understanding. Even as Arnable is finding out the horrible truth about his father figure, Utholok, he can’t bring himself to kill him. And maybe there was a chance that Cereius would hear out whatever he had to say, one last time.
